Having recently started playing D20 modern, I've started designing my first GM campaign, and I need some help creating a villian. I know he's going to be an evil necromancer who creates a race of demonic mosquitoes called the Kranheim(a quite nasty homemade race; I'll describe it if neccessary), and I know he'll employ a mixture of eccentric Monster Characters(in other words, non cliche monsters) and local gangs, the mafia, etc., and I figured out he's slowly deteriorating, both mentally and physically, from the adverse effects of magic in my world. And finally, I figured out that he's a college professor who, for some reason I can't figure out, he began to study the arcane, namely necromancy, and, due to the aforementioned adverse effects, went nuts. After becoming nuts, he began to invest everything into his power, in an attempt to become a god. I just can't figure out WHY. Any ideas?

Sounds like a professor of Religious Studies with a focus on ancient religions and a background in linguistics who found out the truth behind one of the popular spiritual movements of the day via a very, very old document... which would put him in contact with a secret society or two, give him a few underworld contacts (pardon the pun), and most likely make him the sworn enemy of those who follow said popular spiritual movement. It's enough to drive anyone over the brink.

Not that I'd know. :twitch:

Not that I'd know. :twitch: Wow... I like it. I like it a lot. Seems like he'd need some reason to be driven to hate mankind as a whole , though. Why? He had to hate much, much more than just the religion's followers to unleash the kranheim... you know what? I should probably tell you what the Kranheim are first.

The Kranheim are an incredibly powerful race of mosquitos(tiny in size- very large for an insect) that, upon biting a host, inject a powerful virus, that, if the host fails a will save of 20, slowly becomes a half-insect version of itself, consumed only with feeding on another host, causing further mutations. For example, if a kranheim bit a dog, it'd then turn into a bug-dog, which would then bite a man, causing a bugdog-man. This continues, until you have things like bugdogmancowarmadillo-wolves. So as you can see, you'd have to hate something a HELL of a lot to unleash something that bad on the world.

Maybe he doesn't hate people, he simply wants to see what happens when he unleashes the Kranheim?

:OMG! I never thought of it like that... he isn't being of evil(well, not at the start), he just sees the world and everyone in it as an experiment. That's brilliant! It even explains why he chose to experiment with the arcane: He just wanted to see if it would work... but, not realizing that humanity wasn't meant to tamper with these cosmic energies, he began to change, to decay, until the point in which his demented pointed of view began to show him as a being of such higher power that it was clear to him that he should rule. Wow... thanks virgil.

And what exactly do you think Chaotic Evil is?!! You don’t think that treating people like guinea pigs counts?!!

He sounds more like a diabolist or demonologist than a necromancer.

I just meant to say that he wasn't evil the way I was looking at it, the "I hate you all and I'm gonna kill you" evil. He's more of a Moriarty-an evil. And since I was looking at 'evil' on a different sense, he didn't seem AS evil. I guess it could be better worded, but, I just meant that he wasn't Maniacal Evil, just Badass Evil. And not to mention, that not all who might see the world as an experiment are EVIL, per say. The pilgrims saw America as a 'holy experiment in freedom by opression' but were they evil? Yeah, a lot of 'em were but... SHUT UP!

He sounds more like a diabolist or demonologist than a necromancer. Maybe.

You said that he is slowly deteriorating, right?

Well, theres all the reason you need right there. People do crazy things when they see death coming, especially if they are already crazy to begin with.

Why did he release evil bug thingies? Well, if he has to die for having powers, then why should all the other worthless people in the world live for being too stupid to discover them?

Why does he want to be a god? That one's easy -- He's slowly dying because of his powers, but he isnt willing to give them up. He doesn't want to die, either. Toss in a healthy (or not so healthy) craving for immortality, and there you go!
