I recently created a new character for a roleplaying intensive campaign. I am satisfied that I have a solid character foundation, but now I am interested in coming up with a character quirk or three that would add some depth to him.

Al'Shiek Mifay, class-wise he is a ranger, though he's more of the urban kind. In fact, he's a low-ranking military officer in a small country. As he is, he's currently somewhat of a control-freak, though I don't plan on having him become obsessed with it. His current mission involves him being in charge of the safety of an archeological expedition into a desert that he's somewhat familiar with. Al'Shiek isn't much of a talker so far, really only speaking up when it relates to his job.
The reason he was assigned the post with the archeological expedition is because he batched his last mission, resulting in the deaths of some of the soldiers under his command. It's something he's not proud of.

He's very tactically minded, often seeing most situations as potential battlefields before anything else. In contrast to his hard-edged attitude, he worships a goddess of love...either because he really believes in it, or perhaps simply out of habit.

I appologise for the...ummm...rambling narration. But if anyone here likes a challenge, I'm interested in your opinions and ideas.

Sounds fun.

The obvious quirk would be an insane need for him to go out of his way to protect people after his other failure - trying too hard, even, and putting them in more danger. Beware, though, for down this path lies 'OMG teh Angst!!11!1'.

For a fun quirk, related to his goddess, he could give relationship advice. That way, he can still be quiet most of the time, but is quick to speak about strategy or romance. Following that thread a little further, he could even buy little presents for the ladyfolk or try to start something between other characters or NPCs.

Since he's a low-ranking officer, maybe he's intensely focused on career advancement. He could go to great lengths to keep his uniform immaculate, and get a little irritated at those who don't look after themselves... or vice versa.
