| TinySilverChalice12-13-03, 05:18 PM | My next character will be a Janni from Savage Species. I wanted to play something magical, humanoid, and not overly monsterous (like a lizardfolk or a shapeshifter). She may eventually take levels in rogue. I've done some research and I wanted to make sure I didn't have any huge holes in my character logic. BTW, we play FR. I imagined she was born to a weathly jann man and one of his many wives. Her father was very honorbond and signed all his agreements that should he fail in his side of the bargan, he would forfet the life of his youngest child. Now he did eventually have to back out of a deal, which caused my character to be forced to leave her father, thinking that she would die. The man who now had claim to her was kind though, and kept her as a servant. Eventually, her janni nature began to bother the other servants. They said she was bad luck and that other janni may come and violently take her back. So when she came of age, he released her from his holding. Her motivations now are to make as much money as possible. She wants to live lavishly and have many strong, handsome, rich husbands one day. She currently as sought work in the north, but will one day return to the desert when she has proved herself finacially. Problems: My first problem is that I've no idea what the lifespan of a jann is, thus I don't know her exact age or how much time she thinks she has until her dreams are out of reach. Secondly, aside from a gloss that the look like dark featured humans, I haven't any idea what sort of physical quirks she might have. Also, would anyone have an idea what god she would worship? Thanks for the imput. Hopefully I kept to short enough. :D |
| Arilou_skiff12-13-03, 05:22 PM | Janni live very long, hundreds of years at least. I'd use an elf's lifespan, remember, theri cousins the Djinn are immortal as far as men know. I've always figured that Janni look more or less like arabs, although taller and more majestic than most humans. At least it seems that Janni can generally speaking be taken for humans unless you know what you're talking about. |
| LiXinjian12-13-03, 05:28 PM | Didn't Janni have blue skin in 2nd edition?? She would look quite exotic, and would have a high charisma I imagine.. |

| LiXinjian12-15-03, 12:49 AM | Looking back at my 2nd edition monstrous manual, I can see why I was wrong. The Janni entry is right next to a picture of a blue-skinned genie. However, reading the entry itself provides no clue. But I can also tell you that Djinni's don't have blue skin either. In fact, it's the Marid (genies that live in oceans) that have blue skin. Sure, the description doesn't say that (in fact, other than saying that Djinni's pass as humans in desertic lands [which tends to prove they have "normaly-coloured" skin], none of the entries I read [I skipped the efreet] give much descriptive information), but it's what makes the most sense. Besides, the picture of the blue gal is next to the bottom of the marid entry. But come to think of it, the efreet is pictured as a blue-skinned genie, too. Man, did we live in troubled times back then. :) |

| Mythgaard12-15-03, 08:11 AM | The historical accounts of the beauty of the women of Persia might be a good help in deciding what she looks like. An unusual physical trait or two, such as emerald green or topaz eyes, probably more almond shaped than the arabic norm, might be subtle hints to her true nature. An underplayed but feasible trait when playing a supernatural critter is personal odor. Perhaps she always smells faintly of some exotic desert bloom...you could even work this out as a CHA bonus when dealing with the Living (specifically Males?) with your DM. Some random thoughts anyway. :) |

Lemme check the 3.0... Nope. It's the same picture for both versions. The djinn has a somewhat pinkish skin, whereas the efreet's is indeed black-purple (like a really deep tan). There's no picture provided for the Janni. Waitaminit. I don't have savage species, but the art gallery's online... Well, according to the picture I found, none of them has blue skin. Bah, nevermind. What did the guy/girl who started the thread want, exactly??:whatsthis |
| TinySilverChalice12-15-03, 05:41 PM | Gal, actually, but thanks for not assuming. :D The pictures were confusing before they started tagging them. had actually been pointing to the wrong picture in a few cases in my 3.0 MM. I had to make an assumption in SS, and I guess I was right. Regarding appearance, I decided to make her dusky toned, with wide dark-lined eyes (think west asian/Indian), with one sandy red eye and one blue eye. I like the idea of the scent; now I just have to pick one. ;) She's smarter than she is charismatic for now, but with levels that will probably change. For now she's a "I-can-get-you-there...if-the-price-is-right" kind of character. Still strapped for a diety though... any ideas there? And how the heck does one go about acquiring multiple husbands when its not the social norm where you currently are? It'll be a riot when I try to convince another PC what an honor it is to be worthy to join my elite group of husbands. |
| LiXinjian12-15-03, 08:35 PM | How do you acquire multiple husbands when it's not the norm? Approach a likely canditate, propose to him. When he says yes, you bring him over at your home where he meets the other husbands. When he starts rolling eyes sideways, turn to him and say: "Oh, I'm sorry. You thought you were be the only one? But I already have three husbands, and it's great fun. Is this going to be a problem to you, honey?" Of course, all the while, be devilishly charming. Or better yet, introduce him to everyone (those who know about your multiple husbands) as your new husband, then break the news on him during the meeting. The idea is to make sure he looks like a fool for finding it to be a problem. Surrounded by people who accept or even embrace such a notion, he'll try to save face. Of course, maybe he'll wait a bit before walking out on you, but you'll get a chance to convert him before then. Deities? Akadi (aren't genies tied to the elemental planes?), or Sune (hedonism and beauty...) or perhaps even Waukeen (in Calimshan, having multiple wives - or husband in your case - is certainly a measure of wealth). Scent suggestion: Jasmine. |

I am not sure of their abilities, but they should have some sign of some magical heritage. maybe odd color eyes? (orange, white, yellow, gold, silver, black or white) it is just a thought. ---------- Iamtheholymolyman AKA Quijin |
| Arilou_skiff12-16-03, 04:40 AM | I don't remember Janni STR in 3rd. ed. but I know that in 2nd. ed. they were described as "deceptively strong" (every jann had 18/50 STR or something...) Still strapped for a diety though... any ideas there? Depending on setting, but how about the Prince of Birds, the Lord of Breezes, the Master of Storms, and Caliph of All Djinn? He's a greater power. If FR Akadi is a good idea, otherwise I'd look through the Al-Qadim campaign setting... |
