I'm looking to build a new character based on one of these two characters from Firefly and was wondering what classes you wonderful folks think might best represent them.

For Jayne I was thinking Fighter with maybe a level or two of scout and perhaps one level of swashbucker.

For Mal I imagined him being a swashbuckler with maybe a level or two of fighter.

Thoughts?

As for their feats and skills, I really wouldn't know where to start.

Note: Mods, if there is a better forum for this thread please move it to its appropriate home.

i dont think swashbuckler is the best class to describe both their abilities.

id say scout works pretty well, but my bet would go for fighter rogue for Jayne, mostly fighter though. And go for feats like unarmed fighting, the point blank shot tree and the power attack tree. That way he will be a tough brawler and fighter but also a good marksman. Rogue for the sneak attack ability that allows him to do cheap shots and the like.

For Malcom, I have no really good idea. Maybe something like chaotic good type paladin (with house rules changing the normal paladin class to be chaotic) with the leadership feat and other feats like combat expertise and dodge/mobility/spring attack. In my opinion, Malcom isnt the best warrior around, but he knows how to survive a fight really good.

those are just my humble opinions though.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll go with Jayne since I think he'd be more fun to play as I like the brawler style. Given the right amount of irreverence and challage to authority he might be just what I'm looking for.

So for Jayne, this is what I've come up with:

1 Scout
2 Rogue
3 Fighter
4 Fighter
5 Fighter

Seem about right? Gives him the ability to rush in and blast someone (skirmish) as well as having a good a sucker punch (sneak attack). God forbid he ever blindsides someone from behind :D

Made some changes. Here's what I've got him up to:

1. Rogue; Dodge, Combat Expertise
2. Scout
3. Fighter; Combate Reflexes, Karmic Strike
4. Fighter
5. Fighter; Mobility
6. Fighter; Deft Opportunist, Spring Attack

So here are the feat chains I'm currently interested in:

Combat Expertise
- Karmic Strike

Combat Reflexes
- Deft Opportunist
- Dirty Fighting

Dodge
- Mobility
-- Spring Attack (6th level; BAB4+)

Point Blank Shot
- Precise Shot

Power Attack
- Cleave
-- Great Cleave
- Improved Bull Rush
- Improved Overrun

Quick Draw
- Flick of the rist @ 17 Dex (level 4?)

Based on the above feats I think he'd be pretty well rounded. However, I'm still not sure its in the full spirit of Jayne and I suspect there should be some grappler feats and charge feats as well. Unfortunately I have no idea where to fit them it at.

Yea, In my opinion Jayne is a pretty good alround fighter, but really shines out when it comes to brawling and brute strength.

so going on in the power attack tree seems very much up his league for me, but you need the other feats and classes too to give him the allround feel.

Since this is moving into character optimization, I've created another thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=9637281#post9637281) specifically for that purpose.

Please post there with any recommendations you might have.

For Malcom, just make sure he has a huge Constitution score. That man takes a beating in just about every episode. ("I got stabbed, you know. Right here." as well as shrapnel ripping out nerve center pressure points, being shot all the time, taking sword hits in "Shindig," withstanding torture in "War Stories" without cracking, taking a bullet to the stomach in "Out of Gas" only to drag himself to the medical lab for a self-administered shot of adrenaline and then repair the engine) Mal's always the one who will get back up, bloodied and hurting, for more of a beating, if only to stall for time.
