| Dusk91404-12-06, 10:31 PM | ok. my character is a chaotic neutral tiefling rogue named Dusk. im thinking about him being a mercinary and later on becoming an assassin. but then, i dont know. my friend if probably going to be a paladin or a cleric or something, and i dont know if thats gonna go over well. i need a last name, too. his stats are as follows Dexterity- 19 Strength- 12 Constitution- 19 Intelligence-14 Wisdom-17 Charisma-15 |
| Vapthorne04-13-06, 12:23 AM | Here's my thoughts. Last name: Do you really? 'Dusk' sounds more like a alias than an actual name. Which I think is cool, if gives your rogue an aire of mystery. Being a merc: It's a common, and dare I say 'cliche'. But, for it's a good simple motivation for a beginner character. To help flesh your character, ask yourself how you became a rogue or got into the lifestyle your in. We're you ex-soldier in the nation's military or were you some slum thug we needed to snatch pursues to survive? What will you do with the money you have? Playing with a Paladin: It's not a good idea to be an evil character of any kind. Being chaotic neutral is borderline, and you need to trend lightly and learn to compromise and show restraint (ie, don't kill in plain sight, etc.) Here's my idea: But you still have a goal. You want to be somebody, a silent killer for the assassin's guild. You want respect. Being a dirt-poor bully in the slums, you always felt empty inside but (depending on how well the Paladin's act) upon travelling with this noble crusader's good example leaves an impressible sense of virtue. As you (reluctantly, at first) perform good deeds you turn around and find that sense of respect you've been looking for. Basically, what I'm saying is you're character should strive to be more organic and strive. It's gives your character a three-dimensional personality overtime, or you could be a unwaivering lonewolf demonlike-subrace CN rogue who only wants money. Chances are, this might not be want you want. However, you're post was rather vague and I only had my tangent thoughts. |

Paladins, being the scions of justice and good, do not usually get along with Rogues. Paladins, being the scions of justice and good, do not usually get along with Tiefling Rogues. It's going to take some pretty good role-playing in order to get these two to get along...Have fun! |
| Fithero04-13-06, 02:04 AM | Paladins, being the scions of justice and good, do not usually get along with Tiefling Rogues. You do realise that a tiefling rogue can actually be lawfull good... exalted even... any sort of paladin who just goes and hates tieflings cos they are part infernal is an idiot and deserves to loose his powers. If the tiefling proves themselves evil.. then yeah sure, but if they walk up to the paladin offering cookies and gets a "smite evil" to the face.. then something is totally wrong. Case by case basis is the way i play it, when i play paladins i give even orcs the chance to do things peacefully first. Later |
| Karm Hundredfists04-13-06, 03:50 AM | While I agree with your idea Fithero, your presentation could be a little better. In addition, Paladins do NOT as a rule get on well with characters that are half demon. That's not to say that its impossible, but tieflings are, generally, at least a little devious. Paladins aren't to down with chaos either. Finally is your sig a reference to Dylan Thomas? "Do not go gentle into that good night." As for the OP (original poster) What campaign setting are you playing in. What tiefling racial traits are you playing with? What kind of rogue do you want to play, kill em all, or find the traps? A little of both? If you're thinking about assasin then perhaps kill em all is more appropriate. If not, shadowdancer is an equally flavorful and less evil shadowy character. However, if you ARE planning on going with Assasin, then you better hope that your companion is a Cleric and not a Paladin, since if you kill someone for no reason (as I think you have to do to become an assasin) the Paladin will kick your ass. You also have to be evil to become an assassin, btw. Though if you kill someone for no reason your alignment will shift pretty damned quick. IF, and this is a big IF, you want to play an evil character traveling with a Lawful Good Paladin, then you'd better put full skill ranks into bluff. You're going to be doing that a lot. Good luck, |
| Fithero04-13-06, 08:51 AM | your presentation could be a little better. How so? Paladins do NOT as a rule get on well with characters that are half demon. Tieflings arnt half demon... (half demons are) tieflings have got fiendish/infernal blood a fair way back up their family line. That's not to say that its impossible, but tieflings are, generally, at least a little devious. Paladins aren't to down with chaos either. Thats like saying white people are, generally, cr@ppy dancers.... its a generalisation.. heck you could even call it racist. Finally is your sig a reference to Dylan Thomas? "Do not go gentle into that good night." Actually its a refernace to independance day.... where the president of the USA is giving that speech to all the pilots... though he fully ripped it from Dylan Thomas :P Finally, i meant to say this in my first post, but those are some damn nice stats. Not that im all about power gaming... but i find i have a better time when i have a better character (stats, story and all that jazz). Finally... there is actually an exatled version of the assassian which gives a death touch attack instead of death strike... The Slayer of Domiel, its pretty much just a lawfull good assassian. So if you want the whole "stealth kill" deal, without the trouble of having the party paladin on your back, that may be the way to go. Hope this helps. Later |

Some DMs are very straightforward, and good is good, and evil is evil. Other DM's make the colors more gray. It's best to check up on how your DM feels about all of this before finalizing your character. |
| Karm Hundredfists04-13-06, 02:57 PM | Good call on the tieflings not being half demon, that was typing haste. I just meant that partially fiendish heritage tends to make for at least partially fiendish characters. And racism is completely negated in a setting in which different races have different inherent qualities (Fiends are evil, as a race). Culture also comes into play quite a bit. After all, Drizzt do'Urden should be the exception not the rule. While it's fun to play an exception to a stereotype, I think that in a campaign where tieflings have no alignment tendancies, would essentially be homebrew, since in the rulebooks its says that "MOST tieflings are evil, even though a few have overcome their fiendish bloodlines to be able to make choices about good and evil." So, since most tieflings are evil it would follow that all paladins (inherently) do not get along with most tieflings. Regardless, a CN character cannot become an assasin. As for the presentation, it just seemed a little inflammatory, no offense intended. YES! Those are some nice stats. I would be inclined to play a rogue/fighter with stats like that. Dexterity- 19 Strength- 12 Constitution- 19 Intelligence-14 Wisdom-17 Charisma-15 For me would become Str - 19 Dex - 14 Con - 17 Int - 15 Wis - 12 Cha - 19 Especially if I was partied with a cleric. That gives you practically a gestalt set-up Cleric = tank/healer Rogue = damage/arcane/skillmonkey not to turn this into a powergaming thread, just saying that you would have all of your bases covered. CN is a tough alignment to play, I would say that you should be within one step of your companions for good RP in a party (by good RP I mean that, the characters will not degenerate into pointless bickering). Of course that is an over-generalization as well. If the two characters were forced to work together by some means, then they would have to overcome their differences, which leads to more developed characters. Otherwise, I can't think of a reason why the two wouldn't feel constrained by the partnership and just go their separate ways. I would either go True Neutral, or Chaotic Good. True neutral would let the rogue decide when and where he needs to steal and stab. Chaotic good would allow him to steal and stab those he thinks are evil. As far as backstory, I'm guessing that you are playing in Faerun since you are a tiefling? A little more info would be helpful though. |
| Need_A_Life04-13-06, 03:27 PM | Well, first of all you should decide on your looks, it is more important for tieflings than any other race; cloven feet tends to cause some mistrust, as does horns on ones forehead. You could try playing him as a tragic character, ridiculed by everyone for his grotesque appearance, at first he ignored them, then he began to think that there might be truth in their words, that he was in fact a monster. Then he was certain that it was so, he spent what money he had on booze, trying to drown himself in drunkeness, trying to forget what he was. Eventually he ran out of money (and went through a long withdrawal process) and realized that he could not change what he was, and perhaps he did not want to. He decided to get himself a new life, taking the name Dusk to remind him of the dark time he had just been through and vowing never to let his opinions be swayed by strangers, he would not let his will falter again. Also, try to think about having "Dawn" as your name (or some other non-traditional nickname), it gives a whole different picture of your character. Dusk is so... cliché. Hope this helps! Need_A_Life |
