Just what alignment is this? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Imagine this:

I'm taking a look at a character description right now and can't quite put a name to where he is on the alignment scale. Perhaps someone could help? Here are some of his traits.

The PC is a mage and a bit of a recluse. He spends most of his time in his studies, often working through the night or staying in his study for days at a time. Nonetheless, he is a kind fellow to those who know him, faithful to his lover, and always willing to take a bit of time to speak if someone bothers to seek him out. He pays taxes, supports local government, and tithes to the local temple of Lathander. He enjoys the company of others, but views social interaction as somewhat frivolous and an impediment to his work. When told that he needs to be more outgoing, he smiles sadly and says something about how he'll do that later, that he has things he must be doing now.

Now comes the tricky part: he has some less-than-wholesome traits...he harbors an unhealthy interest in demons and summons them fairly frequently. In addition, he is extremely vengeful and harbors grudges for years at a time. If he comes across someone he considers an enemy, than it is not likely that he will put aside his wrath for the sake of peace. Also, in pursuit of pertinent knowledge that he seeks, he is willing to deal with evil races or organizations - such as the drow, or the aforementioned demons.

The main problems here are a) the borderline Machiavellian stance he takes toward his work and b) His vicious reaction to those who try to harm him. Obviously, this guy isn't perfect Lawful Good, but just how much do his negative traits set him back?

Well you're spot on with the lawful part, but I guess I really didn't need to say that. I don't think you're too far off with that Lawful Good though. Certainly not exalted, but I could still see him being good as opposed to neutral. You've only told half a story though. Why is he searching for all this knowledge? Is it the sake of having knowledge or the intent to do something for good with it? Does he tithe to Lathander's church to cover up for his fiendish dealings (i.e. trying to keep balance) or is it because he supports all the good things the church does and wants to advance those efforts? What kind of knowledge is he looking for? A cure for life's ills and tools to shave an hour off the poor peasant's work day or the best way to flay the skin from his enemies?

Concerning his holding grudges, that's more lawful than evil I would say. If he's not going out of his way to take revenge I could see him being good (especially if he gave the affronter a second chance before holding the grudge). And even if he does, so long as he's not murdering or torturing it's probably no more than neutral.

Hope that helps (don't hold a grudge if it doesn't :D )
