i am considering playing a Bard, this is realy rare for me i hate bards but this fits what i want for this character, that wants to know everything. I was considering him worshiping Vecna and eventualy takeing a prc to become a lich, once he realizes he won't live long enough to complete his goal, like it will ever be complete. the guy wanting to know everything and worshiping vecna has been a plan of mine for forever but i never seem to make the character. Just looking for some feedback on this, ie good prc's that i could meet without sacrificing tons of skill points to get requirements, should i just take the template in a ritual rather than a class, should i just be a cleric of vecna, wizard?, forget lichdom and go for loremaster then find some other way to be immortal.

Well, frist off, I don't think that bard is a bad or weak class. You just have to treat them like a Wizard and not get them up front in battle, their ability to cure is fabulous too. They fit in really well as far as a <fill in the party need> type of character. Don't expect to do a lot of damage vs. enemies, but otherwise they are great as a Jack of all Trades.

Well first of a bravo for this original concept. I wouldn't go for cleric of wizard, a Bard of Vecna seems like an awesome idea, stick to it. As mentioned, bards aren't week at all. With their large amount of skills, you can put plenty of ranks in Knowledge skills. The Bardic Knowledge ability suits your character too. Also don't forget that some Knowledge skills give you synergy:

5 ranks in Knowledge (history) gives you a +2 on bardic knowledge checks (more knowledge!)
5 ranks in Knowledge (local) gives you a +2 on Gather Information checks (even more knowledge!)
5 ranks in Knowledge (nobility and royalty) gives you a +2 on Diplomacy checks (allways handy)

Being the knowledgeable, charming and deceitful person you are, you can get high ranks in the local kingdom, perhaps attein the role of International Ambasador, which will grant you lot of influence, relations and.. knowledge.

Good luck with this character!

well first off thank you for the compliment. But the thing i need to figure out for him is how to achieve immortality.Lichdom is the first thought the character would have since his god was a mortal made lich, and while they should be possible no one ever thinks of a lich bard. Lichdom also has the added benifit of coming back to unlife when killed.

what other ways to gain immortality are there? I've considered other forms of undead also and have eleminated a good portion from consideration since they either are unintelligent or in the case of vapires and thier kin have a slight alergy to daylight. Another consideration was the Elan race from XPH but htat wipes out your mind and levels, only good if i want to play this guy in a second game.

ps i never said bards were weak i just hated them because i like to have a specialized character most of the time. bards don't do that well.

Perhaps he could TRY to become a god. You could search all Faerun in pursuit of the Metatext, in hopes of unlocking "the secrets of the multiverse" . More of a roleplaying element than a reality. Good luck.
