Hi! We're starting a new campaign next week at level 2. There are 3 people in the party, and we're starting out in the army. The campaign is supposedly going to be very investigative. I think the other PCs are going to be a dwarf bard and some kind of power gamer spell caster. I want to play a warrior-type that is knowledgeable. Here are some ideas I'm kind of working on.

1. Ranger: dungeoneering, geography, nature. Survival too, plus Listen, Search, Spot. Not a bad skill set.
2. Paladin: nobility, religion. Also Diplomacy and Sense Motive.
3. Monk: arcana and religion; Tumble, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, Diplomacy. I really like the skill set, but one of the other players really hates monks and I probably wouldn't hear the end of it.
4. Rogue: local, decipher script, gather info, bluff, sense motive, search, listen, spot, intimidate, tumble, etc etc.

If we end up lacking a primary spell chucker, I'm considering a wizard (diviner) /lore master. But that's neither here nor there.

We're starting out at 2nd level. I'll probably play human. We're allowed Core, Complete, Book of Exalted Deeds, and some Faerun stuff. I only own core, so I want to stick to that....but a Scout might be fun too.

I just got done playing a 16th level druid and a 17th level Cloistered Cleric/Radiant Servant of Pelor, so I'm looking to get away from the divine casters.

All I really know about the world is there are no dragons and no Summoning spells (maybe the planes are blocked or non-existent).

Well, I got a week to think about it, but I'd like some input.

First off, what kind of 'knowledgeable' do you seek; ie, in what field? if you want knowledge in war or strategy, a fighter or paladin does that well enough with some ranks in knowledge. The ranger or druid gets knowledge relating to the wild. Swashbuckler might be an interesting choice. A bard with the right stats and feats can be a warrior knowledgeable in 'most anything.
Also, how fast do you expect to progress in levels? You might want to consider some Ftr/Wiz gish, which potentially gives you a smart, powerful character who knows a lot and can investigate fairly well esp with magical aid.

If you need knowledge I suggest a ranger-type character. If it's more about investigating and finding and figuring out things I'd suggest a rogue-type character.
