Ok, my PCs rescued a kobold and charmed him, they've now taken him to the city and he's been overwhelmed, right now there off adventuring and he's tagging along, I now need to play a Bard Kobold as a PC alongside being a DM, how do round out his character?
If your interested in how this happened i've added this in as a side plot to the campaign

First off he has int:9 wis:9 and cha:16 - he's not too clever but kinda loveable.

Also he was probably bullied as a kobold, so much so that after a battle he was left behind by the rest of the group for having a broken leg (more of a story here possibly.)

Finaly why in gods name would a kobold be a Bard? (I need help here - how do I explain that he's nifty with a lute?).

Right now he's smitten with a PC because she has healed him a couple times and argued that little Dell(nickname for him) does deserve loot.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how I roleplay him or ideas to flesh out the backstory.

First of all, he is not *that* stoopid, just a little dull... As I kobold, I'd play him like a kid, looking and touching everything he sees, and asking a lot of weird questions. However, this would change by time, as he grows used to the world...

He could be a bard, because his paretns got killed during a long, hard kobold war, and as such, did not wish to be a warrior, but a bard that walks around, honing peace and love, creating songs about great champions of peace and such....

But whats his alignment, first and foremost of all?

It doesn't always have to be an instrument.

It could be a fascination for heroic stories. Maybe as a kid he was always enthralled to hear those, now he is out to either learn of more, find the items/places mentioned in them, or to actually be part of one.

If you are set on the lute, it could be that he once found one (loot considered worthless for example) and started playing it. Eventually he realized that there's more to music than just song, and that his melodies have power over people's emotions. And what kobold can say no to power? :dragon:

Drums! they are a great tribal instrument. You could have him find an old skull and start boc boc boccing away on it with some old bones. One of the pc's might find it creepy enough to give/make/find him a drum.
I like the child like approach. for ideas take a look at Elan from order of the stick to be found here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript).
