I need a little help writing a background for a new character. He's a Lawful Neutral dragonwrought kobold (wings and copper scales). He's a cleric of Lendys, the Lawful Neutral dragon god of balance and justice (aka The Scale of Justice, The Balancer, The Weigher of Lives).

I plan on playing his as a highly religious judge-type, modeled after his diety. All I've got so far is that he was the first dragonwrought kobold of his tribe and was seen as their savior. I want him to eventually have become the leader of his tribe (or have split from his tribe with a group of followers) and I want his tribe to have been wiped out somehow many years later, with him as the only survivor.

The problem is, kobold's hate gnomes and I don't want him to. I just don't know how to get him from "I hate gnomes like the rest of my tribe" to "I believe everyone should be judged fairly" without making a kobold Drizzt wannabe. Any suggestions? Also, any ideas for how his tribe gets wiped out and who would be responsible? Thanks in advance!

Given that the Kobold haterd of Gnomes is based on their worship of Kurtlemak (or however you spell it), if your character serves another deity, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to explain that he doesn't hate gnomes.

However, being a Dragonwrought Kobold will (or should, perhaps) have a profund influence on his attitude...having a Copper Dragon heritage should make him bubbly and outgoing, maybe even to the extent of it being annoying...not something that generally fits with a "I believe everyone should be judged fairly" attitude...perhaps you could play up on the conflict that is inherent in that combination...if you wanted a Draconic heritage that fit better with the "judge fairly" attitude, perhaps you should go with a Gem Dragon or one of the Lawful Dragons as a focus (just a suggestion though)...

On how to wipe out his tribe and still maintain his position as fair judge (mostly, backgrounds that involve family/friends/tribe being wiped out also involve some aspect of revenge), I'm not too sure...perhaps just leave it as a mystery; he returns home after a journey to finnd his tribe gone, no bodies, no ruckus, just gone (Marie Celeste style)...that way there can be no "revenge factor". This option also allows for the tribe to turn up again at some point (even if it is only a handful of them), with the potential for plot hooks and/or a future "revenge factor".

I'm inclined to believe his tribe was wiped out mostly because of foolish pursuit of their hatred of gnomes. As such, he actively seeks to fight the prejudice he was raised with, having seen the damage it can do. It tore his tribe apart. (Maybe some other danger overran them while recovering from an attack on gnomes that they weren't prepared for. Or maybe there was infighting about the best way to annihilate them). Or maybe your cleric, being a presitgious dragonwrought kobold, was the very one to lead the foolish attack. The destruction of your entire tribe, rather than fueling your hatred instead served as an epiphany.
