| Vilmar09-10-03, 01:35 PM | I'm playing a moon-elf bard from Evereska [Faerunian Setting] and he has an intelligence of 14. Doesn't that entitle him to common and elvish as his base languages and then 2 others due to his modifier? This gives him access to four tongues altogether right? Also, is it possible for an elf to learn the Dwarven language? Both in terms of likelihood - he was educated in Silverymoon in the Ladies College so I could pretend he'd read up on Dwarven lore and met some Dwarves and learned Dethek and the language off them, but then I'm also wondering if an elf could master the Dwarven tongue in terms of the elven vocal range. |

You are also correct that your 14 Int entitles you to pick two bonus languages. In the Forgotten Realms, what bonus languages you may select are controlled by your home region, and any region in which you have ranks in Knowledge: Local. I believe it requires 5 ranks, but hey - I've been wrong before. If dwarven is on the list of bonus languages available to your home region, then you may select it. Including a nice piece of background (like you provided) to explain why your elf knows the Dwarven language is a good thing. Also, you might wish to note that while you speak Dwarven fluently, perhaps you speak it with a slightly odd accent. |

Don't forget, that you can always spend two skill points on Speak Language (Dwarven) so you can start with it if you want. To be honest, an elf probably has the same vocal phonetic capability as a dwarf, they just different aspects of it. |

I sort of justified in it as much as that he wanted to impress his instructor. He's a based off a on older character who was a bit of a smart-ass, but he died at level 2! I also liked the idea of an elf holding his own against a dwarf on the known history of the Dwarves and it emphasis's the character's desire to surprise and be flexible. I also had him have slight religious leanings to Erevan Ilesere to sort of further emphasis his desire to be different and such... I think he also worships Milil, since I did a quest where he had to recover an artifact for a Sorlyn. |
