I have created a BBEG for a up-coming game and I need to think up some rumours, legends and the like to go with him, and I'd like some suggestions from the friendly people here :D
The Knightmare, as I have dubbed him, is an evil blackguard that delights in all things chaotic and evil. He is a 10/10 Ftr/Blk, so he is capable of a lot.
A quick run-down of his background is as follows:

Taken into slavery by an evil lich in his early childhood when his parents died in the struggle against the lich, Desties Ironsmith knew only pain and grief. Determined to live as long as possible, he remained loyal to his undead captor, and eventually began to respect his master. Regonising this, the lich decided to play around with the emotions of the now teenage boy, in the hope of twisting the mind of the boy to make him think like his master. The lich frequently tortured the boy, and his soul became a furnace of hate. Using his magic, the lich controlled the mind of the boy while in this fragile state. He made him do terrible, evil things which he would never have dreamt of doing himself. This twisted his mind to the extreme, and he broke down. The lich abandoned the boy, leaving him only with a sword, and the evil and hate now corrupting his mind. Able to fend for himself using the skills he had learnt from his parents in childhood, Desties grew in strength and in power, until one day when he stumbled upon a mysterious cave. The cave contained an open portal, and he stepped through without fear. Finding himself in the Nine Hells, he was met by a curious devil. The devil, seeing the potential in the young man, decided to corrupt him further, rather than kill him. The devil lead him along the path of the Blackguard and gave him the gift of a devillish claw, and he became the most feared mortal throughout the continent.

Any suggestions would be great, be them rediculous or not....after all, who has never heard a downright unbelivable rumour or legend?

Hmmmmm....perhaps Forsaker might be appropriate for someone who'd been tortured so with magic?

The way I see it for this character, he saw the great potential in magic from his torture, and so embraced it when he became a blackguard.

I hate being a pain (I really do!) but that does seem some what of a contradiction. I would think that if one knew only pain and grief he would not be determined to live as long as possible. He would be willing to live, but not eager to die either.

As for stories, say his parentals didn't die. Imagine if they had another child serveral years later, and this child is one of the PCs.

Imagine the Lich had never let go of the boy, he had merely stepped into the shadows. Engineering every event in the boys life this lich now has a powerful ally. The Lich can use the boy's hatred to destroy cities (just give out a couple of rumors that the Lich was seen nesting in the city and your Blackguard now has a reason to come down apun the city!)

A rumour states that he has a weakness for young boys (like him) in trouble. He is very empathetic to them and it may even cloud his judgement.

So, the party can hinder the BBEG by holding up a street urchin and putting a knife to his throat. "Hey, look at Tiny Tim getting abused over here!"

This is a kickass concept, and I think mebbe working a dame into his life will add some more flavor.

Good ideas, women and children...perfect!
About the pain thing.... When I wrote that I was thinking along the lines of he wanted to live through the torture and have a normal life again once he escaped, but unfortunately for him it didnt work that way :( I think I chose the wrong wording...he didnt ONLY know pain and grief....he was happy before he was captured, and then only knew pain and griefanfter that, and wanted to live through his torture to get back to how life used to be.

As for:

Its a good idea, but I don't like to put more emphasis on one PC....I've had bad experiences with that. I'll look into it though, I'm sure I can work it in without bias for one player.

Love this idea! A sister or old girlfriend...or perhaps someone he met after his capture....Ideas forming! :D
