| bobothehobo808-30-05, 11:23 AM | edit: Man, the Char Development boards are dissapointing...the traffic is just so slow... I don't remember it being this bad before. Maybe I will get more traffic if I change the title a bit. Thread formerly called: Fen "Silvercloak" Dalwed, Gnome Illusionist Original post: Hello! I am building the RP aspect of an upcoming character, and would love some input! I think it is finally coming together enough to post, though it could still use some additions. Please note I used the "How to create a roleplaying character" guide for this character, as I always end up doing in one way or another. It is just such a useful tool! Intro- A Gnome Illusionist studying the origins and definition of Magic. Name- Fen "Silvercloak" Dalwed. The Silvercloak name originates from his constant wearing of his father's cloak. It is all he has of his true family. Race- Male Rock (PHB) Gnome, of average hight and above-average weight. Age- Fen is an adult by gnomish standards, though still often percieved as young in appearance and at heart. Clothing- Grey, close-fitting breeches, trimmed with blue. Matching shirt, with close-fitting sleeves. A blue vest with a high collar is worn on top of this. He almost always wears his shining, silver cloak. No jewelry or excessive adornment. Grooming- Very clean at all times, bathes whenever possible. Long, light brown hair, a few inches past shoulder-length. Usually held in a pony with leather. Small, carefully shaven beard. Medium tan skin tone. Profession- Acolyte/Apprentice to an old gnome sage (Cleric/Wizard) whom Silvercloak calls Mr. Dalwed. Outlook- Fen is facinated with truth and illusion. What distinguishes the two is only limited by perception. From a young age, Fen always looked at life with an odd point of view. Growing up with an old hermit was not the most fun childhood, and Mr. Dalwed made him learn the basics of magic at a young age. Silvercloak is not against an occasional jest and is a master of deception. Manipulating others senses is just fine, as long as it is in good humor, in his opinion. Enjoys art, literature, poetry, music. Very creative. Tactics- Uses spells mostly, often employing imaginative/creative methods. Objective is to "even the odds" when group is outpowered through precise use of spellcraft. Buffing others is not unheard of, and sometimes simply blasting stuff is the path to victory. Can also work as a troubleshooter outside of combat. Motives- Fen adventures because Mr. Dalwed was unable to teach him any more. He is still technically an apprentice to Mr. Dalwer, and treats him with respect, but there is very little more the old man has not already taught Fen. Unable to continue his training, Fen, having only recently recognized as an "adult" in gnome society, set out to see the world and study magic abroad. Fen's main goal is to become a master of the arcane, and imagines finding the truth that is the illusion of magic. Religion- A master of trickery, magic, and knowledge in general, Silvercloak worships (). Mr. Dalwer was, in fact, a priest of (). More info when available. Fen also has an instinctive connection with the earth, though does not fully understand it quite yet. Attribute ranking- Int/Con, Dex/Wis, Str/Cha. Fen has a quick intellect and is actually quite stocky, even for his race. Youth brings quickness, and Fen was always a deep thinker. He doesn't get much exercize and doesn't attempt to make many friends, though. Skills- Knowledge Arcana must be maxed, as does spellcraft. Bluff and Hide must be high. Concentration should be a no-brainer. Other knowledges should be handy. If possible, Move Silently/Disguise. Background- One morning, Garlmer Dalwed awoke to the screams of an noisy child. This was odd, seeing as how he lived alone a half-mile away from the nearest village. He investigated the matter further and was startled as he found a young child on his doorstep, screaming and wrapped in a fine silver cloak. He picked up the child with little finesse; the man had never had any children. He yelled out and searched around his house but could not find the parent. So he took the child in to his house and got the child some hot milk. He brought the child to the town the next day after no one came to his house. No one had any idea who the babe was, and so he resigned to raise him as his own until the lad could raise himself. He called the baby SIlvercloak for the first year, until he realized no one was coming to reclaim him. So he officially named the child Fen Dalwed. Years passed and Dalwed eventually noticed the "spark" of magic within little Fen. He was excited that he would be able to pass his profession on to a new generation, and began the apprentice practices with Fen not much after he learned to speak. So Fen was raised by the wand, so to speak. When it was time for Fen to move out and move on, it was bittersweet. He didn't like how hard he was pushed his whole life, but deeply respected the old gnome, in part for helping him maximize his potential. Setting out to explore the outside world, Fen vowed to revisit the old man whenever he was near. Common Phrases- "If you see it, it's not the right 'it'" "Fortune blinds you" Common Habits- Very articulate; Often corrects other's grammar...even in combat... Alignment- Chaotic Good, but not in the common sense. Fen is a trickster, and cares little for rules and regulations. He is not an anarchist by any means, he just does his own thing. Generally, he has a kind heart and is willing to help others over himself. To those who have purposefully wronged him, however, Fen is a very vengeful little gnome. For the religion part, I am waiting for the info from the DM, who is creating a new Pantheon. Ideally, I would worship a NG Gnome god of Trickery, Magic, and Knowledge. So what do you think? What needs more detail? Or you could help me by simply asking questions about the character. Thanks ahead! Ninja Edit: I forgot the link to my build. Yes, I'm also a min/maxer. Don't judge the RP aspect based on this- I just thought some people might want to see "The Whole Picture" Gnome Shadowcraft Dweomerkeeper (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=6960518&mode=threaded#post6960518) |

| BadCatMan09-02-05, 02:05 AM | Sometimes there's just nothing more to add it. It seems pretty complete, at first glance. Fen must have more of a goal in life than to become a more powerful mage, surely? How about finding his parents? And if he does just seek magical skill, is he looking for fame, knowledge or sheer power? |
| bobothehobo809-02-05, 02:25 AM | Sometimes there's just nothing more to add it. It seems pretty complete, at first glance. I'll take that as a compliment. Fen must have more of a goal in life than to become a more powerful mage, surely? How about finding his parents? An opportunity to find his true parents would definately grab Fen's attention. It is something that he would love to explore, but isn't particularly looking for. In other words...Yes- it would be a viable plot hook. And if he does just seek magical skill, is he looking for fame, knowledge or sheer power? To Fen, the concepts of Fame and Power are mere illusions, fleeting sensations that can never be proven to be more than conjecture. You can't really measure those things, they only exist within the mind of oneself. Knowledge is truth. Knowledge is real. Knowledge is tangible. The more you know, the better off you will be. This is how he sees it. As you may be able to tell, I am trying to use the idea of truth vs. illusion as kind of touchstone for this character. Everything can relate back to the central theme. So far, I feel it is working well, and really helps me imagine things from another perspective. Edit: And thanks for the icebreaker. Now, if like usual, more replies will come. |
