I am a new player. In the Players Handbook is describes the advancement in levels for a character. I have a Ogre mage sorcerer. Currently I am a level 1 ogre and a level 1 sorcerer. Does that make a level 2 character? If so then do I need the experience to obtain level 3 in character ranks to advance to a level 2 sorcerer?

There are three things that detemine how powerful your character is.

Racial Hit Dice (HD)= Most monsters have this, each hit dice is effectively worth a level.

Class levels/hit dice= Everytime you gain a level in a classs, you gain a hit dice, each hit dice from the class is worth a level. Simple enough.

Level Adjustment= Most monsters have a level adjustment, this might be because the monster has high stats, spell like abilities, or something else that makes it more powerful than the normal races.

All together they equal your ELC (Effective Character Level)

So an Orge Mage has 5 racial hit dice, and a level adjustment of 7. So a normal Orge Nage already has an ECL of 12. And you have one level in sorcerer. So 5 RHD + 7 LA + 1 CL = An ECL of 13.

Meaning you need the amount of experience that a normal character would need to reach level 14 to gain your second level in sorcerer.

So to sum up. You need 78,000 points of experience to start playing this character, and need to gain another 13,000 (total 91,000) to gain another level in sorcerer. As it stands right now, your character should be able to stand toe to toe with another 13 level character.

So unless everyone is starting out at level 13, I don't think you should be able to play this character.

Yes you would need the experience for to increase to a third level character. Level 1 Ogre + Level 1 Sorcerer = Level 2 Character

As for the other thing... It sounds as if they are playing with the racial advancement that was on the WotC main site a while back and I believe is also in one of their books. We do not use it, but I know of others groups that do.

The basics for racial advancement... each level you take as a race you get some of the special abilities of that race. So you don't start out with an ECL so high and it lets you play bigger things at lower levels.

However, Savage Species, p27, "Monster Classes And Multiclassing" states that you're not allowed to take class levels until you're through completing the monster's progression. So no sorcerer levels until you've got all 12 levels of Ogre Mage.
