I noticed the shadow creature template and was inspired. I wanted a good character but I decided to stick with the darkness theme and ended up with a shadowbane inquisitor. (An obsessive merciless paladin/rogue combo.)

Anyway, I have his personality and mannerisms etc. already determined, but I have no idea what I can do for a character history that gets him there.

Traci, as I'm calling him, has a fanatical devotion bordering on obsession. He pays homage to no deity, and will gladle site the flaws inherent in each if religion comes up in conversation. Instead Traci frequently mutters devotions and supplications to "The Light Within." He's very cold should anyone ask him about this, just rebuffing with "You have not been illuminated."

He tends towards short sentences and brevity in speech, but uses very eloquent language to best convey his points.

Traci is relentless and unforgiving in his pursuit of evil. He's very one sided in his views and concentrates solely on those in need of punishment, not examing other aspects of good, such as helping those in need.

Traci sees himself as impure and flawed, tainted by his connection to shadows and darkness. However, he is hardly stupid and will not hesitate to take advantage of his stealthy abilites to accomplish his goals.

As for his background, my only thought is that perhaps he was born inside an area with a strong connection to the plane of shadow and was thus transformed.

What campaign setting are you playing in?

I'd have had this character be the brunt of an attack from the shadow plane, thus describing why he hates the dark so much.

Later on, I'd have that, when he went to the various religious orders, he was shunned and even hunted down.

He, at first, had to live by thievery, getting what he could just to survive. His fury was later rekindled when a something happened that reminded him of the attack on his home town. It was then that he swore that he would become strong, and defend those who couldn't (viola, instent paladin).

One day, he found the shadowbanes, accidently poved himself to them, and became one himself.

The 'Battle' between light and dark is an old one but this is an interesting take on it. I like it.

Perhaps the young traci street urchin living, more like exisiting, hand to mouth often hungry, not because he was a poor rogue, he was very skilled in the art of theivery. it was his concience that stayed his hand more often than not. Some deep understanding of right and wrong guided his life. it was this life that brought him to a Paladin of Light. There was a shining example of everything Traci thought he wanted to be and so he followed the Paladin like he was the man/womans shadow. he was then taken under his/her wing and trained in the ways of a paldin of light, achieving the enlightened status. Life was good for a time until the forces of darkness came killed the paladin. Traci almost died in the battle but fled using his skills for hiding in shadows to escape. this was like a taint on the soul for Traci but he lived. As such he decided that to truly bring light to the darkness it would take all of his skills.

I hope this helps
