| asurademon05-04-06, 06:40 PM | So I'm working on creating a tiefling character, and need help fleshing her story out a bit more, and choosing a god for her (definately needs to be a lawful good god). For her race I'm going to make a tiefling variant that is a hybrid of succubus and human, probably somewhat similar to Fey'ri in terms of abilities. Lillian Lillian’s parents were the bosses of the local crime syndicate. One was a human, and the other was half-succubus. The criminal organization had a long history in the area, and had often dealt with demons in exchange for power. Part of the deal was breeding with them, leading to the creation of demon-blooded that would be used as pawns by demons to aid them in the spread of corruption on the material plane. As a result Lillian’s parents were very both wealthy, and for a long time, and organized crime flourished in the city. Even the law enforcement had become horribly corrupted, and so little was done to stop the criminal organization. When Lillian was still just a small child a new priest was named head of the church. The old priest had done little to fight the cities corruption, and was thought of by many as a coward, but this new one had come from a neighboring city, and took a very serious and dedicated stance on restoring order to the city, and weeding out corruption. He was extremely charismatic and quickly gained the public’s approval. The cities guard along with adventurers recruited from outside the city lead by the cleric dedicated themselves to identifying members of the crime syndicate. They raided Lillian’s parent’s home, and fought both of her parents to the death. Lillian was found, and the child was taken to the church. There the priesthood debated on what to do with the child. At first the general consensus was that killing her was the best thing, after all she was tainted by demonic blood, a thing that should not be, a thing that would almost certainly become evil, and bring the world more suffering. But one Paladin stepped up and said that the creature should be given a chance, and that if she were raised within the church perhaps she would not fall victim to her demonic heritage, and that killing an innocent, mostly human child would be murder, and thus horribly immoral, even if the child did have tainted blood. The rest of the congregation seeing the truth in his words decided that she should be raised in the church. Upon adulthood she became a paladin. She is painfully aware of her demonic nature, and of the evil things her parents did, and finds her heritage deeply troubling. Lillian is a very dedicated paladin, and a troubled person that must always fight the evil within, as well as without. Realizing that she would never be accepted by the community, and that she could end up giving the order a bad name if they knew the truth, she hides her demonic side from everyone outside of the church. However part of her wishes that she could just be accepted for what she is, and tires of the struggle to seem like a normal human being. Appearance and personality: Lillian has flawless skin, with features that look like they were drawn with great care by an artist. Her skin is pale, her eyes crystal blue, her hair is dark brown, long and silky. She is five feet, five inches tall, and has an athletic but feminine build. The one sign of her demonic heritage are her massive leathery wings. Lillian is passionately dedicated to her god, and protecting order, and fighting evil. Lillian sees violence as only a last resort, and only to be something used as self-defense, or defense of the innocent. |
| Pyritefoolsgold05-04-06, 08:22 PM | How in the hell does she go about hiding her wings? Those would give most people away as something unusal right away. |
| asurademon05-04-06, 08:39 PM | I intend to create a race similar ability wise to the fey'ri, whom have an alter self ability (humanoid only). Of course I'm sure that there are some whom could see beyond the use of alter self (I think those with true seeing could see beyond it for example, and I think there's spells that could dispell it), but most people wouldn't be able to. |
| Pyritefoolsgold05-05-06, 02:52 AM | Lillian was raised, effectively, by five parents, who were forced to keep her in secret. One was the paladin, who was often absent on quests, but while around provided her with a great deal of moral guidance, telling her tales of the people he'd helped, and filling her heart with goodwill towards the people around her, even if she couldn't ever meet them. Three were priests, two male and one female. The female doted on her, treating her as the daughter she never had and speaking to her without fear of what she would become, an unquestioning love that lilith would later come to know the value of. The first male priest was like a stern father, always keeping her in line, always fair and always stern, never angry, only dissapointed. Later she would recognise him as the backbone of her faith and discipline. The other priest was different. He didn't trust her. He never said as much, because in his eyes what the other priests descided upon was law, but she could tell in the way he only spoke to her reprovingly, in the way he watched her, waiting for her to slip up, in the way he felt the need to reconsecrate the chapel every time she went to pray. It was very hard to keep from hating him, and so he provided the first challenge to her devotion to her cause. Her last parent was a housekeeper, from a far off land, who stumbled upon her by accident, and was frightened at first. She quickly took a liking to the girl, managing to look past the leathery wings. She filled Lillians mind with tales of far off lands, folk stories, old songs, and made her wish very badly to leave this place and see the world, to help people, and do what she could against the darkness that sometimes sprung up around us. One night she looked at her leathery wings, wishing to herself that they would just go away, that she wasn't a demon, that she could just be human. Before her eyes, they did. When she went to the paladin, and told him of this, and finally let spill the dreams that had been building up in her mind, he knew that there was only one solution, and he took her under his wing, training her in the ways he had been taught. That was three years ago. Now she is finally ready, and is leaving the church on her first mission. Wow, I got started on that and just kept rolling! Use whatever parts you like. |
| Morka05-05-06, 02:10 PM | Do you know Ilmater? It's the Faerunian LG God of suffering. I once designed a paladin of Ilmater. He's a normal human, but he was born with horns due to some curse. When he was young, the other children always took him as punching-bag, because he was different. That made him very angry, he always tried to defend himself, which greatly amused the other childs. Until he met a cleric of Ilmater who taught him some prayers to help him endure the wounds. The next time the children tried to abuse him, he endured, and the children stopped because it was boring. With the time, he gained the respect of these children. Now, he is a paladin, helping people by enduring what they can't endure themselves. All this to say that a paladin can look different, even look evil, and still be a great paladin. I'm not sure about a paladin who's continually hiding the truth about her true nature? In what is she different from the thief who pretend being an honest citizen? Also, she seems to have forgotten her parents very easily. A modern child living with her monoparental mother, and who doesn't know her father would eventually idealize her father, making up good stories about him. What about a child who's raised by those who killed her parents? Could she not have a little afterthought it's not her parents who were wrong? |
| asurademon05-06-06, 03:27 PM | I was definately thinking of having her follow Ilmater actually, and I think I will. I also really like the idea of her pretty being raised by several people, I will definately incorporate that into her background. As for her forgetting her parents easily, I figure she was probably only 2 or 3 years old when she lost them, old enough to have a strong emotional connection to them, but not to really remember them. Of course their deaths would still be a major source of inner conflict, but I think I will have her react by surpressing thoughts of them. This would probably cause some psychological problems, and might make for interesting role playing. They would be the thing she'd never talk about, a really nasty skeleton in the closet (metaphorical of course). Part of her story as the campaign goes on could be coming to terms to the damage her parent's death's, and their evil nature caused her, or if I want to go the other route they could be the straw that broke the camel's back and caused her to turn from her god, and walk a darker path. And yes there would be a lot of guilt surrounding her race, and also the fact she has to hide it, which goes against the lawful good code of ethics. I'm thinking a good way to get her to start adventuring would be for her to end up exposed for what she really is to the population of the city she lives in , and get ran out of town, because despite her good record people no longer see her as trust worthy (after all they've been decieved, and by something part succubus at that). |
| kelvinaw27305-07-06, 07:05 AM | Well, this character would create a flap, no mistake. Myself and another player once made up twins born of a Tiefling and an Aasimar (don't ask). Both were monks, mine got the horns and the dead white skin and was essentially good, while the other player got the angelic looks and yet tended to evil ... and a good time as had by all! |
| Pan_Ai_Khan05-09-06, 08:41 AM | Makes me think of Fallen-From-Grace, the LG succubus cleric from Torment. |
| asurademon05-09-06, 03:30 PM | yeah, if there's any similarity it isn't intentional, but I really love that game, and Fall From Grace was definately my favorite character in that game, beyond the main character (the Nameless One). I haven't played that game in the long time, and don't have a copy any more unfortunately. I plan on Lillian to be very ascetic though, where as Fall From Grace was a part of the society of sensation, which is pretty much the opposite. Anyhow here's an updated version of my character's background: Lillian’s parents were the bosses of the local crime syndicate. When Lillian was still only three years old a new priest was named head of the church. The old priest had done little to fight the city’s corruption, and was thought of by many as a coward, but this new one had come from a neighboring city, and took a very serious and dedicated stance on restoring order to the city, and weeding out corruption. But one Paladin stepped up and said that the creature should be given a chance, and that if she were raised within the church perhaps she would not fall victim to her demonic heritage, and that killing an innocent, mostly human child would be murder, and thus horribly immoral even if the child did have tainted blood. The rest of the congregation seeing the truth to his words decided that she should be raised in the church. Lillian was raised by the church, and upon adulthood she became a paladin. Because of this she did not have a traditional family. She had a nanny, named Heather whom was able to look beyond her appearance from the beginning. The nanny had lived in another city, much more open about non-humans before she joined the church. She was a very attentive and gentle person. One of her quirks was that she was something of a neat freak, and often scolded the child for not cooperating in keeping things organized. Heather was Lillian’s primary care taker. A cleric named Damien also took a role in raising her. He taught her all about religion, and also about being a good person. He wanted Lillian to become a cleric, and to live her life peacefully within the church serving the god. Another individual was named Roderick, he was a Paladin, whom was an adventurer (a fighter to be specific) before he came to the church. He would tell Lillian tales of fighting monsters and treasure, tales of far away lands and people that intrigued the child. It was thanks to Roderick that Lillian became a Paladin, and it was him that trained her. The head cleric of the church, named Samson was a very stern and distant man, he was often absent, dealing with church relations. Lillian never really got to know him well. A third cleric was Patrick. Patrick never trusted Lillian, he was the one cleric whom could never quite see beyond Lillian’s race. Though it was clear he at times tried to be kind to her, he never let his guard down, and seemed to always be watching out for when the tiefling might finally show its true colors. Lillian usually avoided Patrick. Since Lillian was only three when her parents died, she was old enough to have formed an emotional connection with them, but not old enough to really remember them. Her parent’s are her metaphorical skeletons in her closet, really nasty ones. Lillian has reacted by suppressing her feelings for them, and she never talks about her parents. Lillian feels great guilt over her having to deceive people about her race, after all being deceptive goes against lawful good ethics, and the Paladin can’t help but feel hypocritical. If her nature was found out the results would be disastrous. The city she lives in has very few non-humans, and a history of not so good relations with them. Non-humans if they are even tolerated occupy the bottom rungs of society in the city, usually they end up thieves, or very poor farm workers. The recent purging of a tiefling dominated criminal order assures that no tiefling will be tolerated in the city. To the humans of the city Lillian is seen as a trusted protector. The majority of the city are worshipers of her church’s god. |
| Kazzaroth Pan'theon05-10-06, 09:32 AM | Well, you can replace Darkness whit Alter Self (limited only to medium sized humanoids) but it would not cover more than few minutes. I would advice simply say that your char wraps her wings tightly around herself and covers them whit a cloak (-5 to disguise likely but heck, it at least gives reason to get high disguise). I also used in one char a Assimar/Thiefling twin idea (and still fidn it fascinating concept), they both were very close to each other but BOTH were evil (both were Mulhorandi nobility in exile). Anycase I advice that you descripe your mother as Alu-Fiend, it is half-succubus template and all Alu-Fiends are female and they have 50% chance to have wings or not plus some other fiendish trait. But I find this thiefling paladin fascinating concept :). |
| Morka05-10-06, 01:54 PM | I was definately thinking of having her follow Ilmater actually, and I think I will. I also really like the idea of her pretty being raised by several people, I will definately incorporate that into her background. I was affraid you just wanted to play a "dark hero" without actually bothering about the background, but it's really deep. ;) The part where you describe all the people who "raised" her reminds me the game Baldur's Gate. The main character was raised by a wizard named Gorion, but everyone in Candle Keep was teaching him something. About the wings, she could have only some vestigial wings, that she can fold under her clothes, like Kazzaroth Pan'theon suggested. |
| asurademon05-10-06, 07:11 PM | well, I am going to have her be a +2 LA race. I posted the stats for her race under the races section here, but there wasn't any interest in it. It's pretty much based on the Fey'ri race as far as abilities go (also +2 LA), and they can fly (though not that well), and they can alter self with no time limit (humanoid only). I need to find the book that has more specifics than that on how Fey'ri abilities work though, I can't remember if they only have one humanoid form they can take or what, and how many times a day they can change forms I don't know. One of differences would be that I want to change the ability bonuses that Lillian's race gets to be more appropriate for something part succubus than the Fey'ri's (or standard tiefling's) abilities were (probably a +2 to charisma and intelligence). |
