I'm introducing a 16 year old PC to my party, she's a Monk/Fighter/Dervish. The key is she was raised and trained by her mercenary father, and thus hasn't encountered the outside world much except for a small village. How do I play up this naivety?

Poor wisdom score, no ranks in sense motive. She might be too easily trusting and gullible. She falls easily to scams and believes lies more readily.

The opposite might be true, too: she may be aware of her inexperience and overcompensate by being paranoid and mistrustful of the outside world - especially "city folk", people from other nations, very different cultures, etc. She may have been misinformed or simply made some bad assumptions on her own about other races and cultures, which could lead to some unpleasant faux-pas.

If you go this route, maybe decide on a few misconceptions ahead of time - not too many, unless she's severely lacking in some stats. Low wisdom might result in more outlandish stereotypes ("if a half-orc eats bacon, isn't that, like.. you know.. cannibalism?"). A low charisma score might mean that she doesn't just think these things, she probably says them outloud too. A low intelligence might mean difficulty in adjusting to the truth even after she's encountered it.

On the contrary, if she has high scores in some of these areas, she may be less naiive. She may doubt what she's been taught if she has a high enough wisdom to piece together some of the truth herself, she might manage to pull off a sense of worldliness if she has a high charisma, and a high int could help her quickly correct her misconceptions.

Someone who grew up in a small town might also be unprepared for a lot of the harsher realities of the world at large: perhaps she's never seen someone die before, or seen a victim of disease or famine, for example.

Particularly since she is young, she may have a poor understanding of wealth, commerce, and the value of items. People living in small and/or rural areas may only be accustomed to bartering systems and may not know how much they can and can't get for a gold piece.

The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is that she might have a strong opinion of nobility and the upper class, one way or another. She may despise the wealthy for living lives of luxury while others toil and suffer, or maybe instead she envies them the way real-world teenagers worship their teen idols (ick).

Anyway, just some ideas. ^_^ Always remember: less is more! Don't over do it.

Generally speaking I find the best way to play out the kind of naive nature you refer to is with expectations. Having grown up around people who all acted in a specific manner (local traditions) she would be thrown for a loop by people who didn't do things she considers normal or who do things she doesn't.

Maybe in her home village foot races were considered a great competition. Finding out that outside the village noone cares as a result of the popularity of horse racing is a major shock to her. When she encounters her first leather bound book she considers it a major treasure because all she has ever known were wood and string bound. She has never seen women (except the mayors wife) wear jewelry. Whenever she sees a woman in a dress she assumes the woman is off to some important event and wants to know what's going on.
