| Kurashu05-22-07, 12:37 PM | I'm developing the character for my Hexblade for the Waterdeep campaign that's starting up Wednesday. We're going to be doing nautical/urban stuff, swashbuckling, social situations, and a narrative (the DM wants us to have a backstory and reveal in character). We aren't pirates, we are privateers/mercenaries/people who do the dirty work. Buuut... we're pirate-esque, so might as well have fun with it. I've decided that he's a follow of Loviatar, but not by choice. A SO convinced him to join the following (read: beat him into submission). He went with that until his SO was killed/deserted him. I haven't decided which yet. Since, he hasn't been extremely devout, but he hasn't worshiped anyother deities. He doesn't question the power or authority of the gods, he just doesn't care really in a non-defiant way (apathy I suppose). He's unlucky in a lucky sort of way, a bad luck charm to those that would cross him. He's both brutal and charming (Intimidate, Diplomacy maxed out. A fierce combant, but charismatic in social situations). But not a soft hearted bad boy. A noble gutterrat quick to enforce his own brand of justice but capable of manipulating the local law to his whims (sort of like batman). He's a wanderer with nowhere to wander and always ends up back in Waterdeep again. He's very fatalistic, but believes we are free to get to our fate by our own ways (the destination is planned, but the road is unpaved). There is no death before dishonor, only death after dishonor. If he wasn't so bent of honor and loyalty, I'd say he'd be a good candidate for CN. Any suggetions for code of conduct and/or mannerisms would be great apperciated. I'd like to NOT model him after Jack Sparrow or any of the other PotC characters especially because of the movie that's coming out soon. |

To be perfectly honest, I didn't read anything past I'm developing the character for my Hexblade for the Waterdeep campaign that's starting up Wednesday. But what is it with people and D+D and Wednesdays, is that like the holy day or something? What is with you people? I've never played on a Wednesday (except maybe online games)!!! You can ignore this post, I've just been wondering... |

Anyway, you might want to base your code of conduct on the criminal codes of actual lawfully aligned organizations, such as omerta. Never ratting out another pirate, even one that isn't on your crew, seems like a natural prime directive. You may want to add fun stuff like swearing to take unusually good care of captives, to the point of treating them like guests. Maybe he always choses to do battle on equal footing when faced with a foe he particularly admires - dismounting to fight an opponent on foot, letting a disarmed opponent retrieve his weapon, etc. A friend of mine played a very curious rogue that was always the first to loot the dead after a fight, but never took a victim's last weapon as a matter of honor. More as a character point, he may lack respect for those who don't have a distinct moral code of their own. Even if someone's moral code dramaticly clashes with his own, its following it consistently that he ultimately respects as a lawful neutral character. Likewise, he might have at least passing respect for those who uphold the law, and respect for those laws themselves - just so long as everyone is clear that his own personal code is paramount. ~Ginger |
