| Aqua_Regia08-15-07, 04:12 PM | The DM for my latest campaign is looking for much more backstory than what we're used to. I've got an outline he's fine with, but he wants more details. I was hoping that this board could help with it. Main Points: - Raptoran born with all black feathers. (Highly unusual according to RotW). - Village shaman/cleric/druid foresees that this person will cause some kind of strife or conflict. - An old monk agrees to take custody of the child. - Child grows up learning the monk's ways. - The old monk dies, so the Raptoran wanders around. - Falls in with a group of Swordsages, learns from them. - Combines teachings of the monk and swordsages together. - Gets called by a noble to help (Current Campaign) So the main things I'm looking for help with: - What was the exact prophecy? - Who is the monk, and why was he trusted by the village? - What feat or exploits has the Raptoran accomplished to gain enough notoriety to be called? - What's this guy's name? (I'm horrible with choosing names.) As you might've guessed, the build is Monk6/Swordsage1/Shadow Sun NinjaX, if that's important with the background. Any help at all is appreciated. |

Perhaps the monk had encountered this particular group of Raptorans before and impressed them with his storytelling (a high Perform (Oratory) check). As for how he met them in the first place, he could be a member of an earlier adventuring party that helped them somehow, either directly or by taking care of some problem that was bothering them indirectly. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose08-16-07, 12:03 AM | The best prophecies are vague and impossable to pin down or get under from. "The black-winged child rides an ill wind. He is pushed by a storm that will batter aside stronger and more righteous men. Where he goes a tornado passes destroying and leaving whole at random. The child is a harbinger of destruction and we must be away from it." You'll note that while the prophet says destruction follows you he never claims you as the cause. ------------------------------------------------------------ Unless your starting with that build completed its not a matter of you were called but rather you were chosen to answer a general call. Indeed even if you have completed the build it may still be a matter of your order chose you to respond to a plea for aid they recieved rather than you personally. Ninja generally aren't well known so unless you have an existing tie to the noble chances are he didn't call you personally. ------------------------------------------------------------ I think their is usually a section on names in the book that introduces the race. Just pick one straight out of it. After all if your mother named you its not like you got to choose your name for yourself. |

The best example i can think of is from the tv series Angel. In it, there was a prophecy stating that angel would be a major deciding factor in the comming armageddon. The crux was though that the prophecy never stated which side angel would be fighting for (good or evil) so instead of tryin to kill him, the bad guys were constantly tryin to corrupt him, and make him into a bad guy. This might help you add a little twist on the background, hopefully. Peace |

Actually, the prophecy didn't refer to Angel specifically, but an unnamed "vampire with a soul". Angel fit the bill, but for the last season or two, so did William "The Bloody", a.k.a. Spike. So, toward the end, there was a bit of uncertainty regarding whether the prophecy even applied to Angel at all. |
