I have a level 11 character (rouge 7/ ninja spy 4) who was friends with the other PC's for several years and needs mostly a storyline. The campaign in appearently going to be based on destorying evil, but my character can't be good (because of ninja spy). I've decided to be true neutral and not make many decisions, but just follow around the LG leader of the group. My character just seems to be along for the ride, staying with the friends that he's known for so long, but I can't really pull much else out of it. My DM says that we at least need a greatest fear and greatest desire.

Can anyone help get a lead on a background?

What sort of background are you looking for, exactly?

Do you want to be a spy for some master, who ordered you to quietly infiltrate the group for some unknown reason?

How "ninja" are you? Is it the modern "hiding-in-shadows-until-enemies-come-so-I-can-kill-them" or the actual "what-I-do-may-not-be-the-most-honorable-but-it-has-to-be-done"?

Greatest fear and greatest desire? Why?
My characters have always had goals they wanted to accomplish, but I never gave thought to whether they'd be hydrophobic or not... though I did have an idea of an arachnophobic drow (for a non-serious campaign).

Maybe you have family attachments and fear that they may be hurt? Running your character as a family father is quite interesting, I remember the odd looks I got from the group when we (during downtime between adventures) told them that I wasn't at the tavern with the rest of them, but rather at home with my family.

Really, you just need one or two ideas and the rest will come to you.

Hope I've been of any help to you,

Best of Luck,

Some good questions above. It might also help to go for a LN and be from a similar organization or group that the other PCs are from. If not the same, then an allied one. This would give you reasons in common to cooperate, as well as friendship, but would leave you as the more shadier sort.
