Greetings.

You see before you a man in dire straits. I am now two weeks late with my character submission, and I can't seem to nail down that one perfect concept that I've been looking for.

So I come to you, swallowing my pride and seeking help. The game is set in the Forgotten Realms (currently Silverymoon, but tends to move a lot), and I will be starting at level 15.

Class and race are largely irrelevant (within reasonable limits), along with the rest of the crunchy bits. Disregard mechanics entirely, flavour is what I'm looking for. So, anything that can spark creativity is welcome, be it just a few lines, a song, a picture, or a full, detailed biography for something you already had in mind.

Try to avoid the aasimar, fey, genasi, fey'ri, half-vampires and the avariel. Same goes for the 'noble background' themes. I'd prefer something gritty, noir and hard-edged. I've always wanted to try one of the underdog races like half-orc, but I'm having difficulties creating a good, 3-dimensional character while avoiding all the clichés. The refined elitist concepts are fine too, I just tend to play those often so I thought a change of pace would do me good.

:help:!

P.S.
Interesting reasons for why the character would be in the city to begin with, and for why he would want to leave, would be much appreciated as well.

Tiefling? A city dweller, battling with their own soul to avoid succumbing to evil, prone to not acting fast, as they don't want to act rashly and regret it. Make it LN/TN/CN or something. Buy up ranks in gather information, sense motive, bluff, and knwoledge(local).

And think about how the tiefling managed to survive. What patron did they have? Who took care of them as a child? Do they owe any debts to this patron/protector? Were they an an escaped slave? What legal rights do they possess?

Illumians(Am I spelling that right?) From races of destiny might be nifty, possessing interesting mental powers.

What legal rights do they possess? I was actually considering something like that. The inner conflict is always a nice touch.

Illumians(Am I spelling that right?) From races of destiny might be nifty, possessing interesting mental powers. A little too new, a little too exotic. For my taste at least (and yes you are).

Your first suggestion made me rethink the design of this thread. It's probably way too broad and undefined for most people, so I'll just go ahead and list some of the concepts I've been kicking around...

1. Doctor Ashern Nore, former apprentice-surgeon of Neverwinter, secret practitioner of the forbidden arts, man of logic and a self-proclaimed visionary. Creepy obsession with ideals of beauty, a strange combination of necromancy and nip/tuck. Charming and deeply unsettling at the same time, with an equally insane imp familiar, who poses as a white raven. (human, dread necromancer)

Probably inappropriate for the campaign due to his.. unorthodox methods. Integration would not be easy, and completely background-less so far.

2. Elexis Dash (born d'Armaine), eccentric theatre owner/mask-maker, pioneer of music arcana, fey slave on the run, decadent dandy with a troubled past. (human, bard / sublime chord)

I have a decent story for this one, but for some reason I can't shrug off the feeling that a bard would be just too.. well, weak. Also, roleplaying the various perform effects is something I don't find particularly attractive. Writing poetry and singing.. not really my thing.

3. Ravein von Kramer-Sprenger (yes, the last name was snatched from another thread, just fits nicely with the theme), faithless inquisitor, former priest, Max Payne meets Keanu's Constantine.. possibly with a touch of infernal heritage -- unknown to the character? (human or tiefling, cleric / church inquisitor / sacred exorcist)

Again, not easy to find hooks for. History still very vague.

4. Half-orc (possibly albino), rough melee ranger type (or barbarian, or druid) with a heart of gold. Modest and kind, bears many emotional scars. Ruthless when situation demands it, but almost childishly naive and benevolent at other times. Smart and inquisitive, but lacks any formal education.

Interesting option, but I fear the concept art and descriptions left a fairly poor image of what half-orcs are, and what they (must!) look like, in people's minds. Probably the easiest to introduce, as he has no real ties anywhere, and desires only to be recognized and accepted, as a friend, as an equal, as a person (as opposed to stereotype, or freak).

5. Tiefling assassin, childhood slavery, maybe some Aerie-like (Baldur's Gate II) wing-clipping, dangerous man born of a harsh life, perhaps looking for a 'way out' (we all know what retirement means in this line of business).

This could also be done with human, or drow, or.. kenku, but I'm drawing a total blank. Can't seem to make it different enough, and I don't even know where to place him. There's no slavery in the north (save for maybe Luskan?), and Calimport is going way too close to Entreri if you ask me...

If you have any tips, or think there's some overlooked potential there, by all means, do share. Anyone else reading this by the way? There may be... cookies involved. :incog:

Who else is in the party? 1...Might be difficult if others are squeamish or you can't really nip/tuck them. How much combat are you expecting? How much time in a city?

So 1 is not a bad idea, just need a city based, non-combat campaign. Doable in DnD, through other systems(d20 modern might work) might do it better.

2...Hrm. Warlock, Beguiler, or warblade? Warlock is easy to get, but difficult to make powerful. Warlocks have a connection to fey, since fey can make warlocks easily. Also, there are fey heritage feats.

Warblade would be going the swashbuckler route, a man kidnapped and enslaved by fey, who taught him how to fight in an elegant style. A Warblade would be an excellent bodyguard or gladiator.

Beguiler is another good route. It's an spellcasting skill monkey with no perform skills or song. This is probably what you want.

3. Are you a good priest or a bad priest? Seems a bit dark, might not work well for some campaigns. Again, inquisitor might squick people out.

4. Swordsage(Tiger Claw) or Druidic avenger. Feral, vicious and fast. Both make use of a good WIS score, so they might be untrained but very wise and perceptive.

5. Tiefling, hrm? How was he made? Maybe a succubus cult? What happened to his parents/Grandmomma Fiend? What does his blood make him do? Does he have a vicious temper? Where is he from? Maybe he is an escapee from the Zhent or other organization that deal with devils. So he would have an undying hated for that organization. Maybe they don't like it when tools run off. Tools know what happens if they run. Running just delays it. It will come in time.

And he wants to just keep running, and thinks that the party will make an excellent meat shield.

First of all, thank you for replying (twice!) :)

Who else is in the party? Very roughly, 2 fighters, 1 sorceress, 1 cleric, 2 thieves, 1 psion, and a ranger (archer).

1...Might be difficult if others are squeamish or you can't really nip/tuck them. How much combat are you expecting? How much time in a city?

So 1 is not a bad idea, just need a city based, non-combat campaign. Doable in DnD, through other systems(d20 modern might work) might do it better. Combat is present, but social encounters and character development form the majority of the campaign. I don't know how long exactly they plan on staying in Silverymoon, but city-based adventures seem common enough. DN isn't that weak combat-wise anyway, I was more concerned about the whole... undead theme. Some characters might not mind, but if one or two do, the whole thing could crumble down. He could keep his 'correcting' tendencies to the undead exclusively, as it gives him more freedom, without having to worry about repercussions associated with living subjects (taught by experience?), but it's still a fine line to walk. I imagine him as a stylish gentleman followed by a coterie of undead mannequins he refers to simply as 'the beautiful people' (they would follow him around, posing and gesturing to emphasize his mood or tone, disguised to look human, if disturbingly perfect and silent). I would really need to speak with the DM about this though, not much else to say.

Warlock doesn't really fit this particular character, but beguiler might just be what I'm looking for. Completely forgot about it! Speaking of forgotten, the Master of Masks PrC would be just perfect on him, but it is just mindnumbingly terrible.

Warblade sounds very nice, but I fear ToB content would be pushing the DM a little too far. People keep saying the mechanics are great and easy to learn, but I've had the book for months now, and I still haven't gotten to it. Considering that the game is pretty core-only-ish and oldfashioned, I just don't feel I have the right to ask for something like that.

3. Are you a good priest or a bad priest? Seems a bit dark, might not work well for some campaigns. Again, inquisitor might squick people out. A good priest (neutral at worst), but also one who has seen a lot, and whose methods have become questionable over the years. Sort of in the 'gray guard' domain, if you will. He no longer belongs to any official church of faith; his quest is his own, and his powers more a sign of singleminded devotion and long-term habit than any sort of 'divine gift.' He knows the rituals, he knows the ins and outs. It's only a matter of not believing that 'you've lost it.'

Or perhaps he cut a deal with darker forces in order to continue doing what falls into his personal definition of right or good. Sold his soul or something along those lines. I'm thinking.. strong revenge moments somewhere in his background.. great loss, denial. 'Shadow of his former self' kind of character. Exorcist might be a better term than inquisitor. But both were put there just for illustrative purposes, to generate an image of a weary holy man who has walked the line long enough to realize that it doesn't really exist. Shades of gray.

4. Swordsage(Tiger Claw) or Druidic avenger. Feral, vicious and fast. Both make use of a good WIS score, so they might be untrained but very wise and perceptive. Again, ToB is out sadly. Druidic avenger, I'd have to take another look at. Far too late (or early) here now. But as I said in the original post, mechanics aren't that important. I'm more concerned about the personality and history aspects.

The original idea was for him to be a descendant of a fallen angel (so Erinyes devil I suppose), but either approach is good. Love the Zenth suggestion. Do you happen to know what book contains the most fluff on Zhentil Keep and the Black Network in general? I'm not so familiar with them, but there's definitely something there.

Ask your DM if the Black Network is controlled by Cyric or Bane, I think it varies, but it's also a geographical issue. A Bane or Cyric sect somewhere wouldn't be an issue, they probably invade each other's territory like crazy.

So, Faiths and Pantheons. Look up whichever god you want, but you seem more lawful, so maybe Bane(It's also the one I know more about). Not sure if he is raised by a LE cult and turns LN, still keeping his lawful teachings and falling easily into order, or rebels against his CE upbringing. However, Erinyes are LE, priests of Cyric get the holy dopeslap for summoning them, and Erinyes would work with Clerics of Bane much much much more. That and I have a slight bias.

Picking up the setting book for the region(In this case, the Silver Marches) is a good step forward.

Lords of Darkness also has great info on the Church of Bane. It has a better section on the Zhentarim.

EDIT: Sorry, the Silver Marches are not something I have focused on, so I had to read up on it. But there are plenty of Bane worshipers in Sundabar.

But before I go any farther, which is more appealing, Bane or Cyric?

Cyric may be more rogue-like, in comparison to the in-your-face tyrant that is Bane, but both would work just fine. According to what you said, I suppose Bane makes more sense, all things considered. I'll take a look at Silver Marches and LoD a bit later and see if I can dig up any interesting details.

I think Bane has plenty of assassins, either through the Zhentarim or through cleric/monks. Someone could have trained him to be sneaky easily, and the church of Bane isn't in the habit of turning down minions. So if you perfer Bane, he does have access to rogue types.

If tieflings are seen as the sneaky type, then the Banites will most likely train him that way, trying to utilize his natural talents. But if he has a flashy monk style, he can be traced back to the Iron Fist, and hence to Bane. So maybe a knife fighter(Or whatever weapon) trained him to fight.

Heya, it may be a bit too late to give you any usefull ideas but one character concept i had knocking around-

Its fairly steriotypical but hey, A NE athiest Gnome Alchemist who spicalisies in throwing around bottles of alchemist fire and acid ...mabye even some home made explosives :incog: ... I had quite an interesting back story, he grew up in a clan of religous gnomes (not the submarine making ones) but due to a pretty serious antiGarl speech in the main temple of GarlGlittergold he was imprisoned, After years of studying alchemical guides he plotted his escape. Using only simple ingrediants he managed to create a large explosive device and blew his way out of the strong hold.

Now fleeing from the gnomish authorities he finds himself in a human city to hide from them (his reason for bieng in a city) but now some gnomish trackers have found his wherabouts so he is on the move again (reason for leaving the city) he believes that he will have a greater chance of survival with a group of people (reason for joining the other pc's)

As I said its probably too late for you to use it but I thought I would try to help anyways. :twitch:
