This is a 3.5 Forgotten Realms campaign with Book restrictions:
3.5 SRD
The 4 Complete books(CW, CD, CAdv, CArc)
Expanded Psionic Handbook (No races from the Psionic book are allowed)
The Player's Guide to Faerun
race LA is limited to +2 max.

The campaign so far has been about the rise of a dead god and we have been fighting a lot of Drow and Evil Sorcerers. I believe we will be heading into the underdark soon... but that is speculation.

This is what I have so far...

Ashbane of Damara
Ashbane grew up on the wrong side of the kingdom, but aspired to be Knight and protector to his lord. That dream came true after years of arduos training. But it was soon stolen from him by a conclave of vile evil. Ashbane failed to do the task he dreamed of as a boy... Now a banished knight to a murdered King, Ashbane searches Faerun hunting down the evil who killed his Sire.

My original character in the campaign was a Warlock who was destined to be the conduit for this dead god. Well he suceeded (and became an NPC in the process). His family was envolved in the overthrowing of Ashbane's king (they were sorcerers & warlocks working for the drow). My new character (to help give him motivation in the party) is seeking the last of the conclave who murdered his king and their lineage (my old character) and reclaim his honor.

Race: Human
Ashbane isn't a Knight in shining armor that rides in on horseback. He is more of a tactical weaponmaster. I was thinking either the Knight's Sword (bastard sword) or something less traditional like a Heavy Flail or Glaive. He is about opportunities and making the most of his enemies' mistakes.

I have several ideas on progression. I will list a couple here.

Progression I -
1 Fighter 1 - Combat Expertise, Dodge, Improved Unarmed Strike
2 Fighter 2 - Improved Trip
3 Fighter 3 - Karmic Strike
4 Fighter 4 - Combat Reflexes
5 Fighter 5
6 Fighter 6 - Defensive Throw, Deft Opportunist
7 Fighter 7 -
8 Fighter 8 - Improved Disarm
9 Fighter 9 -
10 Fighter 10 - Weapon Focus

This is where I currently stand, I was thinking of going Kensai for the next 10 levels (mostly because the campaign doesn't seem to have a lot of down time or magic shops to buy stuff) and it fit the idea I was thinking of, maybe some Exotic weapon master also?

Here is another idea I had...

Progression II
1 Samurai 1 - Track, Improved Initiative, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (B. Sword)
2 Samurai 1 / Fighter 1 - Weapon Focus (B.Sword)
3 Samurai 1 / Fighter 2 - Mage Slayer
4 Samurai 1 / Fighter 3 -
5 Samurai 1 / Fighter 4 - Blind-Fight
6 Samurai 1 / Fighter 4 / Occult Slayer 1 - Pierce Magical Protection
7 Samurai 1 / Fighter 4 / Occult Slayer 2
8 Samurai 1 / Fighter 4 / Occult Slayer 2 / Dark Hunter 1
9 Samurai 1 / Fighter 4 / Occult Slayer 2 / Dark Hunter 2 - Pierce Magical Concealment
10 Samurai 1 / Fighter 4 / Occult Slayer 3 / Dark Hunter 2

Finish up both Dark hunter and Occult Slayer then maybe go exotic weapon master.

The campaign will most likely end somewhere between 16 and 18. I dont think we will make 20.

Any help would be appreciative.

Try the Character Optimisation Board.

I am not trying to optimize the character... I am trying to develope him

if I wanted to optimize him I would go the power attack leap attack combat brute tactic or something.

I am looking for a fun build that has interesting roleplaying potential but works.

Optimization forum seems to try and stick Shou Disciple and shadowlord into every build.

Are you starting Level 3, Level 10 or Level 13?

Need this to know where to start with your character background.

he will be 6th

Right now most of the group were part of the Silver Ravens from Sembia sent to the Anuroch to investigate a mining town that strange rumors were surfacing from. We heard the the zents or the harpers were showing interest and Sembia wanted to be apart of the action.

My old character died after discovering a Drow conclave in the desert that was kidnapping the gnomes from a mine. I also found out that the Drow were in league with the Sorcerers that have been overthrowing small governements and using dopplegangers to replace heads of state.

It was rumored that we may have to follow the drow into the underdark.

If you are going for the Kensai, a strong lawful streak is in order and it would be interesting if you played a Paladin / Kensai with the oath to find the evil that destroyed your past.

The combination gives you good saves and decent fighting power. If you are willing to sacrifice spell power, then take the Mage Slayer feats (tie it to your background - you know that it was an evil warlock that was instrumental in the fall of your kingdom, just not exactly sure who it is).

That would also tie-in nicely with the Occult Slayer class should you intend to go that route. Just be careful about roleplaying this one, as there would be some conflict of interest between Paladin code and Occult Slayer code (which could end up really interesting RP wise if your DM plans something specifically to test where your loyalties lie but may screw up your character power wise).

For your second build, the Samurai is a little out of place. Your background denotes you failed your kingdom somehow, and that would mean you automatically become a Ronin instead.

Hope this is what you wanted comment on... :)

Well you are thinking Asian samurai... I wasn't really seeing it as an eastern reference. Samurai can just as easily be a Knight, which is why I was using it.

Paladin doesn't fit. I dont see him as a religious man or one granted with divine favor.

He is a soldier... an honorable one.

For the rules side.
The only difference between Samurai and a Fighter at first level is that Samurai get different skill choices (which reflects a knight very well and was why i picked it opposed to using a fighter at 1st) and instead of a bonus feat, they just get exotic weapon proficiency (bastard sword). Which is also known as a Knight's Sword.

I would personally try a rogue/fighter build if your going to take "advantage" of mistakes.

Try maybe Rogue 3/fighter 2 to start and go from there, I have played a rogue that uses a bastard sword (knights blade) to much success :O).

Hope this helps.

Samurai as a knight is good.

A suggestion though, if you are going to take your second route, is to have your 1st level feat replaced with Blind Fighting and replace 2 levels of Fighter with Ranger 2.

You get Two-Weapon Fighting (while not in heavy armor), better saves, better skill selection, more skill points for only a slight dip in hit dice.

The Ranger levels could denote the path you took to surviving on your own after you went into exile. It would have come later in your career though, so you can't min/max Ranger at level 1 for the skill points.

actually that is a good suggestion on the Ranger. I just didnt want to get too cheesy monkey with multiple base classes
