I was looking for wizard-y PrCs and this one jumped out at me. The flavor I think I'll go for is your stereotypical bookworm nerd, but I'm not sure how to flesh out the details. Thematically, I think human would be a good race choice, though I'm more partial to sun elf for the +int (FR setting). Skillwise I'd go with concentration, some spellcraft, decipher script, and as many knowledge skills as I can. I'm not sure what feats would be a good match up though. Collegiate wizard seems perfect, but what else?

Keep in mind I'd like to maintain some combat efficiency/usefulness, although that's not a huge priority.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Well being a wizard combat efficiency is decided mostly on spell selection so we wont worry about that. Personality wise i would say either sage like with a calm knowledgeable personality or my preference, an individual that is obsessively curious. If there is something he doesn't know he has to learn it, he asks lots of questions if he is unfamiliar with something and makes a note of anything he could not figure out so he can look it up when he goes back to town. He shows frustration when he cannot figure something out and elation when people are eager to listen to what he knows, he never becomes too frustrated though because he knows research ultimately holds all the answers. Make a point of using his knowledge skills frequently.

If you want a little combat stuff... then Sun Elf would be a great choice, as they get Longsword proficiency as a racial benefit, aswell as being talented wizards. Plus they make cool wizard concepts :D

The other thing you could do, is to put a lot into getting as many of the Knowledge skills as possible, and be able to provide details about whatever foe the party meets, their weaknesses, such as to get through damage reductions, energy resistance... going for Energy Substitution of some kind (such as the feat or Archmage) to tailor for whatever you face... having weapons of the different metals, or that Metalline weapon ability.

Absolute confidence in your know-it-all-ism, arrogance, if you dont happen to know, then the creature has no weakness, basically saying anything other than admitting you dont know. Of course, upon any occurance of failing to know the answer, you'd have to immediately do some extensive studying to make sure it doesn't happen again.

thanks for the great ideas. I really like that "if i don't know it, it must not exist" and frustration when something comes up that he doesn't know angles in particular.

On a slightly unrelated note: another friend in the campaign decided to make a spellcaster who also has the collegiate wizard feat, and we thought it would be nice to relate the backstories and have our characters know each other from mage school. Are there any feats/skills/tactics that could support this angle? The only one I've seen so far is Cooperative Spellcasting, but to be honest it's kind of underwhelming.

The only thing i can think of, is the Icantatrix (or Incantater for males), who can apply metamagic on a willing spellcasters spells with a Spellcraft check, its in Players Guide to Faerun.

But the main thing, is to not both have all the same spells prepared, that if one of you doesn't have the right spell for the occasion, then the other spellcaster will.

If you do go Human Able Learner might suit you. Being able to have atleast a rank in anything at a 1 for 1 cost is a great If I don't know it it must not exist kind of guy. I have heard good things about Factotum(sp) from one of the newer books as it gets all skills as class skills and 6+Int Skill points If you take that at first level with the Able Learner Feat your "know it all" will be well on his way.

Loremaster is a cool PrC. A bit feat intensive but reimburses you for atleast one of them. For the true Know it all though levels of Archivist might not hurt. That will however cut into the combat effectiveness.

Shouldn't hurt too much unless the game leans toward the power gamery, which is not bad it just requires a more focused build.

For a more Focused Build I would go with a Diviner/Divine Oracle/Loremaster. build for the know it all feel without any loss to combat effectiveness, plus you get levels of d6 HP yay.

Good Luck
