I was just wondering about the Madness Prestige Domain...

Assuming that your DM did allow your character to take this prestige domain, how would you role play it? I mean, under the description, it states that you basically gain increasingly potent spells with the penalty of not being as "aware" of your surroundings. How would this guy be played??? Does it mean that the character would have to be mad, or would you just act as if your wisdom score were lower? Please help.

If you tell us where to find this Prestige Domain, perhaps we can take a closer look and then come back to you with ideas?

My take on the madness domain is that you are less aware of your surroundings because you are more aware of the oddities and bizarreness that links everything together. You are not mad, exactly, but it definitely may seem so to an observer.

Suggestions:

Giggle a lot. Especially when inappropriate.

Point out things that other people can't see. When they admit they don't see them, explain that obviously they aren't enlightened enough to see them.

Behave erratically, but still with some twisted logical reason behind it. "Sorry, I can't eat the beef jerky. Beef comes from cows, as does milk. Milk is used to make cheese. Cheese is covered in mold. Mold is bad for you. Therefore beef jerky is bad for you. I'll just eat the pork skins."

Just don't go overboard with it, or to the point that it detracts from the other players' fun.

Ahh, the good ol' Madness Domain. My current Cleric's bread 'n' butter. It can be difficult to RP well, but like many other facets of your character, RPing it can be done more easily by looking at your character as a whole and then deciding what mannerisms, sayings, etc. would best fit both the Madness Domain and your character's personality.

For example, my Cleric worships a God that almost no-one else has ever heard of, the God of Dreams and Madness. He very rarely gives his opinion on things directly, opting instead to say things like, "My God doesn't think that would be a... prudent course of action." Letting his God do the thinking for him, in a way. The funny thing is that this God of his seems completely like a figment of his distorted imagination in that He doesn't seem to affect the Material Plane at all, except for the fact that he gives my Cleric Divine Powers.

A big tip would be to make sure that, whatever you do, it's done entirely in the spirit of fun, doesn't hurt any other players, and doesn't interfere with anyone else's fun. I know this should go without saying, but there are times where it would be more appropriate to RP a character in a manner which could potentially hurt other players. As an example, my Cleric, if RPed 100%, might be more inclined to not heal the party after a battle, but I wouldn't do that because then the other players would be displeased.

Of course, he still acts very erratically, and definitely giggles at inappropriate times. It's great fun if RPed well, and the rest of the party things he's just super, what with the healing and all.
