| Shalamar42002-29-04, 12:42 AM | I've been playing with a small group for a few months now and I realized I need some help with my charater's path. After a few more sessions, I think a PrC may be a option for our characters. I'm playing as a gnome sorcerer, chaotic neutral, that is very curious about magic (especially magic items), smart, and is usually the party speaker. I've read about the Mage of the Arcane Order and it sounds like a good idea. Fizzban, my gnome, has some character history where his father was all involved in teaching at a wizards guild, so I think there is something for my DM to pull in to get me introduced to the guild. But my DM doesnt doesnt know anything about the MoAO PrC, I dont know a lot either. I'm trying to figure out the best way for ME to introduce the PrC to my DM. --He and I need help with stuff like: What would my responsibilities be within the guild? What about guild dues, training, and equipment costs? Where would they meet? Big cities? Far off towers? I also had questions about getting the most out of the Mage of the A. O. Is this even a legit class for a sorcerer? On a more basic level, besides the required feats, what should I get as far as levels for a multi-class? I dont want to feel totally munchiny, but my DM is real tough in combat, I NEED any advantage I can get. |

But even though it says that I would say both sorcs and wizs can be the PrC because it doesn't say that it is exclusive. Another thing to note is that the specials are more geared towards wizard with gaining metamagic feats and also at lvl 4 and 8 I belive you can learn a new spell, but it only applies to wizards since its copying it from someone elses book into yours. Basicly after you pay your 750gp fee to enter it, you pay 30gp a month to be able to use the order's library, you can also use the labs there to produce items (but you still pay for materials for what your making) You also must show up on the campus at least once every 6 months. You may also have to accept commissions by the Order when your lower level. At level 10 of the order, you get a seat on the council to help make the rules and such and must show your face at least six times at the council meetings in the year I belive. Where would they meet? Where ever the order was located, it could be one large building in an established city, or it could be many buildings, or one big building in one city and small towers in other cities. Its up to your DM on that part. The spellpool ability 1-3 lets you use lvl 1-3 spells at one and 4-6 spells at two and 7-9 spells at 3. Pretty much it takes a full round to call up a spell providing you still have an open unused slot of the approprite level and you can cast that spell begining of your next turn. And anything in between is perks and bennies like learning an extra spell (mentioned above) metamagic and new language. That about sums it up. One more thing is that the "Order" is obviously a bit more lawful aligned as a whole though i doubt they would turn down any caster who could show their stuff. |

CN is not a good alignment for a sorc like this to have though. Any mage order is an "order" anyhow. It has structures and responsibilities. A sorcerer who gets in is already pushing his limits by learning some of the strict casting habits of wizards through his arcane preparation feat. He is also trying to establish himself as a valuable member for the order. In a strictly legal sense it is possible though. It will be hard to RP and poses a bit too many problems with that alignment I think. Anyhow. For the MoAO to exist you need to have some wizard order in the campaign world. Perhaps the wizards of one city have their established arcane university and the order is part of that. Or perhaps the wizards of some nation have their own agenda and the order is there to help fulfil it. The order can be a secret order (then you would not tell people you are part of one) ("Cult-of-the-Dragon") or it can be an established very visible order. "All hail the scholar-mages-of-Neverwinter!". It is up to you to help your DM design an order you are part of. The Mage orders are a nice feature to have in your games. There are thieves guilds after all, and wizards are more expected to be organized than thieves are IMO. Sisyfos |
