This should be fun... I'm entering a game with a human wizard/cleric that is working for true necro AND a dwarven monk with a VoP. the good thing is that the human is LN vs. LE but i still have to be the face/skill monky (i'm thinking beguiler)

I was thinking something like a retired spy or something like that. Truth be told I'm not very good at making story-lines and only average at best at role-playing (something I'm working on) so any ideas in how to introdudce my self to the group and habits to help flech out this guy would be much aprecated.

thanx guys

You should ask this on the character optimization forums. The development forum focues more on character backgrounds, biographies and personalities.

sorry i guess i get too carried away with the mechanics of the game over the background/roll-play part (i come from a get-tough-or-die group). so i'll edit to reflect this as best as i can.

What Campaign Setting are you in? Eberron is vastly different from Greyhawk or FR, for example.

That said...retired spy could be an interesting angle. Are you open to having a slightly older starting character? A graying professional would make an interesting change from the usual 20-somethings who seem to dominate PC creation.

Beguiler or Bard are both good classes flavor-wise. If you want to break the game, there's Fred the Diplomancer (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=452425) (+72 Diplomacy at level 6), but assuming you don't, it's still not a bad thread to look at for general tips on the mechanical points of your concept.

As to your background...let's go with the "ex-spy" idea. To get started, think on a few general questions. What do you do, why do you do it, how did you get started? Who knows you, who fears you, who will shelter you, who will kill you on sight?

Were you a skilled thief who got arrested and offered a way out in the form of service? Did you train for the position all your life because you wanted to? Were you thrown into it by chance?

What's your alignment? Why? Did you spy for the benefit of the nation, or did you do it to gain info you could later use yourself? Lots of potential if you double-crossed agents of the Crown, since that adds to your shady past and brings up options for encounters in the form of pursuers.

There's a great deal to answer; as you start making the general decisions, they ripple and help you start to shape the smaller details of your character.

oh wow...

*inhales* OK. We are starting at lvl3 so a lower rung spy could more likely retire after a botched mission i think that I'll be playing a middle aged beguiler for this. Right now we are in a homebrew campain.

I shouldn't have to detail the misson i retired from and simply refuse to talk about it like an old veit-nam vet about the war...

Who could leave at a whim be accepted by any community AND never be questioned?... the Docter. I could travel the country side in a carriage/ambulance, that should work.

Who would know me... I get back to that one.

My char would have had a high cha at low lvls so recruitment is a very likely option but for flavor sake we will say that chance swept him away during an enlistment in the navy/marines ,the needed someone to slip the moorings or scope the port for occupation ect.)

What's my alignment... hmmm based on this I'm not sure.

stumped...

OK. I think that LN is my best bet for an alignment. It should match the circuit docter life style as well as the Ex-spy background (+1 everyone else is lawful or nuetral somthing).

Other than this i can't think of any thing else to add should this be good enough? like i said i came from a get-tough-or-die-group so this may be a little rough.

Quick question:
In working for the vow of poverty monk, how and why do you get paid?
Get tough by selecting the following feats:
Toughness (not optimal, but flavorful),
Arcane Toughness from PHB2,
Arcane Consumption (also PHB2).
These feats grant you +3 hp, and the ability to dump a prepared spell slot for the spell level value in hp to stabilize. Empower a spell by taking Con damage. With just two feats, which should be easy enough to net, you have
a pretty powerful and surprising caster.

I'm not working FOR the monk he is joining the campain at the same time as I am.I am making a Char to head off any arguments the true-necro-to-be and the VoP monk.
And I'm planning on improved toughness but thanx for the other stuff.

I have come to a rather large bump/fork in the road for this char.

the issue lies in the choice in race... if i make a human it fits the ideal better but if i choose a gnome it will function better.

the whole reason for a human is because this is the old guy everyone trusts AND he is at eye level...

but with the gnome the small size and bonuses to illusion ect. fits the function better but I can't se this guy as a gnome.

So the question is form over function or function over form?
