| jsears200205-17-05, 11:08 PM | I am trying to make a Jedi/Sith like character for a D&D adventure. this is what I thought so far. Swashbuckler for a few levels Prestige: Mindspy for few levels Master of the unseen hand Kensai How does this combination sound? I would appreciate input. Thanks |
| Shar_Narishma05-18-05, 12:01 AM | oops... double post |
| Shar_Narishma05-18-05, 12:16 AM | another one that could help, would be a level or 2 of soulknife, the mindblade works well with the jedi mindset, also, the ability to get psionic feats helps, with feats like up the wall, and speed of thought. what would be really cool would be if your DM let you apply the kensai weapon enhancements to your mindblade. |
| Kintara05-18-05, 12:28 AM | The Psychic Rogue (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040723b) has an appropriate selection of powers (look 'em over!), and also has enough skill points to fulfill their roles as diplomat/troubleshooters. Evasion and Danger Sense are certainly appropriate. The only thing that doesn't fit as well is Sneak Attack. Ask the DM if you can switch it out for Bonus (Psionic?) Feats. There's a variant normal Rogue that does something like this, so there's a precedent. If psionics ain't your bag, then I'm not sure how I'd approach it. Neither MotUH nor Mindspy are very good for a normal race, imo. It's generally hard to set them up to work. Kensai might work well, though. A Monk with one of those Eberron weapon feats that allow you to use a longsword (or double-sword) might be a good set up. A Monk/Kensai would make for a more "lightsabre" focused build. |
| jsears200205-18-05, 01:32 AM | My only problem is that psionics are banned from this campaign. So I am stuck with everything else. |
| jsears200205-18-05, 01:36 AM | What I am thinking now, short of the mindblade is the equivilent of a very lightsaber specialized jedi sort of build. I was thinking Dex speciality (weapon finesse) for the numbers to come out to good defense as well as offense. Two questions arise: 1) What is the best weapon to model a lightsaber and work with the dex build? 2) What class/prest class combos would follow this sort of "mainly lightsaber" setup really well? |
| Kintara05-18-05, 04:02 AM | A Brilliant Energy Elven Thinblade would be a decent "lightsabre." Or you could use an Elven Courtblade, if you want to wield it two-handed. Both are statted out in Races of the Wild. If you take Swashbuckler and Champion of Correlon Latherian (or whatever his name is), you can add Str, Dex and Int to damage, which is always amusing. ;) |
| Vapthorne05-18-05, 05:47 PM | If you have a copy of Races of Destiny; you can always look at the Shadow Sentinel PrC. The Umbral Blade they recieve is almost lightsaber like. There are only two issues to overcome: 1) You need to be a Illumian (you can talk to your DM if you think that's a problem), and 2) the name Shadow Sentinel / and Umbral Blade sounds more Sith-like (but the concept behind the PrC is not; it's a mental thing you'll need to overcome). Personally, I like a Monk / Shadow Sentinel / Kensai would be very Jedi-like. Or, maybe a Monk / Sorcerer / Enlightened Fist / Shadow Sentinel if you want some jedi-powers like Jump, Suggestion, Exp. Retreat, etc. |
| jsears200205-18-05, 10:12 PM | The names aren't that important. I am just looking for abilities and play-style. I can't play that race unfortunately, but maybe I can float that requirement, maybe. This is an awesome idea. But the ability to add Str DEX and INT to damage is also very intriguing. What does the brilliant energy enchantment do, by the way? |
| pres_man05-19-05, 12:35 AM | fighter/sorcerer/eldritch knight discuss. |
| Mithran Cole05-19-05, 05:59 PM | fighter/sorcerer/eldritch knight discuss. I agree the jedi have a lot of spells if you go through the course of the movies... You would be unarmored, though wearing bracers of armor will counteract the lack of armor. As for a lightsaber just get a bastard sword with no finger guard and have an illusion put on it to make it look like energy (when really its +5/keen/holy) and kick some butt. I would play a mindspy/sor/master of the unseen hand/fighter |
| pres_man05-20-05, 09:54 AM | lightsaber = flaming, brilliant energy longsword? |
| The_Yellow_Dart_Swinger05-20-05, 10:32 AM | Well, the question is do you want to play a jedi as in the class. Or a jedi as in a character that uses the jedi philosophy? Jedi's powers are defently psionic though a few wizard spells do emulate them. Jedis also rely on agilty vs strength so using classes such as swashbuckler or even a bard would do ok. As for the philosophy the best place to look that up is the net pure and simple. |
| UMiskatonic05-20-05, 12:18 PM | I'd go for Githyanki. They look weird, so they probably count as 'aliens' and they have spell-like abilities. Githyanki 2/Swashbuckler 3/Rogue 3/Master of the Unseen Hand 5 would be an strong beginning, and all you need is Complete Warrior, Player's Handbook, and a Monster Manual. To finish, I would suggest blade dancer from Oriental Adventures. If you can't get it, then Kensai is a solid #2 choice. It even fits D&D mythology. I can totally see a wandering band of Githyanki knights moving throughout the cosmos, fighting the tyranny of the Evil Illithid Empire. |
| Jodjod05-20-05, 03:34 PM | Paladin/Swashbuckler? |
| DaveReaves05-20-05, 05:34 PM | One thing you may want to consider, do you want to play a lightsaber weilding, dance around blaster fire kind of Jedi (Luke), or a stand there knowing full well that no one can touch you kind while you shcok the bejebus out of them kind of Jedi (the emporor)? You could also go with a good mix of force power and Lightsaber weilding action (Vader) If you want to do ballet while you take people out with the lightsaber, go with a Fighter / Monk. That way you can maximize use of the weapon, have insane saves and do well with no armor. DM will have to let you multiclass the monk (perhaps the Ebberon feat Monistatic Training, only call it something cool like Force Initiate). You will need decent STR, DEX and WIS. To go with the emporor's style, Sorcerer / Bard(or Aristicrat). Manipulation is the name of his game, be it in shooting lightning or taking control from the crowned heads of the monoarchy. Spells focusing on causing pain (Lightning) and manipulation the physical world (Bigby's Crushing Hand). Skills in manipulation of peoples emotions. Stay high in CHA, not much else matters. Vader is a good mix of the two, and a little tougher to pull off. Hes not as agile as other Jedi, and I'm pretty sure that his suit is some decent armor. Again, I would go with Fighter as the focus on the Lightsaber is his strogest point. As for force powers, I would go with Sorcorer again. The armor would give you a failure check, but if its only medium its not too bad. Focus on spells would be mostly physical manipulation. As for the Lightsaber its self, we have to assume its a high level weapon. I personaly like the vorpal, flaming longsword attuned so that the blade glows when weilded (not just held, but actualy used) by worthy master. It may be worth your time, however, to just make a Jedi class. |
| braindead34505-21-05, 01:17 AM | Monk base, more than a paladin base. Think about it, poverty, years of training, specialize fighting techniques and no armor all say monk, in my opinion. That only leaves the issue of the light saber. Ask you DM to allow an exchange of weapon proficiencies and scratch off say half the list (espcially the crossbows) of allowed weapons for your choice of a longsword. At 2nd or 3rd level, your monk gains a special feat which adds +1 damage/3 or 4 levels (maximum +4 to damage). This feat will cause any longsword to glow while being used by your Jedi. For "Force" powers, pick a copy of the Star Wars rule book and start there. These feats will replace those of a normal monk. |
| RedWizard05-26-05, 11:06 AM | I play in a campaign where I run a fighter 1/ Sorcerer 5/ Eldritch knight 9 and often find similiarities with playing a Jedi. Jedi Knights do not wear armour and neither do the Eldritch Knights, both use a combo of martial and arcane talents. To simulate the electrical attack, lightning bolt or chain lightning do great, for the telekinetic tricks there are several ways to approach that. SOmetimes in combat I wave a hand and levitate a opponent or use telekinisis the spell and once even used reverse gravity on a iron golem. That floored the group as I merely waved a hand and up it went. The DM was momentarily at a loss of what to do and the golem took damage from crashing into the ceiling some 70 feet up. Of course there are many other ways a Eldritch Knight can simulate "force" powers and the fact that they also go in swinging a sword helps too. In my case it's a +4 Defender longsword. I am not concerned with it looking like a lightsaber though as that is more tech in genre and if thats what I want I would just play Star Wars. As for armour I have bracers of defence and a amulet of natural protection. All in all I find it works for the general feel, a tall dark clad man in a dark cloak with a gleaming blade in one hand and tossing people like rag dolls with a wave of the other. |
| Leap05-27-05, 03:42 AM | Sith = Barbarian/Sorcerer - tap that anger :) Jedi = Monk/Sorcerer - with katana use replacing unarmed attack but getting all those bonus' |
| Rogue DM06-04-05, 09:46 PM | Add Rage Mage from CW for the Sith? |
| Aeolus9106-05-05, 03:06 PM | What does the brilliant energy enchantment do, by the way? It transforms a significant portion of your weapon (blade, point, etc.) into glowing energy. It ignores all armor bonuses to AC, but it can't damage constructs or undead. For a Jedi, you might have to change that part about constructs (you won't be able to kill droids otherwise) unless you're not playing in a Star Wars-esque campaign. I'd say a Brilliant Energy, Flaming longsword is as good a lightsaber as any. |
| Need_A_Life06-08-05, 03:49 AM | Soulknife/(Psion)Telepath for a Jedi (based on their rigorous discipline) Soulknife/Wilder for a Sith (based on their selfish emotions) Soulknife for a lightsaber wielding guy (just some guy who uses it) Psion(Telepath) for manipulating people (a la emperor) |
| Muddman06-08-05, 11:10 PM | I played one and it went rather well. Here was my class combo: Monk 2, Psychic Warrior 8, Warmind 10. Took a vow of poverty with the exception being my long sword (it was MW, but the vow of poverty usually says nothing of MW quality). I didn't have any telekinetic powers, but so what, I had an AC of like 50 and Mage Hand that I could boost using all of my power points. I also took Whirling Blade Strike (or something like that, from the eberron campaign setting) to add long sword to my monk's weapon list. Me and my DM came up with a feat that allowed me to make a Long sword a simple weapon, allowing me the Intuitive Attack feat with it (using my Wis to attack). The cost, my DM held my feet to the fire about the jedi code and my power selection was limited, but it was worth it, I was a machine. Basically the sword weilding bad ass kind of jedi. |
| fbonggo06-14-05, 07:19 AM | My Jedi character has the following build. Monk 2/Paladin 2/Sorceror 6/ Eldritch Knight 10. That is for my Jedi Consular. Change Eldritch Knight to Spellsword for Jedi Guardians The monk training is to hone the body. The paladin training is there for sword training. Sorceror training is for the "force". Eldritch knight/Spellsword will then advance them both. Focus on spells that are akin to Force Powers (e.g. Jump, Suggestion, Telekenesis, Haste, etc). I use Stunning Fist for err stunning kick attacks. Slash with saber, tumble then kick, etc. For equipment, a lightsaber can be a brilliant energy weapon or a flaming greatsword. A Robe of the Archmagi makes for good Jedi Robes and a Hat of Disguise can your saber and robes look more Jedi like :) |
