Ok I'm preparing a backup character that our DM can also use as NPC. These days we often play in a group of only 3 players as my wife is pregnant and doesn't play as often anymore and our other player is apparently taking a long break. This little guy can give us some extra punch in combat and as I'm picturing him will be lots of fun to play.

All comments are appreciated, also if you feel like doing a rewrite of his background, or a story made up based on his character feel free to do so. Emglish is obviously not my native tongue and I appreciate all the help I can get from some of you tallented storytellers.

I'm roughly following the " How to create a role-playing character" thread by Trydan to develop the background :

the concept

Slender and frail looking kobolt who believes he is the son of Khyber (Eberron mythical Dragon) and the blood of the mythical dragon flows through his veins.

Expand the concept into a brief summary

Razipul son of Khyber is a frail looking fellow even for a kobolt, he is quite pale compared to his brethren and one could mistake his appearance as one being weak of health. Looks are deceiving however as Razipul is quite though and harnesses strange powers he claims to be linked to his claimed heritage.
He is an excentric loner who often talks to himself though he doesn't mind the company of others as long as they tollerate his odd behavior (if people ask him to whom he talks he simply tells them "to shaka ofcourse" as if they are stupid for not seeing his imagenary fire mephid companion). He likes to brag that he is as old as the world itself (and truely believes this as well) and for some reason he refuses to share, he fears cats above all, fears they will steal his soul (yeah I read the 1001 character Quircks :).
As a profession, as far as you can call it that, Razipul is a crafter of magic wands. He doesn't often part from them but sells an occasional wand if he feels he needs gold in his dealing with the 'young' races. As such Razipul collects all sorts of little stiks and twigs he finds along the way in the hopes of creating a wand out of them as soon as he can spare the time. A small side effect of this is that occasionally he mixes up his real wands with his commen sticks since he keeps all of them in the same magic quiver. He then tries invain to cast spells from them cursing them fiercly for not working.
Razipul is, dispite all his odd behavior, a very calculated individual rarely acting on emotion and always carefully considering his options. Weighing the odds. He is a survivor and will do whatever it takes not to step in harms way. He'll often persuade others to avoid a fight.

Abilities: Str 4, Dex 16, Con 15, Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 18
Invocations : Flee the scene (40ft), See the Unseen, Spiderwalk
Feats: Legendary Artisian, Craft Wand, Improved Natural Armour
Primary Skills: Use Magic device, Bluff, Hide, Concentration, knowledge history
Equipment: Masterwork Leather armour, wand of alter self, wand of shield, wand of fireball
Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Background:

Razipuls history is kind of a mistery, even to himself. He vaguely remembers being young and playing among his friends, he clearly remembers his tribe and the cave complex they lived in. The mistery is that he can't remember when he was young or even the location where his tribe lived. His mind is a choas of images, visions of the past, of the rise and fall of counless empires. As he can't remember how old he is combined with the seemingly endless timeframe of his chaotic memories Razipul has become to believe he has simply been on Eberron since the beginning of time. One thing is sure his memories whether they are his own or not are tied to his powers and his rare bloodline.
All this ofcourse makes Razipul appear very strange to others he meets as he seems to know a lot about the past and speaks of things that happened ages ago as if they happened yesterday and he lived through them.

thats what I have so far, I intend to add more recent background stuff the DM can use like people he knows (enemies and friends), places he's been recently, things he has done....

hoping to get some input

I think that’s a great background story. I didn’t have anything to add really which is why I haven’t posted. It’s well thought out and seems pretty complete already.

One way you could have his background story work is he was really a powerful dragon at one point and through some kind of powerful magic he was turned into a kobold, maybe as a punishment for some misdeed.

His mind couldn’t take the idea of living as a lowly kobold and he went mad. The family of kobolds he remembers could have adopted him a very long time ago, when they saw a stumbling mad kobold take out a powerful looking bugbear (with the last spell he had from his dragon form.)

He has since slowly rebuilt his mind and his magical powers, not really remembering what he once was.

I’m just glad to know other people hear books talking to them. ;)

thanks for the response, It's like an empty cave in here sometimes :) (you know they are watching you but you never really see who or what)

I dig the dragon idea although I do feel there's more potential for later exploration with it being a mistery. It's like the prophesy, if they had fleshed it out in the campaign setting everyone would feel restricted by it because the future was already set. In my case it's the past but still I'd like to find out what my DM does with it without me hinting what my past really is.

I do think I'll hint in the history that what he believes is his family are actually those who adopted him. This still doesn't reveal much but it explains why he has powers and strange memories and his family was quite normal for kobolds.

Also I don't want to portray him as mad, he's just excentric and might appear strange to those who don't know why he acts as he does but his reasoning and way of going about things is quite structured and sane. The invisible fire mephid might have been a bit over the top, if he just imagines him he would indeed have some mental issues but again this I would like to leave a mistery. Maybe he indeed can communicate with a creature that might be on another plane for all we know, he sees it and talks to it and that's enough for him.

I could use a bit of fluff about where he has been the last few years, who he met, what impressions he left behind. Some friends he made, some enemies etc... Stuff that doesn't reveal the mistery of his past because it's all pretty recent but does give my DM some material to work with.

cheers

During the last decade Razipul befriended a small tribe of goblins in Darguun, part of the greater goblin clan called the followers of the Belest. Every year Razipul tries to visit his friends and stays with them for about a month. Razipul earned the respect of Dagoth the clans chieftain (Goblin Barbarian 3) and is especially close to Dormis and her family, her husband YGroth, and their two children Mirre and Dritac who see him as their funny uncle.
About 5 years ago upon visiting the village he found it deserted, half destroyed with bodies scattered about of both goblin and shifter. He followed the tracks leading away from the village and resqued his goblin friends from a gang of shifter slavers. Razipul however didn't stop there, he tracked down the slavers employer for several months and eventually ended up in Wroat.
During his stay in Wroat he opened a small shop selling wands partially to finance his investigation and to function as a cover. It is then he met the two young thieves Irim Peglight (Human Male, Expert 2) and Nirys Tanor (Halfling Female, Rogue 1/Expert 1) breaking into his store hoping to rid a helpless kobold from some of his riches.
Razipul easily bested the two but decided not to turn them into the law in exchange for some help with his investigation. The 3 became friends over time and thanks to Irim's underground contacts they found out a Wroat corrupt politician was behind the slave trade. Knowing they could not touch him legally they snuck into his house one night and slit his troat. Shortly after Razipul and his friends fled Wroat when the quite persistent Captain Horran Bur'rak (LG Half Orc Male, Fighter 2/Warrior 3) ended up on their trail. In their escape they lost Irim to a crossbow arrow and the two decided to split up in order to shake the captain and his guards.
Razipul hasn't heard from Nirys since, he does still occasionally visit his goblin tribe.
