| The_Fan07-10-03, 01:12 PM | I'm making a character and I'm debating whether to make it male or female. The character is a ranger with some Cajun mannerisms and patterns of speech, and his/her animal companion is a crocodile. The character is covered with scars over the majority of his/her body except the face, which is why s/he always wears a long overcoat. S/he also only has one hand, the right hand being replaced with a stump knife A major part of the character's background is that s/he was always the baby of his/her family, sheltered and protected, always kept away from hunting and rough play because his/her parents didn't want him/her to get hurt. Still, s/he wanted to become a warrior, and secretly trained to become a warrior, enhancing his/her already formidable abilities with the magic of the Bayou. One day s/he disguised herself and went on a hunting expedition in an area where several people had already disappeared. They were attacked by a mad wizard who took a few of them prisoner and killed the rest. He was doing research into pain threshholds and willpower, seing how long it would take to break even the strong-willed Bayou people. They were tortured for several months. One by one his/her compatriots died from the pain, but s/he managed to hang on. S/he realized that his/her captor would not give up until s/he was either dead or broken, so s/he decided to gradually pretend that his/her will had finally been broken by the torture, hoping that his/her captor would then make a mistake. So strong was the will to escape that to prove his/her mind had been destroyed by the torture, s/he allowed him to cut off his/her right hand without fighting back. That night the wizard left the bonds a bit looser and the door to the torture chamber unlocked. S/he managed to escape and affixed a magic knife that had been used in the torture to his/her hand. Sneaking into the wizard's room while he slept, he/she killed him, but first made sure he woke up so he would know the face of his murderer when he went to Hell. Now horribly scarred and missing a hand, s/he had a hard decision to make. S/he could return home, where undoubtedly the village would pity him/her and end up treating him/her like an invalid, or s/he could leave and never return. With a heavy heart, s/he decided to leave and never return, letting his/her family think s/he was dead. Since then s/he has become a bounty hunter specializing in bringing down mad wizards. Whenever asked about his/her scars or his/her missing hand, she deflects it with a joke, often blaming the latter on the croc and the former on a subsequent bout of poison ivy. Making jokes is easier than remembering the two and half months of agonizing torture. Lately s/he has been pondering returning home, but like they say, you can never go home again. So, what do you think? Male or female character? Also, what do you think of the backstory in general? |
| ShadeGirl07-10-03, 01:35 PM | She. A woman. In a world where woman are prized only on virtue of their homely talents or the occasional period of beauty, it would be awesome to roleplay this character. You never see anyone play a woman who is scarred and missing body parts. Its a very unique angle and a great backstory. I think it would be excellant to roleplay her. Let us know what you decide! :) -ShadeGirl |
| The_Fan07-10-03, 02:31 PM | Thanks. That's exactly what I was thinking too. The problem is my DM is biased against males playing females, because she says "I've never seen a male play a female as anything but a lesbian boink bunny!" I'll just have to make a good case for it. |
| JusticeZero07-10-03, 03:05 PM | Well, for one thing, if you look like you described, you're not going to be boinking very many people, lesbian or otherwise. Mind, at some point the cleric will track down some regenerative magics and clear up those marks for you, so you might want to think of what that will mean. Sounds like an interesting character. I'd give them a lot of Cha and Wis, myself.. the effect of the scars I can get with a patched in quality or some such (EG: add "Disfigured - LA+0 template" - provides a penalty to friendly Cha checks, but a bonus to things like Intimidate..) |
| The_Fan07-10-03, 03:15 PM | most of the scars are not readily visable due to the clothes she normally wears, aside from the obvious missing hand and one jagged scar down her left cheek. Also, regeneration is impossible due to vile magic the wizard was using during her torture. It'd pretty much take Miracle to repair the damage. Geez, it's hard to make a heavily scarred character in D&D. |
| JusticeZero07-10-03, 03:18 PM | Vile damage can, if I recall, be healed in a Consecrated area. So.. not absolute, just difficult to remove. |
| The_Fan07-10-03, 03:27 PM | I didn't necessarily mean vile damage, I just meant vile magic, meant to twist and desecrate as well as injure. Also, a wierd point: The party I'll bring this character into doesn't have a cleric. |
| ShadeGirl07-10-03, 03:38 PM | The problem is my DM is biased against males playing females, because she says "I've never seen a male play a female as anything but a lesbian boink bunny!" Hm, well, I can see where your DM is coming from at least, since I've seen several of these too. But your idea sounds seriously, excellant! To tell you the truth, I don't know how any worthy DM could not let you play this character! I know I sound really excited right now, but I always act like this whenever I hear a kick-ass character idea. This rocks! Good luck with your DM persuasion! :) -ShadeGirl |
| JusticeZero07-10-03, 05:30 PM | It doesn't matter. Someday, someone will come by and heal it. When that happens, you'll have to deal with it. |
| The_Fan07-10-03, 09:02 PM | How should I best present my case to my DM? |
| ShadeGirl07-10-03, 09:41 PM | I would do it somberly and in a very formal fashion. Tell her that you have every intention of roleplaying this character as she was meant to be played. Not as some simpering doe-eyed female, but as a wary, world-wise survivor. Express that to be able to play this character would mean alot to you, and that you think you could be the one player to change her mind about males playing females. Also say that if she at any time feels you are not fulfilling the roleplaying potential for this character, to let you know immediantly. It might help to say that everyone on the wizards boards were raving about what an awesome character concept this is. ;) Good luck -ShadeGirl |
| Edymnion07-10-03, 11:41 PM | Missing an arm, wears a long coat, covered in scars except for on the face... somebody been watching Trigun? |
| ShadeGirl07-11-03, 12:26 AM | LOL! :) |
| Nei07-11-03, 06:08 AM | Your backstory looks pretty good, The_Fan. It's developed and fairly original, and I think it's very brave to voluntarily start out the game being handicapped. As for male or female... Originally posted by The_Fan One day s/he disguised herself and went on a hunting expedition in an area where several people had already disappeared. Hmm... the entire post long, you have taken a great amount of care to write "s/he" everywhere, yet here you simply write "herself" instead of "her/himself". I think you have subconsciously already made your decision on what to play... ;) Nei |
| The_Fan07-11-03, 06:47 AM | Originally posted by Edymnion Missing an arm, wears a long coat, covered in scars except for on the face... somebody been watching Trigun? Heh. Someone pointed that out to me yesterday. Yes, I am a MAJOR trigun fan, and perhaps some of the character design of Vash did bleed into this character. She's pretty different personality-wise though. PS: If you want to see how big of a trigun fan I am, just check out my email addy. |
| Tzalice Minoladir07-11-03, 12:13 PM | hmm.. trigun... my mind jumped to gambit first ^.^ I think it's a great character. I played a one-eyed rogue once. Fortunately the DM never made any friendly people offer to regenerate the eye for her. It's never fun when they try to ruin your fun like that. Trigun's great ^.^ but she lacks the whole "not gonna kill" thing vash has I have a strong feeling. Yeah, female does lend itself more to the whole "kept at home, precious" thing. Hope the charrie works well. |
| JusticeZero07-11-03, 12:18 PM | As a general rule, when one has such a decision, flip a coin. If you find yourself saying "Best two out of three?" or "That didn't count.." then you know what your decision is. |

Yeah, female does lend itself more to the whole "kept at home, precious" thing. Hope the charrie works well. Err..yeah...definately. She is far from a pacifist, as shown by the incident where she made sure the mage was awake first before she killed him. She could even be described as a bit sadistic. What alignment would you suggest for her? |
| texaskron07-11-03, 01:35 PM | Well, she could be anything LN-CG pretty easily. LN: Almost detached clinical outlook on the hunt for crazied mages. No, real hatred simply a desire/imperative to law down some real thick justice. Maybe leaning towards the obsessive/compulsive side repeating procedures over and over: cleaning weapons and things. Certain kinds of wizards are violators of the natural order of things and must be extinguished. LN, because she's doing this to make money and possibly could enjoy it to some degree also because this is balanced by a desire to help others to an extent. She's also a tough nut to crack because she has a very rigid moral code with a desire to physically lay down the law. NG: Must protect others from the fate that befell her. But, she's organized in her personal habits and is willing to work within structures, groups, etc if necessary or if more expeditious to do so - she just wants to do good... and taking out insane warlocks is a good way to do it. LG: She's a bounty hunter because it allows her to persue both good and pure justice by giving her a budget for it. Normal people don't hunt wicked mages since they seldom have the training or inclination. She's a professional but she's doing it for the good of all. Maybe she even works for a temple. CG: Holy Liberator-type. She makes her own rules to bring down evil. She also lets no one rule her mind since it is her own and hers alone. Chaotic due to her individualistic streak. I dunno, what do others have to say? |
| The_Fan07-11-03, 04:21 PM | Hrm...people I've talked to seem to think CG. |
| MarthWMaster07-20-03, 12:07 PM | I'm thinking more along the lines of CN or CE, because I have trouble with the concept of good sadists. :) |
| Trydan07-23-03, 08:37 AM | I've mentioned this before, but the reason why males don't play female characters too well, is that they continue thinking like males. Go an read some books by authoresses, with female protagonists (Pride & Prejudice is a good example) and get a feeling for what the female mind thinks about. Female gamers tend to read male-written, male-centred fantasy literature, so they tend to be in a better position to play opposite gender characters. They also tend to hang about with males more than the other way about for the others in the group. Of course this is just my experience. Your's may be different of course. If you go the "female" path, plan your character carefully, and premeditate some reactions to some situations. It will help your character be more credible and spontaneous within the gaming group. Good luck |
| Taran07-23-03, 09:56 PM | Sure, this is completely off-topic, but that's the greatest quote I've ever seen in a while. | Edymnion07-24-03, 02:39 PM | Originally posted by Trydan I've mentioned this before, but the reason why males don't play female characters too well, is that they continue thinking like males. Nah, getting into the female mind isn't that hard. Just remember. All men are idiots, no man knows what they're doing half as well as a woman, and if all else fails, even if you don't know what you're doing, do something anyway and pretend you know what you're doing if anybody asks. There, now you're thinking like a woman ;) |
| dirk hightower07-25-03, 03:42 PM | You know the old joke: It's easy to roleplay a female character - just decide what a male character would do in that circumstance..... and then take out any logic! Seriously, the decision for a guy to role-play a female character is one not to take ligthly. Not because you can't do it.... but because the rest of your group can't handle it. The other guy players or the DM (if all guys) will pick on your character, flirt, fight, rape.... everything but treat her as an equal. In short - just like they are treated in real life! I say go for it (I've done it) - just understand that no one is going to let it be easy for you... |
| ShadeGirl07-25-03, 08:04 PM | You know the old joke: It's easy to roleplay a female character - just decide what a male character would do in that circumstance..... and then take out any logic! Ha Ha Ha. |
| Morka11-29-05, 09:42 AM | Thanks. That's exactly what I was thinking too. The problem is my DM is biased against males playing females, because she says "I've never seen a male play a female as anything but a lesbian boink bunny!" I'll just have to make a good case for it. You could tell your DM your character took a vow of chastity, weither with the Exalted Feat or just with role-play. All your youth, you were told by your parents your were a beautiful girl; weither you accepted it was your path to be a "beautiful girl" or not, you knew you were a beautiful girl. Now you are ugly. In fact, some men could still find you attractive, but your scars are more in your soul than on your body; having a knife on your lump is a good sign of that. You could be a shy woman hiding behind your scars to not be approach by anyone, male or female; only your crocodile is allowed to provide you a bit of affection, for how loving a crocodile could be. Now, if someone tell you he could get rid of your scars and allow you to be beautiful, how will you react? You would still be a shy woman, but with nothing to hide behind... Do you think you would be able to play like that? If yes, present it to your DM. Ask her to give you a chance to play her for a few gaming sessions. If your PC is still a boink bunny, then tell your DM you are ready to play a male character instead. |
| SoulGamit11-29-05, 06:07 PM | Funny thing, regeneration allows for a fortitude save to negate it and spell resistence. Get a high fort save and/or spell resistence and your set. Now you have to ask why someone would ever want to resist being healed, the simple answer is that maybe your character wants those scars to remind her of why she hate mages and who she is. Another is, as said above, she's subconcously dependent upon them to hide herself. Your character doesn't even need to know she's making the fortitude save, really, it could be a subconcious thing. Of course... there's still the chance you'll fail the save, but it should be something at least. |

| Rolof11-30-05, 02:53 AM | No offense, but I tend to agree with your DM on the whole "lesbian boink bunny" thing (Laughed out loud at that one). That being said, I don't know you as a person, so maybe you indeed have the roleplaying skills to pull it off, I know that personally, I couldn't do it. Closest I ever get to using a female character is when I DM NPCs. I love the background story you've come up with though- you may know of it already, but there's a Prestige class you could take with this character that would fit great, it's the Bloodhound. They are the perfect class for being a bounty hunter, which is what you said you wanted to be. I think it's in Races of the Wild, but I'm not sure. |
