Sorry guys and gals, i know that this is the wrong place to chuck this thread.. but i always get the quickest and best responses here in the CD board.

My party (four 19th lvl and one 15th lvl) faced off against a Green dragon that was a CR35... :uh-huh:

Now... somehow we managed to beat the damn thing :OMG!

But were all trying to figure out how much experience were going to get, since the charts dont list things that far ahead.

Any help here would be great, were trying to figure out if the 15th lvl character should get more than the others... were stuck.

Chiers in advance.

Your DM's going to have to ad hoc it, I think, afaik there are no charts for encounters of that much difference.

Only if he didn't wet himself, you all were so far out of your league it's not like 4 levels made much difference. :P

Good job laying the smackdown on Godzilla, there, and good luck getting an appropriate reward from your DM.

Chiers Shaggy_Shaggs.

But what exact experience would you give the characters?

Thats what were having trouble with, none of us can come to a sound decision. We figured the most common answer that we get from these boards will most likely be the most correct.

So this is a call for help to all you dm's!!! What experience would you give to the characters for this win?

Well, you took on an epic encounter and won, perhaps the rather than handing out a specific amount of xp he should set each character's xp to 220,500 (halfway between lvl 21 and 22).

Was it somehow we won .... cause

1) all{most} of us rolled natural twenties repeatedly or at signifigant times { ie very lucky}

2) the dragon botched on one or more important rolls { ie the GM/dragon was very unlucky}

3) We {improvised} thought out and commited to a great plan that worked out very well

4) we attacked like raving madmen and fought our way through to a well deseerved win

If it was 3 or 4 then your characters deserve more credit - if it was 1 or 2 then expect less credit{experience}

I've never had players take down something of that level.

That said I've had low level players suprise me with a well thought out plan that not only allowed them to survive but also win against a signifigantly more powerful opponent. I was impressed with not only their plan but also their commitment to it - ie more than a few of the player characters nearly died meanwhile they were urging the others to keep to their own set tasks.

So quick question
Did your group have fore-knowledge that you would be meeting something of this nature before the encounter?

Ie was the epic level dragon a total suprise, only partial suprise, or not really a suprise?

Basically it was a combination of 2,3 and 4.

We had a plan... but that plan involved some of the part rushing the dragon like mad men (it also involved me, as the 15th lvl character, to make the dragon start the fight... pretty hard considering).

Finally... a few unlucky rolls for the dragon saved us... and actually ended up killing it.

Our fore knowlege of the beast was that it was uber powerfull, adventures more powerfull than us had tried and failed to kill it. But we really really needed this mirror that it had.. so we risked it.

Hope this helps.

Well since you had a plan {even if part of the plan was some of us attack like madmen} and you stuck to the plan then you definately deserve greater experience then if it was a combination of 1 & 2.

I'll be talking to a couple of rules lawyers I know soon and bring up your issue ... after they choke down the situation I'll see what we as a group come up with.

Oh last quick question - the 15th level character - is he the Orc general from your other thread?
Fithero

01-29-06, 08:23 PM
nar, that orc general is actually only 13th lvl, the 15th lvl character is a elven fighter who uses a spiked chain.

Not the most effective character against a dragon... but hey, he did his part.

there is a way to give the xp out corectly, look at the XP charts on page 38 in the DMG, theres a pattern in the XP table, for a given level two CR's in the left or right direction doubles the XP, so each of the 19th level chars get around 1843200XP and the 15th level person (howd he get so low?) should get 4608000XP. btw congrats on the XP and a good note for the DM no one encounter can bring you up more then one level says so somewhere in the DMG or PHB so now your 19th people are 1XP away from 21st level and your 15th is 1XP from 17th, but if I was DM for yall I would give you full XP.

I'd go with Psynaps on the rewards.
But enough about that.. I want to hear more about this truly epic battle.

Well.. this female green dragon had this mirror we needed to obtain to stop the apocalypse (well the current one any way :P)

My character (the 15th lvl elven fighter) was taunting her as she tried to enlist him, at this time she was in human form. Eventually i got sick of taunting her and attacked.... well tried to and she cut me down in the first round of combat.

Anyway i was dead and the party starts summoning creatures and throwing all kinds of spells at her (all the while trying to get past like 15 layers of magical defence. Eventually the only other fighter dies, and they get her down low enough so she teleports away.

The party casts revenance (i think) on me and the other fighter, letting us live for 19 minutes. My character being the brash fool that he is runs down a corridor, but she is actually right around the corner, fully healed, combat starts anew.

The other fighter and i, with only 18 minutes to live charge in like madmen and go all out and keep her occupied while the spell casters drop the rest of her defences then blast away at her again. Eventually she turned into her dragon shape and started beating me and the other fighter up, so we back away and start throwing these +2 bastard swords at her (picked a few up off her minions).

Eventually the wisards cast all their fingers of death at her, and she fails one of the saves (rolled a one).

So... seeing my life flash before my eyes... i decided to do what i threatened to do before i attacked her... dance on her corpse. (Scored a 56 on my Preform:Dance check aswell :P)

Anyway, the wizard teleported me and the other fighter to a temple of selune to have true res cast apon us... and thats it.

Whole battle took about 6 hours real time.... But it will be worth it when we finally decided how much exp we get.... oh god just thinking about it... hehe.... several levels are bound to flow my way : :dancin:

Ya gotta love it :P

Yeah but according to the rules you should have gotten just one level and 1 exp sort of your second level .... so you're coming out ahead ;)

Well, glad it turned out okay.

Obviously, the planned encounter was not that you would fight the epic-dragon. There was another way to get the mirror, and the dragon was more of an obstacle, than an opponent.

However, as most GMs will tell you, players don't get the write-up and can seriously fubar a well laid out adventure. :) I'm pretty amazed you all survived, to tell the truth, GM probably is too.

Soooooo, you should still only get the XP for the planned encounter (IE: what the EL was for avoiding her), even though you did it a different way and possibly made it much harder on yourselves.

IMO at any rate. The hardest part about killing a dragon: Figuring out how to loot the hoard before it gets looted by others.
Fithero

02-10-06, 12:55 PM
True that, and its made all the harder by the fact that this dragon actually has like 7 different lairs... each with their own treasure... but also with their own guardians.

Makes things kinda interesting :D

just do what i do.... if u cant make off with the vast trove of coins via bags of holding etc. take the gems and choice items and melt the rest into a giant solid mass then scavengers have to work damn hard to get any hopefully giving you time to organise for proper hoard removal (i use rent-a-wagon hoard removals).
