Okay, here's the basics. Max began as an Expert 2 specialized in Healing and Alchemy (he's a pharmacist) then something bad happened, and he decided to become a paladin and go hunt evil things/people and send them to their final judgement at the hands of Wee Jas/Kelevmor/Jergal, whomever.

Problem is: I want to play him with an 8 Wis. The character concept lends itself well to a Paladin who is not very introspective, perhaps a bit damaged upstairs. Definitely, his is disturbed by the horrible tragedy that sparked his transition into Paladinhood. This, of course, means NO SPELLS! What can I do to help this Paladin get by in the world without half of his normal class abilities?

Furthermore, I've never read anything about Wee Jas sponsoring Paladin orders. What suggestions does anyone have about a self-made Paladin?

Option the First

He's not really a paladin... he just thinks he is. The best way I can think of to simulate something like that would be take a level (maybe two) in sorcerer and then several in fighter. Since he is, as you put it damaged, then he would have little trouble convincing himself of his holy status.

Perhaps you can find some prestige class that might grant a Smite ability, or work out something with your DM to allow access to the Divine Grace class ability (or the infernal version available to Black Guards).

Option the Second

Take a handful of levels as paladin, then switch to another class. This can be problematic, since paladins loose a great deal of their powers if they change classes. A way to work around this is to look into the Complete Adventurer. That book provides some feats for combining the paladin class with a selected second class, and being able to combine certain abilities. (The only example I can think of right now is a feat for a monk/sorcerer character that allows the Charisma bonus to be added to AC, instead of the Wisdom bonus. The feat also allows the character to continue to advance as a monk even after taking levels of sorcerer.) I think there is an option for a paladin/ranger mix that allows the character to choose his special paladin mount as his animal companion and combine the two aspects. If there is an option for the paladin/sorcerer combo, then you may want to persue that route.

Option the Third

Let's say the bloke is completely delusional... not much of a stretch, I think. He can simply advance as a fighter and nothing more. It would be up to you to roleplay the delusion to the hilt so that he, and everyone he encounters, thinks he's a paladin.

Conclusion

Given enough time and resources, I'm sure you can come up with something that you will enjoy, and that doesn't totally gimp the character. In this case, don't feel afraid to Munchkinize the character so as to make up for the loss (i.e. option 2 could be the start of a Munchkin-type character).

But, no matter what you do, it will be a challenge to make the character work, both in practice, as well as in the roleplaying.

Well, you could take one of the paladin variants from a dragon mag (i forget the number) and if its Jergal, i think that would be the Lawfull neutral paladin variant...im not sure.

If your were going to take a spell caster and fighter and make him think he is a paladin then i think favoured soul and fighter would be better...but then you still have no spells. So perhaps sorcerer is better, just dont make his spells to flashy.

Finally...yeah just make him totally bonkers and think that he is smiting people, but really he is just using max power attack or something. I hate loonies.....
