...or something along those lines.

Our has a new campaign set in Freeport coming up that I've built a Fighter/Swordsage/Bloodclaw Master for. I decided before I even made the class choices I wanted him to be a fairly free spirited individual who lives for adventure, but knows the price has to be right. So he's not really greedy, but he knows money makes the world spin and spin. His martial maneuvers are pretty much explained through his adventures on the high seas, the places he's visited, and his lifestyle.

I'm just not sure how I should explain why he's doing what he's doing. I would like any ideas on maybe a reason why he's doing what he does, say from like growing up. Also since I as a player love Knowledge skills, this guy has interest in History and Religion, and walks around in a Monk's Outfit, which conceals his daggers in his sleeves. He won't really lie to people about what he is, but if confronted he might spout out religious stuff, since: one I dont think I'm playing him as much of a liar, and two game mechanics say he would suck (Cha 8, no ranks in any social skills).

As a young man you lived in a port town and heard stories from around the world. You lived for the day a foreigner would arrive and tell a new tale. The stories you had never heard were your daily bread and you would have it no other way.

It was from these stories that you learned the way of the world. You learned of the glories men would reach for in the name of their god and the depravities to which they would sink for the same. You learned that gold was the surest sign of success and that survival in the stories both relied upon and assured you of such.

And so as you grew you dreamed of your place in the stories. In time you learned the truth; that the stories were exagerations more often than not. Still by then you knew, just as surely, that all the stories held at least some grain of truth.

And when you reached sufficient age you sign on board a ship. By now you had heard all the local stories and investigated all the local legends. Time had come to find new legends to seek out, and new treasures to claim.

Heeeey, yeah that's simple enough. Not to convoluted and bogged down with details, and I can kind of make them up as the game goes on. I had kind of figured he'd had lived in a port town, but wasnt really sure to make his father a mercenary sailor, and I take after his father, or his father was something else and I just chose my path because of seeing how life was through an adventurous child in a port town. Your little description is pretty good. Thanks!
