I've recently started playing D&D and have begun to undergo the process of making my very own character, i was reading up on Trydan's "How to create a role-playing character" post (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=105563).

He suggested to start with a concept. We'll since im new at this could people give me some comments or suggestions on mine?

"(Insert name here) is a outgoing monk who has supressed many of his childhood memories and due to this has created a fictional past for himself."

Why is he outgoing? Does he enjoy social interaction? Is he naturally extroverted?
What was this childhood memory? Was it unpleasant? If so, why is he extroverted, rather than introverted?
What is this "fictional past"?

Then, carry on and start to explore more mechanical issues:

What stats would this affect (e.g. high CHA)?
Why would he take up adventuring?
What equipment would he have... and why?

So... good start. Keep at it.

You could play an elf. You know, elves don't sleep, but each night, they must spend 4 hours of meditation to make their memories in order and remember who they are.

Now, imagine that your elf monk forgot to sleep for a week, or a month. Or he could have been prevented to do so by some ennemy who captured him. Since this time, he could confond what he knows of his own past with many legends he heard.
