OK, so I've just started playing a monk, in a group of three (for the moment) players. We have a paladin, a cleric, a rouge/sorcerer and my character, the monk. I know that equals four characters, but we are going to take turns being the DM. I know many of these are already healers, and that the monk gains the selfhealing feat later (don't remember it's name right now) but I'd like him to be a bit more flesh and bone than the standard monk, wich I find a bit reclusive when it comes to roleplaying.

What I would like to do is get the character closer to an old kung fu cliche, the herbal doctor, with accupunture, potions and chi flow corrections. Think about Chow Yun-fat's character in the movie crouching tiger, hidden dragon. He is more than just a fighter, he is also a healer. Many eastern movies have this kind of character.

The Monk character is a good starting point for this, but I'm unsure where to go with it. The system seems to favor the monk as a fast fighter, a magebeater. But I'd rather have him be a more rounded character in combat, and I'd like to have a bit more to play on outside of combat.

Does anyone have any good tips for skills to choose?

I feel the Player guide and DM guide leave a lot to be desired in the form of options to create this character, and I'm thinking about creating/modifying what I have found already.

I'm thinking a good way to do this would be to make a Prestige class, where the character could gain some sort of chi flow skills/feats usable to help others defend against disease, wounds and maybe even mind spells.

Any tips, any pitfalls I should look out for are welcome!

Oh, and we are using 3.5 rules, with standard Players Handbook and DM guide.

The setting is not eastern, but seeing as the monk is an eastern character and is used in all settings anyway I don't see a problem with integration into the game setting.

Doctors treat patients with medicine, so to be the most like a real doctor in game, you'll have to more or less replace "medicine" with the word "potions," or maybe even scrolls, if you feel like putting ranks into using magical devices. In a fantasy setting, insta-healers are better than field medics in battle, but it doesn't hurt to have more healing ready. You could even have it as a profession, and with the high wisdom score of a monk it could be a quite lucrative business. :)

Monk1/Fighter4/Shou Disciple5/Red Avenger10.

You'll get a BAB of +16 or +17, Flurry with martial weapons, better HP than a straight monk, a few bonus feats, Weapon Specialisation, LOADS and LOADS of healing based off of you Wisdom score, so Wisdom would give better AC AND better healing... I think that with a 20 in wisdom, you can heal up to 1000 hp per day or something... It's a great healing class, and it's got a couple of half-decent attacks as well.

So all in all, your character will be better in combat than a straight monk, and you'll be a great healer as well.

Red avenger is from Sword and Fist.
