In a game I am DMing, one of my players wants to be an LE Monk. It sounds reasonable to me, as the guide says monks alignments have to be lawful, but not neccesarily neutral or good.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are the master of LE monks. We ended up betraying the party and beating up the halfling (ever so fun, try it some time). Aslo be sure to keep it in the city, the forest and the dungeons have no law.

Think Neverwinter Nights, Grimgnaw, monk of the Long Death.

Believes death is something sacred and to be shared with the world at every opportunity.

Monks of the Black Serpent.

Believe killing people is the path to perfection. Different forms of murder and intrigue are advanced steps on the path.

Any monk code that forces people to do evil acts actually counts. For example, a monk that believes that every creature should be strong enough to defend itself (pretty LN to me) can be evil if his beliefs also say that he has to test his own strength to defend himself against that of others at any reasonable chance he gets.

This doesn't have to mean he will kill anything, it could also mean that he will challenge strangers and, only if they accept the challenge, fight them to the death for no other reason as to proove his own strength and teach the soul of the deceased that he wasn't strong enough.

At least, that's how i'd design a LE monk.

Oh yea, forgot the nice character trait that he will never help someone in need. Because that will break his code. Although making a promise with his party that they will fight together always, will mean he is allowed to help them by his code. As they are then a fighting force and not a group of single entities.

a monk path doesn't have to be anything special.foot to face, fist to stomach, blah blah blah. just let him beat stuff up. :fight!:
however (evil devius smile slowly spreads across face) :evillaugh ... give him chances to change his ailienment constantly. save the small child/ damsel in distress.

Think of the Spanish Inquisition or even modern terrorist organizations or the darkest rumors about the CIA. They can do evil things out of a twisted sense of what's right for their community, or in God's eyes, or the greater good.

Perhaps it's their God's will that trandgressors or foreigners or monsters be ruthlessly hunted down - even tortured - for their sins. Perhaps an orc child is considered below human and the monk would inflict the worse possible tortures as a deterrent to other orcs or to extract information.

Just a perspective.

The Lawful restriction on monks is meant to reflect the discipline it takes to master martial arts. There's nothing inherently good about monks. Take any bad guy from a kung fu movie, and you have a LE Monk. An evil monk is just like an evil anything else, he just happens to be better at unarmed combat.

Not sure what help you actually want here - you don't have to do anything special to put an LE Monk into a game.
