| SweetZombieJesus12-18-06, 03:09 PM | In the backup adventure my group is playing, I am planning on going the mounted combat route. This of course implies Paladin and Cavalier. To be able to use mounted combat in the cramped dungeons we're likely going to get into, I was thinking I could be small. I'm thinking gnome. Gnome paladin, sounds like a pretty interesting hook. Any ideas for an interesting mount, other than the usual riding dog or warpony? Badger sprang to mind, but a mount who rages does not sound like something I want to get into. |
| TroubleWolf12-18-06, 05:01 PM | My all-time favorite is a cheetah. But my mounted character had Effective Druid Levels, not Paladin levels. I'm not even sure how you determine what animal a Paladin can have as a mount, to tell you the truth. But you just can't beat a cheetah mount. They're fast, they get Trip like a wolf, and they have claw attacks as well as a bite attack. |
| Apupunchau12-18-06, 05:38 PM | I like going Ranger or Druid and then Halfling Outrider and riding a wolf or a warthog into combat |
| theotherdraxen12-18-06, 06:39 PM | By RAW, can you have something other than a warpony? In any case, a badger would be frickin' sweet. |
| The_Third_Karsus12-18-06, 11:39 PM | May I suggest you riding a small bear like a panda bear? Or perhaps having a minimize+permanency spell combo. on an animal and Tada! There you have it any wonderful animal is now yours to ride! Or have an item that summons any small animal if you really feel indecisive. |

| evilgenius12-20-06, 08:28 PM | A normal Wolverine. It's the best you can get for a small character, but is particularly suited to a gnome. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/wolverine.htm It's medium size so a gnome can ride it. It's got a burrowing speed, so a gnome can talk to it. Plus, it's not afraid of underground like some critters would be. Cave in? no prob. As long as it's not solid rock, send the wolverine off to dig out. Even then, transmute rock to mud is a low level spell, and your wolverine can dig even a low level party out to safety. It's got a climb speed, so it can always take 10. A big wall in the way? No prob, send the medium size wolverine up with a rope for the small size character to go up afterwards. It's got scent and the tracking feat. That's worth it by itself! It can rage once per day if it's in sincere trouble (or the rider is in trouble)... It's not fast with a move of 30', but for all the other advantages, it's perfectly suited towards a gnome (who only moves at 20' anyways!!!). I've had a character concept for a chivalric gnome mounted on a wolverine for a long time, but I've never played the guy. |
| theotherdraxen12-22-06, 06:09 PM | That rage is dangerous. |
| SageBahamut12-22-06, 11:51 PM | Dire Weasel. ... Seriously. They're scareh. They deal CON Drain as an EX ability. |
| SweetZombieJesus12-28-06, 03:41 PM | Okay, after considering, I think I'm going for boar. I'll need ranks in craft (saddles), but it’s worth it. Rage is dangerous, and not in the good, "Top Gun" way. Don't want to be making ride checks all the time riding a raging animal. The Con Drain for the weasel is a damn good ability, but I lose mobility if it is used. Perhaps that's a good idea for an animal companion, but not so much for a mount. The boar moves at 40, and has the Ferocious ability, which keeps it up. As a house rule, my DM has you die at negative CON. At 17 for the boar, that's not too shabby. Other candidates I had were black bear (it is medium), the monitor lizard, and cheetah. In the end, it was the HP, ability and movement of the boar that made it come out on top. The Cheetah’s 500-foot charge once per day just didn't seem like it would be useful very often. |
| Devlonir12-29-06, 08:16 AM | There is of course also the option of the riding dinosaurs the savage Talenta Halfing Tribes use in Eberron. They ride a sort of Velociraptor most of the time. But well, a Paladin on a dinosaur... it's a longshot. |
| necrosnoop11012-29-06, 09:07 PM | Monstrous Spider, Medium? Giant Ant, Soldier? |
| Roscoe_Greenbottle12-31-06, 02:06 AM | But well, a Paladin on a dinosaur... it's a longshot. I'm a rouge on a dinosaur. If I can do it, anyone can! |
| Gopher01-01-07, 03:34 AM | I'm a rouge on a dinosaur. If I can do it, anyone can! That's right, if your make-up can ride a dinosaur, so can you! I'm sorry, it's just hard to resist those. |
