My 2E Wild Mage just got a shock! [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was playing a 2E game today, in which I play a Wild Mage (for those of you who don't know, a Wild Mage is a normal wizard who's spells sometimes surge into unforseen effects).

Anyways, I recently have found a list of 10,000 random magical effects on the Internet, and asked my DM if I could use it for my Wild Surges. He said "alright", so I printed off the dozen or more pages and brought them to game night.

I hadn't gotten a chance to use it until the very end of the game. My party was traveling to another country on a boat when it was attacked by dwarven pirates (I think they were dwarves). Their boat had a large steel spike on the front, made to ram other ships. I had to stop it somehow, since our ship could not get out of the way soon enough. So, I used a Reckless Dweomer spell (duplicates any spell known, but high chance of a wild surge) and got a wild surge.

So, I rolled d10000 (4d10, first is first digit, second is second digit, etc. Four 0's is 10000). I rolled 0, 4, 0, 7 for 0407. I was looking through the pages to see what happened when the DM asked to see the result first, which is perfectly reasonable. He scanned through until he found it, then a wide smile crossed his face. He asked to see my character sheet.

"Are you going to rip it up?" I asked.

He just took it and set it down behind his screen. "Kiss your character good-bye," he said.

He handed me the sheet with 0407 on it, and I scanned down the numbers. I burst out laughing. I handed it to another player (who was very drunk at the time), who squinted at it and almost coughed up a lung in laughter and astonishment. He handed it to the other player, who also followed suit.

The result of the single wild surge I had gotten the whole game was:

"Caster becomes a God; remove from game immediately."

My character, a paltry level 3 human wild mage, rose upon the wings of god-hood into the heavens, to take his place among the gods.

I had a 1 in 10000 chance of getting that result, and out of the only roll I made, I was that. We were all amazed, so amazed that we actually ended the game right there (also influenced by the fact that one player was exceedingly drunk).

That is my first character to become a god. And he was only level 3!

Well, there was a problem with that story or that ruling, because you should have gotten a roll of 0410 instead of 0407, adding in your level to the wild surge roll.

And I never trust net modifications for wild magic. They often are insane to say the least.

However, thinking about how in 2e I once surged on a fireball against a drow priestess, getting a result of 91 to have all her magical cloaks and clothing crumble to dust, then having to fall back on Nahal's Reckless Dweomer, getting a roll of 77 and a modified roll of 84, target falls madly in love with the caster...

Yeah, my DM banned me from ever using those particular percentiles in a game again after that. Still she made one great companion after she switched to a different god and atoned for her sins. :D

I wouldn't mind a really good 3e version of wild magic, though I KNOW balance would be a core problem of any such attempt. Maybe in Unearthed Arcana.

Actually, this list has slightly different rules for using the table. When you use Reckless Dweomer, you have a 10% chance per level (max 100%) - 5% per spell level to control the surge and use the spell normally. Otherwise, its a completely random surge.
I did it right, its just different rules for this list.
