Here are a few ideas I have used for characters in the past few years, feel free to criticize, steal, laugh, or sigh at them. :)

If you want more info on them, I would be happy to provide some.

1) Uwe (Human)
Uwe (Pronounced ew-vay) was (in this world's description) an African slave taken to Germany. When he was in his early 20's the world was overrun by the "vermin races" (orcs, goblins, etc) and he was freed by his masters. He was very intelligent so he learned magic underground (hiding from the vermin, as were most everyone else), and joined a group of adventurers as the wizard. He sacrificed himself saving the group during a climatic battle on a hill while armies of the vermin clashed with one of the few remaining "free" cities.
Best known for: Casting Shield and buffing others (Bull Strength, True Strike, etc).
Favorite Item: A simple wooden Staff.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Levels: 1-4 (All Wizard)
Ending: Died on the hill saving the party.

2) Xavon Calydon (Human)
Remember the armies clashing under the hill from #1, above? Xavon (prounced Zay-vaughn) was in the army of the free city and after that battle was won, he retired from military service. He sought out the heroes of the hill to thank them for their part in the battle and do a bit of hero worship. After meeting them, it was expressed that they were looking for a warrior to accompany them on their next adventure, since he was retired and they were famous, he joined them. During thier adventures together, they saved the universe, rescued his long thought dead "Alienist" father, and Xavon was married to a former travelling companion.
He was a follower of the god of luck "Calydion" (where he got his last name) and believed in random chance begin on his side.
Best known for: Preaching on the universal force known as luck, and reading his "bible", which contained rules for luck. Oh yeah, accidently killing 3 party members. *See below
Favorite Item: Other than his flaming greatsword, his armor "The Chains of Chance". **See below
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Levels: 4-9 (All Fighter)
Ending: Campaign ended.

3) Boaz (Human)
Boaz was the eldest of 8 siblings (the adventuring party) and a Paladin of the God of Love. Boaz saw his mission in life to spread the word of his god, and the legs of any willing lady, to attain that mission. Being incredibly pretty and self-centered, in every town, he would first request a hot bath and clean himself, change into his dress clothes and then proceed to look for the most beautiful maiden in the land. On the question of pregancies brought on by his activities, his response was that the lady should consider any child a gift from his god.
He always referred to himself in the 3rd person. "Hey Boaz, can you take 1st watch tonight?!" "Boaz would be overjoyed to stand guard this 'eve!"
Best known for: Bedding beatiful ladies, pampering himself with soap and pretty clothes, and talking about himself in the 3rd person.
Favorite Item: His um....you know. ;) And his pretty clothes.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Levels: 1-3 (All Paladin)
Ending: Campaign ended.

4) Welby Willoughbee (Halfling)
Welby was brought up in the land of the vermin armies (see #1 and #2) with his halfling village secluded from them. His father would occasionally travel out of the villages to trade with the peoples living underground. On one trip Welby was a stowaway, his father was assaulted and Welby was beaten to the edge of death by a couple of Goblins. Welby's father managed to make it to the caves where the people lived. Welby met an aged wizard who saw the ability in Welby to learn magic, and there he learned the benefits of magic. Magic doesn't care how big or small someone is. He specialized in Necromancy, promising to make the vermin fear him, and became fearless in the process.
Welby was also known to (unlike Boaz #3) not care what woman he might bed, and in one city even hired a half-orc prostitute to tend to his "needs".
Best known for: Casting Mage Armor, Burning Hands, and Fear based spells.
Favorite Item: His Spellbook.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Levels: 1-7 (All Wizard)
Ending: Died (don't remember how)

5) Whisper (Human)
Whisper was her nickname, the party never learned her true name. The last free city from the vermin armies (see above) learned the existance of another city that was not just determined to survive, but to attack the vermin at every turn. Whisper came from that city. A love for battle and a faith in the god of storms. She always spoke her mind, loved to drink, and loved to fight. At all times, she thanked her diety for the storm inside her, fueling her rage against the vermin.
Best known for: Fighting up front like a fighter, casting Inflict spells and being a badass.
Favorite Item: Her mace, armor, and faith.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Levels: 5-9 (All Cleric)
Ending: Died (falling to solve a puzzle animated a stone golem, multiple actually)

6) Lyricantilith (Lizardfolk)
Lyricantilith (pronounced: Lear-eh-can-teh-lith) was a eunuch guard for the lizardfolk princess. One night while he was on watch she disappeared. The elders believed her dead and for this he begged to be put to death for his failures. The elders, seeing the shame he had, banished him from their lands forever, to live with his guilt. Lyric (as he became to be known by his friends) travelled the land, like a ronin, looking to regain his honor, all the while believing that the princess was not killed that night.
He defended his lands on many occasion without breaching the borders, adhering to his banishment.
Best known for: Being quite around others, warbling around those he knew and trusted.
Favorite Item: His fists, and his portable hole.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Levels: 8-15 (All Monk)
Ending: Campaign ended.

6) Ilmenmenil (Elf)
Ilmenmenil (pronounced: Ill-men-men-el) was an elf from the northern lands. He found the love of his life, and set to marry her, only to have her die by a mysterious illness on their wedding day. It almost drove Ilmen mad. He fell into a deep depression and wandered the lands aimlessly, until an old woman fortune teller told him how he could gain the love of his life again. Ilmen followed her instructions to a far off land and summoned the spirit of his love through a mystical portal. As they began speaking of their love, a demon came through the gate and grabbed his love's spirit and began forcing it through the gate, back into oblivion. Ilmen attempted to destroy the gate with his sabre, leading to the gate exploding knocking him and the demon back, and closing the gate forever. Ilmen in a fit of rage (and fearing for his life) attacked the demon slaying it quickly, as his sword sparked and burst into flame as he attacked.
He has now come to realize that somehow his love's spirit and rage powers his sword. It talks to him in his dreams, and leads him on quests to try to unravel the mystery of her death.
Best known for: Speaking of his love and speaking his mind. After agreeing to help a diplomat to a meeting, the party wanted to make sure the negotiations went okay, Ilmen didn't care, as their mission was done. He wanted to move on.
Favorite Item: His love, his sword, his rage.
Alignment: Neutral Neutral
Levels: 7-12 (All Fighter)
Ending: Campaign ended.

This is a character I am working on now:
7) Unnamed-as-of-yet (Half-Elf)
A famed Human pirate was captured in the harbor of a secluded island of elves. He was sentanced to death. An elf diplomat confessed that she was his lover and was with child, and begged for his life to be spared. Over the next couple of month, she birthed a child (the character) and the elf council finally decided to release him, on the condition that he never return. He agreed and the lovers parted ways. That night the pirate kidnapped his own child from the diplomat and escaped. For the next 16 the child learned sailing, fighting, drinking, gambling, and wenching from his pirate family.
One day the ship was attacked by the military of the mainland and the ship was sunk. Being miles off shore, the character started to swim. He waited for words of other survivors, but none came. He headed off for his own adventures, always knowing that he wanted to return to visit his mother (who his father told him about).
Best known for: Humor, drinking, brawling, and wenching.
Favorite Item: Unknown as of this moment.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Levels: 1-? (Rogue for now, but planning on jumping Fighter and Rogue levels)
Ending: Waiting for it to start.

Xavon Note: *They seriously were not HIM doing the killing. You can say that his actions lead to the death of party members (all played by the same player too!):
1) The bard had climbed down into a cave to investigate, and was wrapped up by a cloaker. Xavon followed and saw this thing attacking his partymate and slew the creature, and in turn half the damage slew the bard.
2) Meeting up with a Halfling Rogue who was a natural at gambling (and Xavon was a huge believer in Luck) was a great beginning of a friendship. The two drank and gambled all the time. They came upon a wall in a cave which was about 10 feet high. Having no way to climb (as the was all perfectly smooth), Xavon lifted the Halfling up. Xavon put his hands up into the air above his head, with the halfling standing on top of them. The Giant on the other side thought it was awfully nice of me to give him such a great target for his pike.
3) We met up with a wizard who was fond of battle, and Xavon admired his courage. In a battle with Gibbering Mouthers, the mage went a bit crazy and stabbed Xavon with a dagger. Xavon in turn, knocked the mage out with a critical skull cracking punch. The Gibbering Mouther slimed over the mage, killing the 0 hit point target in one round.

Xavon Note: **The Chains Of Chance were an interesting creation of the DM. Basically it was a chain shirt +1, which always made its saving throw (not Xavon, the armor) and the DM said was indestructable. Once per day the wearer could invoke their power and roll a d6-1. The result was the armor's bonus for the next 10 rounds. Rolling 6s (meaning a +5) was great, but those 1s (meaning a +0) kind of stunk!
