My character was a paladin and now he's a psychopath...again [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey guys, I'm working on a rather bizarre situation for the "twist" that's been revealed for a character's background and I was curious if people could help me streamline it a bit. We're already well into epic levels and its a side problem of dozens of campaigns. I'll restrict it to the major bullet points and questions later after responses.

1. The character was at one point, a remarkably evil bloke who was violent and destructive after being traumatized by his sensei causing him to kill his wife in an illusion along with his son. He then promptly murdered everyone else in his home strahd style.

The character was "adopted" by two FR deities (shar and talos) and his service under them is undetailed but basically seems to have involved killing about 10,000 people over a period of ten years as an unstoppable killing machine (see 2# for part of the reason)

Though he's recanted, I'm interested in seeing how those two deities might inflict vengeance or their clergies think of him fondly or seek to corrupt/destroy him.

2. The character had a demon placed him at one point to feed off the destruction of the murder he caused and evil he performed. I'm not sure how powerful it should be or what sort of type it should be (unique?) but it in game was alot like the "Hunter" from Salvatore when it showed up.

Now that 3# has happened, I'm thinking it might awake and become a split personality but it might be better to use it as a seriously messed up bezerker like trait instead.

3. The character was a LG paladin of Tyr after Akadi seriously messed him over with a ghost rider "pain of his victims" assault followed by training in controlling his 'beast' and major geas when he killed one of Akadi's high priests. The character then had all of his ability to control himself and all his training ripped from him by an evil wizard recently.

I've thus far played it as bad attitude mixed with bloodlust and a love of battle but I'm interested in how to play such a traumatic change. I'm wondering how it might feel to be an exalted being of redemption then thrust back to square one.

(a player recommend Zhaan from Farscape but I'm not a fan so I don't know what he means)

some ideas on how to play such would be appreciated.

Also any godly reactions from Tyr since he's obviously incredibly unfit to be a paladin...I'm considering he was originally an anarchist too.

i guess if you don’t know farscape you could play him like wolverine from xmen. Although that’s more of a chaotic alignment maybe you could ask your dm if you can change your lawful to chaotic or neutral or whatnot depending on your actions. From the comic (not knowing to much) wolverine what as killing machine with out really a family, He killed allot of people. I’m pretty sure he hangs with the xmen because he feels that its the only way to gain back his humanity. this could be similar to your character. he hangs with the party because he feels they are helping him from doing evil acts. he wants to do good and through the majority of his actions he is but some times he is a little bit more crude then the rest. Maybe your dm could even allow your character to become neutral (good/evil) and half to fight from going evil again. maybe dying characters sets him into angry rages and he kills his foes were killing is not always the answer. he push everyone away but at the same time realize he needs them for their friendship. Also you half to tell any small kids who are infatuated with you to never fallow you and tell them to scram but really you like them your just afraid they will turn out to be like you.

I'm not afraid of losing my paladinhood over this. It's part of the story and I'm pretty sure the character can't maintain his lawful good alignment at this point.

(Shar: Ohhhh Yosho....how about becoming a blackguard!)

Definitely probably chaotic in alignment, probably neutral since his experiences HAVE changed him

well maybe you could ask your dm to allow you to change alignments for the sheer purpose of story and roll playing. If I was dm I would let you do what your doing as long as its not for power gaming purposes. I think theirs a chaotic good paladin in a dragon mag. Or was it unearthed arcane? I think theirs a neutral one too.

Edit: I am almost sure its in dragon mag 310. theirs a lot of paladin types in that one
