Im having huge problems sticking with one char... Developing it into something I actually wanna play over long time..

Mostly after every gaming session I start hating my char and start wanting to play something else... Ergo get my char killed and make a new one.

This is also frustrating for the others in the group and the DM.

Anyone know what my problem is? And what I can do about it?

(I do the same thing on Diabloish games and BaldurGatish games..
Play one hour and then start over...)

I have known other people with the same problem. Let me ask you a question: when you make a character do you make a detailed history? Do you take a long time to develop each character or simply provide a bunch of stats?

Personally I take a week or two to make each character, sometimes longer.

My answer would be that your interest in a character is proportional to how much you invest in making them. A 20 minute character is going to get old very, very quickly, while a character that you work on for a long time and genuinely want to play will last forever - and be a favourite for others in the group, too.

I've been working on a freeform character for 3 weeks now, working through various possibilities to find something I'd be perfectly happy to play for a long, long time.

Ok. So right now Im making my new Character, Elven Spellsword. The next session is on thursday I think. So I'll try what you say and use a long time, the time untill then, writing stuff about the character.

Is 100 things you should know about your character (http://www.geocities.com/poetess47/100questions.html) good help?

And thank you..

I sometimes have this problem as well, even when I create a fully detailed extensive background and everything. The biggest problem is that I want to play a lot of things. I want to play a barbarian, but I also want to play a divine caster. And of course a wizard. And I can have only 1 character!!!

However, while I have these feelings, I just try to roleplay my characters as well as I can, and if you stick with it for a short while it will change. Once your character has some nice achievement to his name and some goals yet to be accomplished, you'll start feeling the bond. And then you want the character to stay alive.

Also, really try to give the character a personality that you like.

Also, don't fall for "gimmicks" in character creation. In other words, don't base your character entirely around one detail that doesn't migrate well into other situations. If your defining character trait is that he loves his sword, for example, what are you going to do to keep yourself interested in your character when you're in diplomatic negotiations with the king? This is a pitfall that can often happen when you try to make a character after seeing something that's "OMG cool;" making characters based on characters in a cool movie / TV show / book whatever that you just saw is almost always a bad idea, as is making a character who's just designed to be a particular PrC. I've made this mistake before; when your character only fits in one small situation, you're just going to get bored with him and want to make a new one.

To work against this, try to think about how your character would react to a variety of different situations. What would he say? What would he be surprised by? What would he hate? Creating a well-rounded character is a good way to not become bored with him.

Something that might help you

perhaps you could not so much as change characters but change classes every level.

from paladin to fighter to ranger to barbarian to say something that way you could explore the different classes while at the same time you could role play the changes.

Perhaps schooled into a paladin order your character felt it too restrictive and embarked on the path to become a fighter, desilusioned with society and embracing nature he could later embrace the way of the ranger. and last he could give int o the rage and follow the path of the barbarian.

First off, let me say that I don't think that the advice that others have given you is wrong, not in the slightest. However, it doesn't as a rule work terribly well for me, and here's why.

I don't KNOW the character yet.

One thing that we would agree with is that the CHARACTER is more important than the numbers.

To that end. I have a set of questions that I answer in whatever detail I feel like at the moment. All are from the character's viewpoint. I'll include the example answers from one of my characters.

1. Who am I? (I am a dwarf from a remote mountainous region near the spine of the world, out in the world to answer the call of wanderlust in my heart before I settle down to embrace my duties and the bonds of clan and hearth.)

2. What is most notable about my appearance? (I have hair and beard the color of burnished copper, and clear grey eyes)

3. Who do I turn to for advice or answers? (Most of my wisdom derives from conversations with my father.)

4. Am I religious? (I am a devout follower of Moradin, and would like to be a priest)

5. To whom is my first loyalty? (Clan-Hearth-Hall)

As you can see just from these five questions, there's a pretty clear picture of WHO this character is, but no idea yet of who he will become. That part is yet to be written.

That's why I tend to shy away from ellaborate back stories right off the bat. I will often go in and fill in that information once I've worn a character for a while, but at the point of creation, I don't know them well enough for that yet.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

cmas.

who is your char in the world? why is he in the party? Does he help the party? and most important imagine this character is you. You wouldn't want to die neither should your character. To truly enjoy your character you must want to play that character as is and not look at what you can't and find yourself making a character that can do those only to find new weaknesses.
YOU MUST WANT TO BE YOUR CHARACTER AND CARE ABOUT IT OTHERWISE YOU ARE JUST A BUNCH OF STATS AND SKILLS!!!!
