I am playing a drow wizard in an evil drow campaign. My problem is, due to my shortcomings as a roleplayer, that I have a problem with playing evil. I have written N on his alignment and my excuse has been that he has dedicated himself mostly to knowledge and studying the art and isn't really interestet in making an effort towards "being evil".

I tok some inspiration from the description of Semmemon in the "AD&D Villains Lorebook".

To those who know more about the drow than I do. Are there any possible way for me not to be 100% corrupted and evil or is it poor roleplaying not to enjoy torturing babies? I have read a little bit about the drow in the Dark Elf Trilogy, but we never get any reason for Drizzt's Good alignment while he is in the underdark. Except for some innate knowledge that all the values he is constantly bombarded with are plain wrong.

any comments, anyone...

As I see it, evil does not have to be pure evil. In fact, in most of its forms, it's not. From a simple biological viewpoint, I think it is certainly possible for a Drow not to enjoy all that other Drow might do. It's not poor roleplaying not to enjoy torturing babies. The character is yours to do what you will with. You don't have to always agree with your party. The fact that you're simply not always in agreement with the party doesn't mean you're lacking in roleplaying skills. Just be careful that you don't act too good too often, otherwise your DM might feel compelled to change your alignment. Hope this helps.

Another option may be that he's "all talk no action". In drow society, one must keep up appearances or be consumed (especally if you're a male). He may be so interested in magic perhaps because he hopes through magic he may find solitude one day, away from the whipping, chattering females and their wasteful goddess. Until he can make it out to be alone, he knows he should keep a facade up: go to the temple rites, talk about the joy of slaughter, make motions as if you are as dangerous a creature as your drow fellows. When it comes down to it though, you just want to make sure you, your research & spellbook, and perhaps those who have assisted you in the past are safe; everyone else can rot in the demonwebs they love so dear. You feel that the logic of magic is superior to the mindless worship of Lloth, but you would never dare to actually say such a thing.

Read Dissoulution from the War of the Spider Queen series. It gives the best view on drow society, far and away better than RAS's treatment.
