| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi12-13-05, 06:35 PM | So I'm playing an intelligent Drakestone Golem. Probably an Incarnate golem. Can't say for sure yet. He was made with the specific purpose of guarding four legendary suits of Dragoncraft armor - one Silver, one Brass, one Bronze, and one Copper. Those dragons had been in a team of five against a world-shaking evil (what kind? I dunno.) The fifth member was a great wyrm Gold dragon. This dragon's soul was preserved, used to animate the Drakestone Golem that guarded the other four. There's his background story. An eon later, he's served his purpose. The armors have found their chosen matches - reincarnations of the four. Now what? The Drakestone Golem is adventuring on his own. But I don't know his personality. What kind of worldview comes from serving for hundreds of years, standing still as a statue, waiting and watching? Can't be true Neutral, since he's devoted to good. Neutral good? But what I really want to know is the kind of person he is, not his alignment. Is he like a stiff librarian, a loremaster of sorts? What character class would he take? And what do people call him? I know it's a given name. The wearer of the Bronze armor (one a seafaring swashbuckler with a show-offy sense of humor) had given the name. Not Rocky. Too cheesy. But something of that sort - more like what you'd give to a pet if it were a Drakestone Golem. In summary, what does my PC do? (Class, Skills, personality? Alignment's Neutral Good.) |
| Jon of the North12-13-05, 09:24 PM | Don't know much about Drakestone Golems, so take with grain of salt. Very tidy. Spent eon in same place, keeping everything in place. Could he be Paladin? Oh, sorry NG, right. Scratch Paly. Needs to relearn about world, things have changed, very intrested in new tech. Believes Kolbolts can be turned to good. Skills, Craft: armor, spot, listen. Name, name, what is a name? A rose smells as sweet by any name. Drake? Goldie? Sir? Eban, Alan, Balin? |
| Pan_Ai_Khan12-14-05, 08:59 AM | Several drastically different role-playing opportunities spring to mind. 1) The Golem has the inquisitive nature of a child, wanting to find out everything about everything. In this instance I'd suggest the Bard or Rogue Class unless that is prohibited by the alignment (can't remember). 2) The Golem has little or no interest in anything unless directed. This would best suit being a Fighter (Army type, used to following orders). 3) The Golem has spent his time while guarding the armour analyzing it, and now wants to learn about Magic. (Good excuse to play a Spellcaster). |
| DireHawk12-14-05, 02:18 PM | This is my first time posting here, but this, my friend, is RP GOLD! You have no idea what you're sitting on my friend. For one, even though dragons naturally live very long lives and much of that time alone, I don't think any dragon has ever had to experience this before. The magics animating him and keeping him within the golem, combined with the massive amount of time alone may have driven him slightly mad. This could be little quirks, or massive personality disorders. He may even have spent much of the time questioning his purpose, and why exactly he does it. Maybe he's come to the conclussion that things such as good and evil don't exist, or if they do, his sacrifice for the cause of good was not worth it. He may feel he's entitled to a great deal, or he may even have grew a great deal of hatred and self-loathing in his heart, leading him to become evil (and also a great plot device for the new evil which the other four reincarnated dragons must rise against.) Maybe in doing that last thing, the four dragons believe the shell their gold friend is captured in has corrupted his spirit, and the only way to bring their friend back is to free the spirit. If they do this, it may even become a greater shock to know that their friend was not corrupted by his shell, but has willingly made this choice (reminds my of Rhinox / Tankor during the Beast Machines series). At any rate, I see such a character as being a bit off their rocker. To not only have no personal contact, no intellectual stimulation, and all of this without even having their own body... it just seems a bit much for anyone to handle without some serious damage to their psyche. He may have even completely forgotten his name, his origins, his entire identity. He could be an easily molded puppet, much like Captain Marvel in the Kingdom Come graphic novel. Maybe a few people know this, and are racing for the chance to manipulate this blank slate of tremendous power toward their own desires. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi12-14-05, 06:24 PM | Thanks. And just to clarify, he's definitely forgotten his old identity. But the four reincarnated dragons have already defeated the evil. That saga is "done" (to be precise, I'm not ready to create that campaign). Now Drake/Gol/whatever has finished his purpose (and in the process discovered who he was - not necessarily reverting back to his old self). Now he needs a new purpose. I think I like Bard (and he's not Lawful like a Gold dragon anymore, so it's ok). Considering it all, he'll have stories to tell. He was part of two great conflicts - even if he can't recall one. And with hundreds of years standing guard, I'd say he's had practice telling stories, even if just to the statues and trees (might that lead him to slightly Druid tendencies?) And how's Gol for a name (short for "the Golem)? Meh, it'll do if nothing better comes up. And thanks. Glad to know I've RPing gold (as a once Gold dragon). Feel free to copy. And as a Drakestone, he's got Petrifying Breath. Forget the Fire Breath of a Gold, this rocks! (Pun not intended). |
| Card_Wizard12-14-05, 07:38 PM | Maybe you could play him like Data from Star Trek, The Next Generation? A great and knoweldgeable mind in his field (In this case, magical armors and the timeline he was created in) but in need of some education in other fields of life (relations, new magics and such) Just a suggestion. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi12-14-05, 10:24 PM | Several drastically different role-playing opportunities spring to mind. 1) Yup, I'm thinking Bard. Druid may be too powerful, though it'd make sense if he tried passing time talking to the local flora and fauna, when not standing still and growing moss. 2) Makes perfect sense. That was the only thing I'd come up with, though for different reasons: He was made to protect the armor, nothing else. Therefore he's had centuries of practice of just observing. Wait for when the reincarnations are sent. For prophecy speaks of their return. Better not interfere. Just keep the armor safe. Secret is a main part of that. So even when the land went down the tubes, he had to just watch and wait. Action violated his prime directive. Thing is, he's fullfilled his prime directive. No orders left to follow. |
| Kibbo12-16-05, 01:28 PM | May I ask why are you so set on Neutral Good? Standing for eons, out of a sense of loyalty to a "Prime Directive" seems more like lawful than good to me. Of course, you may be good as well. Unless the Neutral thing is a part of his reaction to sudden freedom: he is keeping his options open, exploring what may be in his new life. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi12-16-05, 06:48 PM | That works. Anyway, his devotion to the cause was more good than law. Prophecies spoke of the need for the return of the dragons, so he felt bound to ensure they could. Who else would be equipped for that purpose? Besides, it's not like Law serves him particularly well. He'll concede that it has its strengths (he'd lived by them for ages), but it doesn't make exceptions. To put it this way: lawful nature kept him duty-bound to his post. He'd rather not do that again. Especially when doing so forces him to ignore some immediate wrongs. (Waiting for the heroes, not becoming one himself). And now that he's without a post, he feels lost. He lived by order, and now he must create his own. After some time, he decided to try something more relaxed. I can just imagine him entering a city (a nice change from the woodland temple he stayed by for nearly a thousand years). Exploring some museum, he discovers a mirror. Never having seen one before, he jumps into fighting position. Masterfully-placed hinges swing, and someone else would have discovered three mirrors. This guy sees portals opening, each with a Drakestone Golem ready to attack from. So yeah, he's like a tourist. Both to the world and the concept of not following order to the ends of the earth. But what's his name? Gol? Drake? Dee? Rocky? the Stone? Mossy (from being outside so long, and moving so little) I'm sure that he once objected to the name - he was rather conservative. Symbolically, accepting the nickname marks when he went from Lawful Good to Neutral Good. BUT WHAT IS HIS NAME? Help. |
| shadowsofwhite12-17-05, 09:58 PM | "Moss" sounds good. that's all I I have to say. |
| Harrow Blade12-18-05, 08:26 AM | As for a name perhaps Drakol (pronounced Drey-cole) I would suspect that having spent eons simply watching that your character would have a distorted view of time compared to most other characters. For example you wouldn't think twice about sitting out side a cave for several months waiting for the hibernating bear to leave or if some one is seeking to destroy you, it would not be a hassle to go to ground for 50 years while you wait for them to die.One the same point you would be fascinated / puzzled by the other races need to hurry everywhere and thier obsession with imortality. I suspect that freedom from duty is a new and alien concept for your character which may hold some measure of fear for you. As such you could end up seeking some sort of replacement duty as a means of reinstating the comfort of such duty. I think the key to this character is to realise that EVERYTHING is alien, as a construct there was no childhood and so children and the whole concept of reproduction growth holds a measure of mystery. You may want to spend a week watching the grass grow simply for the pleasure of it. Think about what you had, did for thousands of years and then how different things are now you are free of your duty. And remember, as a construct your thinking is shaped by the rules, intelligence and personality of your creator. Just a few more ideas to add to the pot. Harrow Blade |
| DwarvinJedi12-19-05, 12:31 AM | Maybe he hasn't really heard his name in a while so he has forgotten it, thus he will just pick up on what the PCs call him. I like this character, sounds fun. |

I like this character, sounds fun. Thanks. And yes, he has forgotten his real name. I'm asking for what he'd be called. As is, top names: 1) Moss 2) Dreycole 3) Gol 4) Stone 5) Drake 6) Rocky |
| Lycanthromancer12-19-05, 09:42 PM | Like the idea - it's got potential. As far as the name goes, I have an idea. Have him choose a word from a language that he does not know - say, Ancient Elven or High-Celestial (preferably a dead language that is not easy to translate) - that he likes the sound of. He takes it for himself, only realizing later that it means something completely unlike what he thought it was (Should it be humorous? Deeply meaningful? Prophetic? Make a deal with the DM...). Whatever happens, his discovering what his name means could be a very memorable event, especially if there is a prophecy or even an entire prophetic cycle about "The one who is lost, and finds himself." This could end up being a very epic story... Naming examples might be: Elde'Qor Devrin-Ba'el Cho Vri'in Vasha Sy Drizzt ( :D ) Davram Mora Du'Chai Vrylenqor Make it as exotic-sounding as possible without going overboard. Good luck! |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi12-21-05, 10:04 PM | And it looks like I'm going with a Bard. Names: 1) Arezam (It's become my default fantasy name - not yet used in DnD. Maybe it translates "Stone Phoenix") 2) Orayeth (again, possibly to translate "Stone Phoenix") 3) Moss My brother (not on the forum yet) suggested Cobblestone. Sounds more like a Dwarf to me. And I think he's a Sacred Guardian. I found out about it here (http://sulerin.com/creatures/creatures.asp?op=open&a=20040610123135), and it's from the Bestiary of Krynn. Sounds perfect for the guy: made to guard a temple (to guard a 4 VERY important items). Not quite as much divine, but given the importance, Bahamut and maybe even Io would really care about their safety. In which case, maybe Orayeth (sounds good, huh?) eventually earns a favor: to be true dragon again. I mean if Bahamut could make the Spiked Felldrakes, couldn't he (and especially Io) make him the first of the Drakestone Dragons? |
| Archangel6212-22-05, 03:31 AM | Well, the idea of an artificer might also be somewhat logical, wanting to study the process that led to his animation and all... Perhaps the name should be something that he chose for himself, a small glimpse of his past that still flickers in his mind as he thinks. Sentinel Horde Glitter Soulstone |
| savant_warlord1312-24-05, 12:47 PM | New players (like you) should start off with a nice, simple race. Something like a human or a dwarf. Incarnate golems are something for people who have been playing for years |

| Puritan1312-25-05, 08:10 AM | He's depressed first off. His great function, his reason for existing, is gone. He had great faith, almost a religion, concerning the suits of armor he protected, now that his 'Armageddon' has come and gone, his religion is over. Whats more, the world is the same as before. Good hasn't ultimately triumphed over evil. Thats enough to make anyone very depressed for a good long time, at least until they discover they can take on a new purpose. Like guarding the life of his companions. He might be extremely happy, almost maniacally so, for the time in which he is fulfilling his new purpose. But then that purpose ends, his companions ultimately die or move on, and he's left with nothing again. He's bi-polar. His mood swings just take decades (sometimes centuries if his companions are elves) to swing. Hope I helped. I really like your backstory and hope you really enjoy the game. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi12-27-05, 02:29 PM | When did he/she say that he/she is a new player? It's in my sig. And thanks everyone for your help. These are some great tips. And I probably will wait a little while to get the hang of RPing before I try out this guy. But advanced research never hurts. |
| daiklaive claw12-28-05, 03:24 PM | how about Goliath? thinking about the old cartoon Gargolyes, he's spent his life defending something, now he needs a new purpose. maybe he seeks out something new worth protecting. he's a defender. he is cautious, but curious about the big wide world. ever see a kitten discover something new? hunkers down and stares at it wide eyed, goes rigid if the thing does something unexpected. "sniff" it tentatively, etc. he handles mortals carefully, affraid to accidently squish them. some comedy can come from him accidentally breaking things until he gets a better handle on how strong things in the outside world are built. if he has a sense of humor it is either dry or quirky, or both. he laughs at in jokes that only he gets and doesn't get any pop-culture references that the other PCs get, at least initially. he may have a tendency to talk to himself like Megatron from Beastwars ("No. a barganing chip must remain in play until the game is over. yes." "i don't think that his plan will work. no, i don't think so at all.") but not like smeagol/gollum as he is not suffering from MPD. if he's studying magic, maybe he wants to learn how to make other golems, so he can be a daddy! of course the other way you can go is... BENDER from futurama! he's given up the best years of existence to fulfill a prophecy and he doesn't even get a new paint job for his trouble, "no thanks for the golem, eh? then i'll get my own prophecy! with blackjack! and hookers!" so after being the devout follower and guardian, now he's out to find what's in this world for him... bender! swear, curse, be a curmudgeon. take shiny things cos you helped save the world darn it! you deserve something sweet. always help a friend, but complain that they are more trouble than there worth. let your soft sensitive side shine thru when it's funny. i'd think it'd be fun to have a golem rogue. rich man "when did i get that statue?" servant "yesterday, milord." rich man "and what happened to all of my firewine?" statue "burp!" richman "did that statue just burp?" statue "no. shut up and keep walking!" |
