| Cozmo01-09-04, 10:28 AM | I need help with my wizard's background. I have a set of skills and a personality for him but I can't seem to think of a background that would result in his character. His name is Talon. I got the inspiration for him from watching "Seinfeld" of all things. I thought that Elaine's boss, Mr. Peterman had a funny personality. And then I thought, wouldn't it be interesting to play a Wizard that was a true man of action and a little too over dramatic at times. "George! My God man! Can't you see that man's life is endanger! Quick give me you ATM code!" "Hurry Elaine, we're off to the archives!" That last comment really triggered the idea. I could see a wizard saying that. I want him to have standard Wizard skills and a couple of Rogue skills as well, to reflect his being a man of action. Maybe Forgery and Ventriliguism. And Juggling. I am having trouble though reconciling his being like this instead of the "studious. mercurial" type. I don't want him to be an orphan. Done too much. I want him to have a Mom and Dad that he frequently refers to. Any help would be appreciated. I need it. |
| Kickbutt_nancy01-09-04, 03:13 PM | Perhaps he's the son of very rich nobles, and he's trying to make a name for himself other than so & so's son. I'm assuming he has a big ego? |
| WarDragon01-09-04, 03:21 PM | Going precisely the opposite way of KN, perhaps he's a self-made man? The son of commoners who was brought up knowing the value of hard work, and was later "discovered" by a famous wizard and became his apprentice. Just because he can make things happen now with a few funny words and gestures, he sees no reason to dispense with Mom and Dad's values. Oh, speaking of his spellcasting, it goes without saying that his somatic components needd to be very flamboyant. |
| Simi01-09-04, 03:52 PM | He could have loved reading adventure books of some sort when he was a child learning wizardry. He kept his intrest in wizardry but also a flare for adventure. |
| Cozmo01-09-04, 04:07 PM | I wouldn't say that his ego is all that big but it is pretty healthy Thank you for the suggestions so far. I am still working on him. Yes, he is going to be a bit on the dramatic and flamboyant side. Almost too the point that he uses somatic or verbal components even when they are needed. |
| Malavus01-10-04, 05:21 PM | One good way to give this character the skills you speak of along with the flambouyance that will shape his personality is to give him a level or 2 of Bard. This works nicely with the suggestion posted earlier that the character might have enjoyed reading adventure books. Perhaps his family that he loves so much is from a troupe of entertainers, with his Mother and Father being spectacular performers. His penchant for flash and flair come naturally, and he often bases his own performances on those of his Father, perhaps even quoting him on occassion. He sees everything as a performance, and always acts larger than life. His exclamations and animated movements are often funny, sometimes dramatic. But he is ALWAYS on stage. Hope this helps. |
| Bromabaz Silvertwister01-13-04, 02:07 AM | Maybe his father was a wizard's wizard. A long bearded, moldy fuddy duddy who hated to see anykind of hijinks or tomfoolery. He began to train his son in the ways of wizards, but little Timmy wasn't that intrested in his father's stuffy old spellbooks and raggy pointed shoes. He wanted to become something more. One day, while searching through an old celler, he came across an old painting. It was a protrait of a man, maybe in his late forties, wearing a garish yellow robe with bells on the sleeves. He was leaning on an oversized parchment roll like a cane and and was juggling small balls of fire in his free hand. "Who can this be?" Little Timmy wondered, taking the painting with him toward the drawing room. He showed it to his mother, an aging old rogue of a woman with a twinkle in her deep green eyes. "Why. this is your grandfather Corrin!" she exclaimed. "One of the best wizards in the eastern West!" "This was a wizard?" little timmy excliamed, "Why, he's nothing like father at all!" "Not all wizards are stuffy old men like your father...." |

He's got high INT, low WIS, high CHA, and all the obvious RP consequences thereof, as well as a few points in diplomacy (seems more straightforward than taking something like Perform(Public Speaking) or the like, and more useful as well). A young boy in a farming village, he happened to meet a wizard who recognized his potential, and he traveled enthusiastically to, IMC, Harry Potterville (Not its real name). There he is a very successful (for his age) young wizard, as well as a politician of sorts (having a relative knack for public speaking compared to most wizards). His "real" job is crafting (very) minor wondrous items (not to use the 'game mechanic' name for it, but what better description is there?). But of course he is still a young boy at heart, and wishes to see still more of the world, given a chance, and he has no worries about leaving his wife and three-year-old at home for awhile. |
