I've recently joined a game of level 8 characters, and they let me start off at their level. The following brief overview is for this character (i have problems with thinking up names):

I was born and trained in castle lightforge, a castle on the border of human and dwarven countries. In this city many powerful weapons and items were created. My Parents, a scribe and an alchemist, soon saw the powers within me and using quite a few favors made me meet master.
I Was trained by the towns archmage, A Dwarf. He taught me the secrets of creating items of all sorts, of spell theory, and of living a happy life. He has shown me all the spells I know. He and I had learned together until I was 39, and he left on some urgent call.
Next year I died, when Castle Lightforge fell. It was attacked by a powerful sorcercer whose name is unkown.
I went to Celestia, but was so vengeful that I made a deal with Nerull: I could go back to the material Plane in my body, however I have 3 years or until my enemy is killed. After that, my soul belongs to him.
During this time he gained power and has ended up in the current group of adventurers. He and the Cleric of the group are in love.

The DM has told me that in the end, I'd end up fighting the sorcercer alone. After defeating him in an epic battle, I somehow manage to survive. Nerull, oddly enough tells me I have one day to say goodbye.

A good song for getting the feeling is Save Tonight by Eagle Eye Cherry.

What do you guys think? It is my first developed character, and I wish to improve it.

How could he meet Nerull in Celestia? Why couldn't he make his deal with Moradin, Pelor or another good deity? At worse, I would go with Wee-Jas...

Good deities don't send people back to take revenge (at least not according to real religeous believes).

It's a typical story done many times before in movies and books where a mortal cuts a deal with an evil God at the price of his soul. The first thing that pops into my mind is the Scorpion King from the Mummy II, at the moment of his death in return for his soul he is granted the power to destroy his enemies.
Your character, consumed by hate migth have become somewhat of an issue among the Gods. Does his soul belong to the good gods he worshipped in life and is he to be rewarded for his good deeds or does his hate prevent such an end and does he now walk the fine line between good and evil.
His extra days granted as a mortal might be a test, a trick to trap his soul forever in the abyss. He might not know it but he is not lost yet, his faith is still in his own hands and he has 3 years to make up for it or his soul is lost forever.

Good thing you don't play in my campaign world. Your soul would be trapped in Dollurh lost in apathy with no Gods to scream to as serves you well :)

How about:

Before his soul got to its proper destination, a devil "heard" the characters anger and want for vengence echo through the planes...

This devil made the deal allowing the character to go back but at the cost of your soul "swapping" with the devil once you die, so the characters body becomes owned by the devil...

how about he is constantly geased, that he has to do guests for the demon constantly, one gease is completed... another one completes. Gradually over time the character would become more and more evil (since the required quests would become increasingly vile) and if he doesnt finish his own personal quest in time (that of getting revenge) he probably wont even care about it any more. Thus he will pretty much end up having sided with a devil for no reason at all.

This path would allow you to play the character for more than 3 game years... who knows how quickly time can pass in d&d... hell on of my characters aged 10 years in one game session.... that was pretty nasty.

Anyway, hope this helps.

yeah I read a story like that once in a Forgotten Realms Novel. Curse of the ShadowKing I think it was were a Wizard made a deal with a ghost. The Ghost would provide information so the Wizard could save his best friend and in return after his friend was save the Wizard would die and the Ghost would take possession of his body, enjoying life once more.

It's a good evil plot, a ticket to the material plane for a lower level demon/devil who doesn't possess the ability of planer travel.
