| Mysk03-12-06, 02:13 PM | Alright in a campaign that i'm going to be starting up shortly. it will be based around the story of Dragon Quest VIII in the game... The party antagonist is the "Jester", Dhoulmagus. He takes a scepter of great power from a castle and runs rampant across the world slaying seemingly random people. I absolutely love the game's story. However. I do not love the name Dhoulmagus... It just doesn't... roll of the tongue or fit very well, as I want the party to hate the character that dhoulmagus is. not the yuck of his name everytime I say it. So I would like suggestions for an adequate name to replace this... odd one. So any evil jesterly names out there? |
| Dipteran_Legacy03-12-06, 03:25 PM | you could always name him kefka :) or just Rhapthorne :D really though, ....I dont have anything :( the one thing I always wished DQ8 had done, though, is go slightly more into who dhoulmagus was before he got offed. if you do one thing, I'd suggest doing that, maybe make him almost a slightly tragic figure-I know I felt sorry for the guy, by the time you kill him |
| Mysk03-12-06, 03:31 PM | Yeah. I felt myself wanting to know a little bit more about Dhoulmagus himself before he got the staff and went all possessed. As a DM i'll be able to create a bit of it myself. But I the main villain that the party will percieve for their entire quest will be Dhoulmagus... Not the staff until it's too late... That will probably throw them for a loop. *Knows they haven't played the game* But I am pouring over random sources and I still can't find anything i'm satisfied with for a name change. =( I may leave it as Dhoulmagus, that will give him enough of a tragic oomph as is... =/ |

It seems to me that you left with two options. Either (i) use the comical name that he had in pursuit of his jester profession or (ii) use a more traditional name. which do you prefer. "Jesterish" names, historically speaking, that could easily be adapted for NPCs include: Bobo (which is Spanish for "jester"), Kleftwitz, Hanswurst, Hofnarr or Gaukler (German names associated with juggers and jesters), Gleek, Gleekman or Gligman (medieval English term for a jester) Jack Pudding, Merry Andrew and Punch (later English names for jesters) Wamba--the jester to King John in Ivanhoe Sir Dagonnet--legendary jester to King Arthur Archibald Armstrong--famous (real world) jester to King James I Muckle John--jester to Charles I Nigel Roder--the current official royal court jester of the British monarchy (there's some trivia for you) Many many shakespearean jesters, including Touchstone in As You Like It Trinculo in The Tempest Feste in Twelfth Night Launcelot Gobbo in The Merchant of Venice Yorick (deceased) in Hamlet Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing Edit: Looking up "Nigel Roder" it appears that he has adopted the working name of "Kester the Jester," and he's the pro. I suppose "Molester the Jester" was deemed too riské. |
