| camirblu04-04-06, 09:40 AM | Hey there! I'm playing a gnoll warsinger/trumpeter, and seem to have found myself somewhat stuck. Or, at the least, looking for direction for roleplaying this PC. The situation: This campaign group tends to play more highly social characters with a mix of social and combat. Ergo, this PC needs to be able to interact. "Loner" types do not play well, here, nor do I particularly enjoy them! My trouble is finding ways to play this PC from a more social angle when they're not in the middle of combat. The character: This PC is a NE gnoll warsinger (bard + barbarian) who follows a campaign-specific totemic faith, Worg of the Barrens. Worg's in-game summary is: A violent, cunning creature that allies itself to many goblinfolk, the Worg of the Barrens is feared as a rapacious killer with formidable strength. It is a spirit less revered than feared, for it stalks the periphery of the tribes, eager to pick off the weak and the infirm. Like Crow of the Pyre, it has no sense of honor or virtue, and just as easily tears through a warrior in his prime as it does an emaciated elder. Worg is worshipped by few tribes in territories far apart because its love for depradations and destruction can quickly decimate populations of animals, beasts and even enemies. Yet, it is a creature fiercesome in battle but dedicated only to its own satisfaction. The events shaping the character (short background): Character came from a warlike tribe on the edge of extinction. A highly charismatic leader rose up from the ranks, taught them some measure of cooperation behind the ferocity. He helped establish rituals to the spirits as a means of re-establishing their cooperation. The sacrifice of enemies was ritualized, for instance, lending it structure (before this, the gnolls had been more chaotic). This also made it happen less, and placed greater emphasis on the purpose of it, itself, and gave the shamans (who tended to be smarter than the average warrior) a stronger role in the tribe. In effect, he helped shift things from Chaotic to Neutral. This leader also encouraged the bards to sing histories to bring a sense of pride and "place" to the tribe. Under his leadership they move from near-starving to fat and healthy. Then, leader gets old, gets ousted, character leaves tribe because she was one of his remaining supporters. Character heads southward after hearing rumors from one of the shamans of his spirit being reborn somewhere inside of a child. Wants to find child and support it when it comes of age. She meets the tribe this child is supposedly to be born to, and makes friends, but since they're more lawful and her faith is more chaotic, she remains on the fringes, though civil. This is where the campaign picks up. :) So, I've set myself up with this snarly warsinger from the mountains, who has a goal, a purpose...and I have no idea how to play her while keeping her evil and under-the-skin scary (Worg is not the prancing unicorn, but on the other hand this PC has learned not to be the ravening beast). Quirks, style of speaking, mannerism ideas, ways to bring in a more social aspect, all would help. :) I don't want to end up being the one to stall the group. Also, for what it's worth, the character's name means "beautiful" in certain languages. Irony or meaningful, I was amused. |
