Here's the situation: I'm playing an archivist...and things aren't looking so good after a bad encounter. I'm down to using a dagger, no spells, and down to 20 HP. A couple of lucky shots later, and I'm at -2 .The party wins the encounter though, and I survive. However, I stabilize at -9. I consider that a near-death experience. On the verge of death, I wonder how that affects your mind, your personality, your soul. I'm wondering how to role-play coming so close to death and surviving.

Well, I'm no expert, but I'd expect your character to be much more careful, and maybe not jump right into combat. Not exactly sure what an archivist is though, and if what I described would go against it's personality.

Basically, an archivist is the wizard of Divine magic. Spellbook and all. What I'm thinking about is it sort of becomes fasinated with death in all aspects.

Well, if you had actually died then got res'd, there's always the blood magus, they seem pretty trippy

Hmmmmm.... I think that in most settings a near death experiance for a mid-high level adventurer is no big deal.

If someone had died and come back to life, then that would be a bigger deal. Possibly there would be more curiosity with life and death now, although i always imagine Archivists to be pretty facinated by it anyway.

Perhaps the opposite to what was said, your character now he has come so close has a strange desire to find out what death is actually like, and so continually flirts with the idea of carrying on in combat just that little bit to long.

people who experience NDE usually come back and live life with a lot more zeal. dying or nearly dying puts a lot of things in perspective ("man, i nearly lost everything") the try to resolve petty old disputes with people they had problems with, they get there house in order, the look for a new goal in life.

and a lot of them kinda get a dreamy look to them, but that could be minor brain damage talking!

Archivists tend to follow a pretty dark path in terms of class progression, coming close to death, perhaps he wishes to live as best a life as he can in the here and now, then live an even greater one afterwards. This may mean cross-classing into Dread Necromancer in order to head towards Lichdom
