Hello,
I'm new to the character development boards, I stay mainly on the character optimization and dm boards. My DM is starting a new campaign with a no good character policy. I'm thinking of playing a gnome necromancer moving toward lichdome. He would start at lvl 4 with 2 lvls of wizard and 2 lvls of cleric going for the Mystic Theurge prc. My question is where can I find out information on becoming a lich? Also where can I find info on creating a flesh golem? I'm not looking soley for the technical aspect of these thing I'm looking for the flavor of the rituals in game. I was wondering also about being neutral and using necromancy. Can a character remain neutral and use undead to fight for a heroic cause or does the taint of this evil just overwhelm him so why bother with it?

Thanks

You can find info on both Lichs and Flesh Golems in the monster manual. It will tell you what you need to do to become a lich and how much and what materials to make a flesh golem.

Now it's debatable with necromancy. It probably can't be a good act since you are after all using the undead and necromancy has the evil descriptor. But cast the spell isn't really evil its self. Your just using negative energy to raise the undead. If you use the undead to save the world then you'd probably be neutral with good tendency's. But if you used the undead to sack a village it's evil. Thats my thoughts on it. Defently not good since you are raising undead.

After all Wee Jas is the goddess of death and necromancers work for her. But she is still lawful neutral not evil.

Just to correct The Yellow Dart Swinger, not all Necromancy has the evil descriptor (Fear, Speak with Dead, Astral Projection, etc.), even though most of them do. Necromancy as a whole is not inherently good or evil, and you are allowed to have good necromancers. Just, the good clerical necromancers won't be able to create undead ;)

So, you have cleric in your build, so the whole creating undead thing would go against it if you were good, but you're safe at neutral, and as TYDS mentioned, Wee Jas is lawful neutral, so you could do it neutrally in her name. However, you're looking into lichdom, and since archlich and baelnorns (the good lichs) are for humans and elves, respectively, you'll probably be stuck with the evil lichs. Evil lichs are, as the name implies, evil - no neutral. So you would be best off here as an evil character, and I'd suggest Lawful Evil, so that you don't try getting all Chaotic Stupid or PC-Killer Evil.

I don't know too much about caster levels and the like, but would the cleric and wizard levels stack to give you your total caster level, or do you have two independant caster levels for your different classes? The only reason I wonder this is that you can't make a phylactery until you have a caster level of 11 or higher, and it really sucks to have to wait even longer than that, especially when you have to take all 4 levels of lich (unless your DM is going to let you suddenly become a +4 LA lich, the class for it is here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20031212a))

And to get an all around info on becoming a lich and on making flesh golems, check the Monster Manual and that Lich Class. When it comes out, you should look into getting Libris Mortis for more undead info. And for some quick necro-golem creation, you might want to check out the d20 Diablo II, which has the spells and stats for the Diablo II golems.
