I have a Dwarven Warblade that I need to come up with a long term goal in the campaign I am in.

His father was a well known armorsmith but was killed in a battle (orcs and goblins attacked the Dwarven city). My character was just young when it happened. During the battle he witnessed a human fighter using a style that he never saw before. After the battle, he decided to train to fight at the monastery where the human was from. Since my character isn't very good at making armor (although he tries his best) he decided he could bring more honor and glory to his clan by fighting. At the monastery he met a human who was training there as well. They became good friends. The human friend set out shortly after finishing his training on a quest to recovery a relic from the monastery. I set out with him to earn the glory and honor that my clan deserves.

So that is where I am. We just recently thwarted a plot against a king of a smaller city and saved the princess from being kidnapped. My DM just contacted me and asked for a long term goal for my character so he could try to work it in the campaign. The kidnappers were from a different plane so I thought maybe my character could discover a new, rare metal that he would want to gather for his clan and in memory of his father. The DM didn't think it would be fitting to have a level 1 character traveling the planes.

Right now the motivation for my character is to bring honor and glory to his clan (when they first set out he heard of a competition that brought them to the city where they saved the princess. He thought by winning the competition he would get the glory for his people). I have no idea what his long term goals could be.

Thanks for the help!

In regard to his monestary training, I'd delve more into how he gained entrance to study combat there but I take it that the majority of your clan perished in the battle you mentioned at the onset of your post? Well, perhaps he feels their tactics and strategies are too 'old fashioned' or 'traditional' and if they ever hope to obtain their former glory they need to master a new form of combat, i.e. the Warblade's maneuvers and stances.

So, he could intend to master a new style of combat and in turn, impart these new martial learnings to his people. I wish I new more about your clan in terms of what they were once known for so I might be of more help.

My character's clan (Bronzebeard clan) was known for the items they crafted. Both armor and weapons made from the metals found deep within the mountains. My character's father was one of the best armorsmiths in the clan. My character helped his father but never had the skill that his father did. His attempts at making armor were pitiful, to say the least. This did not deter him from trying, though. He always tried to win his father's approval via crafting armor. When his father died he knew he could not live up to his name by making armor so he set out to make a name for himself the only way he knew how... fighting.

The monastery always helped the Dwarves sell their goods. The monastery was in the hills at the foot of the mountain where the Dwarven stronghold was located. The Dwarves mainly kept to themselves but trusted the people in the monastery enough to have them sell and distribute their armor. In return, they got a piece of the profit and a discount on weapons and armor for their students.

(I never put much thought into my character actually crafting any armor. I put a few points in to the Craft: Armor skill, but other than that I haven't done much with it.)

I think the idea of discovering a new metal for the clan to work with is a great idea. Your DM is correct, 1st level characters should not be plane hopping just yet. This does ot impede you from searching for rare veins for you clan to mine, or for new crafting techniques for them to use. Your character is no craftsman, but I am sure as the son of a armorer he knows a good hunk of raw material when he sees one. Maybe he could find a way to alloy Adamantine and Cold Iron. Metalurgy holds several possibilities. You can work up to plane hopping new metal searches, I mean it is a LONG term goal.

Good Luck

I like the idea of finding a new metal, but I don't know how to work it into the story so far. We just recently rescued the princess of a small city by killing the impostor king. My character was in that city because he was traveling with his friend and heard about a festival with a competition (fighting, archery, jousting, obstacle course, etc.). He figured that would be a great place to start to earn a name for himself and bring glory to his clan.

What I'm concerned about is how I can explain his sudden interest in metal and crafting when he never did show much skill in it. So far all he's good at is fighting. Any ideas?

He has always had interest just no capacity. This is shown by his failed attempts to craft armor. While fighting against the Plane Hoppers, and in the competition he is bound to see types of metals and arrangements of armor that he had never even imagined before. This could rekindle his interest, to atleast gather information about how they are made or what the metals are.

The prize for one of the challenges could be a small bar of adamantine *sp maybe enough for a dagger blade. There are any number of ways but much of the tying in is the responsibility of the DM.

The King could give you the equialent amount of "strange metal" captured from the fallen invaders. Which just may be enough to wet your guys apetite.

There are a million ways to pursue that mindset those are just off the top of my head.

To my understanding with a father well known for his armor smithing I imagine that he would be constantly reminded of the great loss to the clan that was his fathers death. Perhaps previously your character resented always being compared to his lost father. resentful of not having his father there to teach him he ignored the skill. Perhaps now he has matured a little, enough to see how petty that was and wants to amend his personal honor.

Another option you may want to look at is bringing glory and honor to your clan by increasing their influence with other kingdoms through removing threats like the imposter king.

Another idea is you could perhaps try return the best armour that your father made to the clan in memory of his valor. One that has been either sold, stolen or taken from his body by the goblins & orcs.

Just a few ideas

How about just avenging his dad? Maybe there's a specific orc commander or something to go after.

The default long term goal for any tome of battle character is to attain an appropriate sword from the "nine swords"

Think of the glory it would bring to your clan and would bring tome of battle npc's from the region to rally under your leadership and learn from you and marvel at this legendary weapon

Maybe your first mentor was somehow searching for it and wants your aid, hearing of the progress you've made

But maybe the problem is that some dragon/ruler/something has the same and using it as jewellery/evil weapon instead of for the great good it is capable of [by fighting evil]

I thought about that idea and was about to use it, but my character doesn't use swords. He uses a Dwarven Waraxe. If I could get my DM to switch one of the nine swords to an axe then I would do it. Of course then it wouldn't be a sword. On the other hand its not like my character can't use a sword. So maybe if he did hear about one of the swords it could be something to pursue.

Maybe he wants to find a blessed forge whose creation was overseen by an aspect of moradin himself ages past

Maybe the dwarf's father was saving up money to find it somehow. He always dreamed of creating atleast one armour in that forge before he died and dedicating it to moradin

He always told you stories about it he had heard - while working at the forge with you
But you always thought they were mere stories and nothing more
But now .......

Me again...

Let's take all of this and put it together. His long term goal should be:

To find an appropriate metal and forge so that he may, (despite his former lack of prowess and interest) forge a Dwarven Waraxe comparable to these Legendary Swords in his father's honor; and in so doing return his people to their former glory and take his place within the mysteries of the Nine.

Now if that is not a worthy long term goal there isn't one.

Ok, I think I have my goal decided upon. After finding my father's armor, I will realize that I can never make armor of that quality. Through my training in the sublime way, I heard stories of the Nine Swords. Because of my fighting background and training, I am more familiar with how weapons are made. My character will decide to quest for the materials (and rituals) needed to craft a Nine Swords equivalent Dwarven Waraxe.

What I need now is some abilities to work towards to add to the weapon to make it worth of being compared to one of the Nine Swords. Unfortunately I do not have my book in front of me right now so I can't look at each one to get some ideas.

What enhancements would "fit" a weapon used by a Dwarven Warblade?

Try something which adds to dwarven racial traits
Example:another +2 saves vs poison/spells
+4 constitution
Double the bonus of stability etc

Just get yourself to the point where you can craft a magical Dwarven Waraxe. Legacy weapons do not gain a legacy in the forge, but through their use. All of the nine swords were just swords until they were used for countless years for good or ill. You are starting a legacy, not ending one. Learn how to craft a worthy axe and go forth and carve out it's legacy with what you are good at. (fighting). After years of use you will know things like what first level manuever it should grant a user of 5th level or improve.

Off the top of my head.

My vote would be Stone Bones 5th level allows you to do it 5 imes a day if you don't know it or increases the DR to 10/Adamantine if you already know the manuever.

Honed Upon The Mountain at 6th the weapon counts as keen.

Counter Weight at 7th gain a +5 unnamed bonus to balance when wielding it.

Patient Counter at 10th level 3/day you may choose an opponent, melee attacks from that opponent against you this round provoke immediate attacks of oppurtunity.

Anything beyond that requires fulfilling the legacy requirements and gets more into the personal history of the blade, which has not yet been forged.

This kind of stuff should be enough to get you going or atleast in a meaningful conversation with your DM.

Good Luck
