The Mechanatrix, basically, are descendants of couplings between human and Modron. (How this happened I don't know, don't need to know, don't want to know.) My basic concept is this: Takeda was born of a human female who ended up carrying the seed of a Rogue Modron after an incident in a field of Wild Magic. The offspring she produced was something not quite human and not quite machine--but in mindset, Takeda proved to take much from his ultra-logical Modron heritage. His mother was a Samurai warrior, who was disgraced by the unexpected pregnancy (but neither released from her Daimyo's service or ordered to abort the child, mercifully.) Takeda grew up almost completely alone due to his differences, so instead of the traditional courtly instruction of a young nobleman he received an education in hunting, tracking and survival. His teacher was a court falconer who took pity on the lonely boy. Of course when he came of age, Takeda was taught the sublime art of the sword by his mother. As a fatherless child, he was not bound to serve in the Daimyo's retinue and so chose to make his own way in the world, and discover what he could about his mysterious extraplanar heritage. Using his training as a huntsman, he became a wandering bounty hunter---to his ultra-orderly mind, few professions could be more noble than bringing wanton criminals to justice. Eventually, after gaining a minor reputation in his home province, Takeda was approached by an old Sorcerer who knew something of the Planes. The young man had his heritage explained to him at last---and with the Sorcerer's help, he journied to the Plane of Mechanus to meet his inhuman forebears, feeling sure he would have much greater kinship with them than the humans he had known. Unfortunately, he was regarded by the beings of the Clockwork Realm as a Rogue Modron, and rejected. Takeda took it surprisingly well---he simply accepted his status as outcast, but determined to help his estranged "kin" bring ultimate law to the multiverse by tracking down and bringing to justice law breakers and pervaders of chaos wherever they were found. Personality-wise, Takeda takes strongly after his Modron ancestors. He is virtually without emotion, guided only by logic and his own reasoning. He does not experience fear, anger, or any of the vast gamut of emotions that impede and spur so many of his fellow adveturers. Instead, Takeda is what he is simply because he assessed his skill-set and determined a bounty hunter was his most suited vocation. He values order and law to a degree most people would call insane, but it is a law that Modrons recognize and therefore so esoteric to human principals that he is in effect tolerant of virtually any lifestyle. This lack of emotions makes Takeda very good at bouncing back from dissapointments such as his being cast out from the Modron society. He has absolutely no fear of death, but he would not engage in battle unless given at least a fair chance of victory. So this is everything I've thought up for my latest character. Does it read decent? I'm still not totally decided on whether I should have him be a Samurai (I kind of like the Stare Down ability), or go Ranger and simply arm him with a katana (probably truer to my vision of the character, despite his actually being a Samurai.) In anycase, I'm shooting for the Justiciar PrC from Complete Warrior, though that's neither here nor there.... |
